A girl who has a relative living in Alice called 3AW this afternoon and said When this happens her only option would be to use Qantas and she is forced to go MEL-CNS-ASP I thought that was a bit odd, maybe Sydney or Adelaide, but not Cairns.

TIGERAIR will stop its Alice Springs services from July 22.
The budget airline shocked the tourism sector when late today it announced services between Alice and Sydney and Melbourne would stop because of dwindling demand.

The blow comes a year after the airline returned to Central Australia.

Tigerair assured all passengers booked to travel to or from Alice Springs after July 22 will receive an automatic refund to the original form of payment.

Tigerair Australia CEO Rob Sharp said the company was committed to being the consumer

champion but could only do so by responding to and meeting consumer demand.

“We have been flying to Alice Springs and to Sunshine Coast for just over a year now and

we have worked closely with our tourism and airport partners to promote these services,” Mr Sharp said.

“The commercial reality is we are a volume business and to build a sustainable business in

the Australian domestic market we need to see a sustainable level of demand for our

services.

“Today’s announcements are the result of a thorough network review. We constantly assess

the market to ensure our network evolves based on demand.

“We remain focused on building a sustainable platform for growth, which includes measured

growth in line with consumer demand.”

Tourism Minister Matt Conlan said the news was disappointing

“It has come as a surprise, I heard about it this afternoon, it is an absolute blow to us,” he said.

“Alice Springs has been very supportive of Tiger and the other way (around) - it’s also worth pointing out that Alice Springs did want this product.

“NT Airports, they have also worked very hard to bring Tiger back to the Territory.

“The airline just couldn’t make it work.”

This is old news, however there ARE DIRECT services by QF from MEL, and there are connecting services via both ADL AND SYD so I think this girl is telling porkies.
