At the time of this writing, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, transporting 227 passengers and 12 crew members from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, has been missing for months. An unprecedented international search was unable to locate any bodies or debris. Authorities remain baffled, and the world remains transfixed. However, this is not the first story of its kind to shake the global community. According to the Aviation Society Network, more than 80 aircrafts have been declared "missing" since 1948--"Ghost Planes" that have literally vanished without a trace. This special utilizes interviews with experts and the families of passengers,

This is similar to "Flying Wild Alaska" that aired a couple of years ago.

Having lived in PNG many years ago (early 1970's), I can vouch for it being a rather 'interesting' place for flying - and that's just as a passenger. The island of New Guinea is very mountainous - up to about 14000 feet - and it usually clouds in by the middle of the day, hence most of these flights are in the mornings.

With the exception of the "Highlands Highway" from Lae to Mount Hagen, roads (even the 4WD variety) don't go very far inland from the coast. Hence there are little airstrips wherever space can be found, along ridges, uphill etc - not for the fainthearted. Most of those villages depend on those flights for everything - air being the only way in apart from a long Kokoda Trail like hike. For most of the passengers, it's all they know.

VFR is the norm and those who get bold and decide to fly through cloud run the risk of meeting something solid within it. A very good place for a pilot to gain experience - or die if he/she makes a mistake.

There was an old saying in PNG - There are Old Pilots and Bold Pilots, but no Old Bold Pilots.

Nova aired yesterday "Why Planes Vanish"

The disappearance of Flight MH370 stunned the world. In an era of smart-phones and GPS, how could a 270-ton passenger jet vanish into thin air? It was a rude awakening for all of us, showing just how far we are from the world we imagined we lived in—in which every move is monitored all the time. NOVA tells the inside story of the search for Flight MH370 and meets the key players from all corners of the globe who have spent months searching for the lost plane. In the search for answers, we'll reveal how today's planes must fly through vast radar "blind spots," and investigate new technologies that could allow ground stations and satellites to track planes automatically, without pilot intervention, even in remote areas with no radar coverage. What will it take to guarantee that in the future, nothing will ever be 'lost' again?

Fly In / Fly Out miners are the subject of a new observational series, Flying Miners, coming to ABC next week.

The series, produced by Screentime, seeks to put a ‘human face’ to those commuting long distance in Australia’s mining industry for high salaries, and the challenges involved.

Commuting by plane, to work in one of Australia’s remote mines, can be a double-edged sword…the money is good, but the costs are great. Isolation, loneliness, and heartache – these are the realities of working out in the wilderness, thousands of kilometres from home. But over 100,000 people choose to work this way. They’re called FIFOs: Fly In Fly Out miners and they hold a unique place in Australia’s mining industry.

Making money – and lots of it, can make ordinary people do extraordinary things. If the price is right, it can turn teachers into truck drivers, accountants into labourers and high school dropouts into highly skilled drillers. We meet FIFOs to understand the business from their perspective, why they do what they do and how they see their future unfolding. Shana used to be a model – she now drives a dump truck in the Pilbara, while Michael used to be a power line worker in New South Wales. He now travels across the country to Port Hedland, to maintain rail ore cars.

Earning lots of money can also become a hard habit to break. Flying Miners explores the indulgences and dangers of FIFOs with too much cash. Copper miner Nick Dametto has tried to work outside the mining industry but the money keeps luring him back.

But it’s a fickle business and Australia has been riding the wave of the mining boom for years now, with the bust potentially always just around the corner. With input from leading industry experts and with unprecedented access to mines all over the country, this series lifts the lid on the world of those Flying Miners.

8:30pm Tuesday ABC.

On Wed 21 Jan SBS will start a new series called WWII Air Crash Detectives

Bakers Creek, Australia, 14th June, 1943.
For the men about to board "Miss Every Morning Fixin", the pressures of the War had been eased by a period of rest and relaxation in Queensland, but they were about to return to war operations in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
They were never to return.
Shortly after take-off the aircraft plunged into the ground killing everyone aboard - apart from one survivor, who would spend the rest of his life coping with the injuries he received that day.
This accident is still Australia’s worse ever plane crash and yet it was hushed up by the Australian and US governments until after the war had ended, with the relatives being told that those on board had perished in a crash over the South Pacific.

WWII Air Crash Detectives

Full Episode List

From 1939 to 1945 thousands of young airmen met terrible ends not at the hands the enemy’s machine guns or because of the murderous flak of anti-aircraft fire, but in catastrophic accidents and training crashes. Incredibly, these incidents accounted for the lives of over 8,000 men. All over the world training flights and cargo transport journeys all sometimes ended in disaster.

Perhaps it’s not so surprising that, amid the weight of the human costs of the air war against Germany, these ‘hidden’ losses have been forgotten; but all the men in the aircraft which never returned signed up for the same war, and they were all someone’s father, brother or son. The same letters went home to every family.

Luckily, there are some who believe those brave men should not be a footnote in military history. They are the World War 2 air crash detectives and now, for the first time, they have agreed to let us join them.

Episode One - Lost & Confused: Sharp Top Mountain B-25 Crash
On a cold dark night in February, 1943, five trainees aboard a B-25 Mitchell Bomber struggle to find their bearings. Confused at their exact whereabouts the aircraft finally slams into Sharp Top Mountain high above the American town of Bedford in Virginia. It was the third training crash in the area that night – and the worse. What really caused this accident? Was it because of “Pilot Error”, equipment failure, bad weather, or could the mission have been doomed from the beginning? The official report stated the cause of the crash as ‘Unknown’, but in this episode we discover what really happened.

Episode Two - Sikorski’s Last Flight
4 July 1943 – 11:07pm a Liberator bomber from RAF Transport Command takes off from Gibraltar for England. On board is General Władysław Sikorski, Prime Minister of Poland’s London-based government in exile and Commander-in-Chief of its armed forces, returning from visiting Polish troops in the Middle East. On take-off, the aircraft climbs normally from the runway, levels off to gather speed but then suddenly loses height and crashes into the harbour. The 62-year-old Polish general is killed, along with 15 others. The sole survivor is the Czech-born pilot, Eduard Prchal, who is rescued by an RAF launch. The bodies of five passengers and crew, including Sikorski’s daughter, are never found. This episode pieces together the events of that night, the cause of the crash and examines the murky world of WWII international espionage and the case for an assassination.

Episode Three - Baker’s Creek: Australia’ S Worst Crash
Bakers Creek, Australia, 14th June, 1943. For the men about to board “Miss Every Morning Fixin”, the pressures of the War had been eased by a period of rest and relaxation in Queensland, but they were about to return to war operations in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. They were never to return. The “Miss Every Morning Fixin”, a name derived from the amount of effort needed to keep it airworthy, was a beaten up old B-17 bomber that had been converted for transport use and had suffered a great deal of damage - including receiving over a thousand bullet holes - in a raid over the Philippines in 1941. Shortly after take-off the aircraft plunged into the ground killing everyone aboard - apart from one survivor, who would spend the rest of his life coping with the injuries he received that day. The death toll finally stood at 40 passengers and crew. This accident is still Australia’s worse ever plane crash and yet it was hushed up by the Australian and US governments until after the war had ended, with the relatives being told that those on board had perished in a crash over the South Pacific. Why was the truth suppressed, and why did the plane crash?

Episode Four - The Turweston Crash: Death In The Moonlight
In the early hours of 8th July 1944, a normally quiet part of rural Northamptonshire was a hive of activity as the 17 twinned engine Wellington bombers rumbled down the runway of their Turweston airfield home. With the Allied D-Day invasion having taken place the previous month, these young trainees were conducting a night-time flying exercise as part of their readiness to enter frontline bombing service for the RAF.
With a bright full moon lighting up his fellow circling bombers in the night’s sky, the Wellington of Pilot Officer Searles and his six strong crew took to the air. As they climbed into the inky darkness a fireball erupted. Searle’s Wellington had collided with another, and the two bombers crashed to the ground in flames. Both crews were killed instantly. 13 young men had died before their war had even begun… Garth Barnard strives to find out what caused the mid-air collision by reviewing eye-witness accounts, official reports, computer simulations and his own theories.

Episode Five - Conspiracy Or Confusion? Naper 28: Death On The Great Plains
August 3rd, 1944 – a C-47 transport plane, with a crew of four, is ferrying 24 trainee P-47 fighter pilots from the Bruning Army Air Field in Nebraska to the South Dakotan Pierre Army Air Field for advanced training. The pilot, Captain Stanley J Meadows, is forced to try and find a way through a wide storm front as the unique weather conditions found on the great plains of America conspire against him. After cloud dodging for almost an hour, Captain Meadow’s luck finally runs out and the plane is engulfed in a violent storm cloud, there is a lightning flash, and witnesses see the aircraft plummet to the ground killing all 28 passengers and crew onboard. Naper 28 as it became known is thought to be the worse single US plane crash of the War. The exact cause of the crash was never fully determined and several possibilities existed as to why the C-47 crashed.

Episode Six - The Duke Of Kent Crash
It is the 25th of August, 1942. A Short Sunderland Flying Boat slams into Eagle Rock, a remote hillside in the far north of Scotland, killing fourteen people on board. Miraculously, there is one survivor. But among the dead is His Royal Highness Prince George the Duke of Kent, the brother of King George VI. The official report into the crash cites pilot error as its cause – it was, according to the authorities, a tragic accident. This episode is tasked with getting at the truth behind the infamous Eagle Rock crash which claimed the life of the ‘Forgotten’ Prince – the Royal brother with the unfortunate lifestyle and inconvenient politics.

Terror in the skies: AirAsia and beyond

The ITN Productions-made Terror in the Skies: AirAsia and Beyond details the events of December 28, 2014, when AirAsia flight 8501 and its 155 passengers and seven crew members were lost in a storm 40 minutes into their journey from Indonesia to Singapore. The special reveals “troubling connections” between the accident and 2009′s Air France disaster, and also explores technology designed to prevent such incidents from recurring. The doc will also feature computer-generated animation aimed at breaking down radar data from the final moments of the flight, while meteorologists will use weather data from the day of the accident to look at the effects of the storm on the Airbus A320. Also included in the doc are exclusive interviews with global experts, including legal representative for the victims’ families.

Title Choosing Sides

Series Number 14

A loud vibration and the smell of smoke warn the pilots of British Midland Flight 92 that they have an engine fire on board. The crew shuts down the engine and tries to land at a nearby airport, but their second engine fails before they can get safely on the ground. Just meters from the runway, the 737-400 slams into an embankment beside Britain's busy M1 motorway. It seems like a rare case of dual engine failure, but investigators soon learn that a tragic misunderstanding may be the real cause

That would never work, people use VPN services for both personal and for work purposes. Unless you start inspecting packet content there is no way to determine if it's a UDP or TCP VPN service on a non standard port.

In fact, I'm using one now to bypass the library's silly restrictions on Internet ;)

New Series for Ch4 UK
Flying to the Ends of the Earth

Some of the planet’s most extraordinary and spectacular experiences are only accessible by air. In Flying to the Ends of the Earth, a new 3-part series from Blast! Films for Channel 4, Arthur Williams (C4 Paralympics, D-Day: As it Happens, The Plane that Saved Britain) flies to some of the world’s smallest and most dangerous landing strips to find out why people want to live at the ends of the earth, and discover how tiny planes are opening up the planet’s most remote and most beautiful wildernesses. The series will encounter everything from grizzly bears and gold prospectors in Northern Canada, to the deadly race to harvest Himalayan Viagra in the remotest reaches of Nepal, to flying missionaries spreading the Word deep in the Papuan jungle.
Seven years ago, Royal Marine commando Arthur was paralysed in a car crash. An inveterate adrenaline junkie, he needed another outlet for his spirit of adventure and so taught himself to fly. Over the course of the last year, he’s experienced some of the most challenging flying in the world: navigating perilous mountain air currents in Nepal, boat planes in Canada, helicopter cattle herding in the Australian outback, and runways clinging to the side of sheer cliffs in Papua.
The result is a series full of jaw-dropping aerial footage of some of the Earth’s least-explored and most stunning landscapes. The series will also feature the people whose lives have been changed irreversibly by the coming of the plane, or who rely on aeroplanes for their entire existence. Arthur meets the family living on a Pacific island paradise 600km from the nearest city, the residents of the utopian experiment set up in the 1960s by First Nation Tlichco people who wanted to withdraw from integration with Canadian society, and sees how ‘Everest’s airport’ has brought Starbucks and ‘Yakdonalds’ to a once-remote Nepalese village.

Gone to the Dogs

Dogs Might Fly

t’s a show about training dogs to be pilots. Three canine behaviour experts spend episode one visiting rescue centres, in search of 12 finalists who progress to an intensive, nine-week residential skills academy. Can the dogs walk up a slope, follow a pointed finger and find a sausage in a kennel? If they can, it’s likely they’ll be able to fly a light aircraft. Hosting this jolly excuse for a lot of pooch cuteness – and, oddly, some clanging product placement for cars – is a faintly ashamed Jamie Theakston.

Deadly Mission

On 18 September 1961, a Douglas DC-6 operated by Transair Sweden, carrying Dag Hammarskjöld, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations, crashes en route to cease-fire negotiations in Zambia during the Congo Crisis. All of the 16 passengers and crew members die in the incident.

Edge of Disaster

On 10 October 2006, Atlantic Airways Flight 670 lands at Stord Airport, but the aircraft overruns the runway and crashes after careering off a steep embankment. 4 of the 16 people on board were killed in the incident. The causes of the crash were a malfunction of the aircraft's spoilers and hydroplaning.

Deadly Delay

On 20 August 2008, Spanair Flight 5022 attempts to takeoff from Barajas Airport, but stalls immediately, banks to the right, and crashes, killing 154 people out of the 172 on board. The pilots aborted the first takeoff attempt, and the second one resulted in the crash.

Carnage in Sao Paulo

On 31 October 1996, TAM Transportes Aéreos Regionais Flight 402 crashes seconds after takeoff from São Paulo–Congonhas Airport into a heavily populated residential area, killing all 96 people on board and three on the ground. The crash was attributed to the uncommanded deployment of a faulty thrust reverser on the right engine.

It was interesting as it was a crash that the NTSB were tracking before the aircraft actually crashed, scrambling F-16's to do a visual on the aircraft and attempting to calculate where the fuel would run out. Luckily it wasn't over a populated area.

Why the 'Miracle on the Hudson' in the new movie Sully was no crash landing

On January 15, 2009, Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger landed an Airbus A320-214 in New York's freezing Hudson River following a bird strike-induced loss of both engines. All 155 passengers and crew on board US Airways Flight 1549 survived.

The incident has been dubbed the "Miracle on the Hudson" and the story behind it is told in the movie Sully, out today.

Actor Tom Hanks plays Captain "Sully" Sullenberger, an experienced pilot thrust into the limelight after gliding his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the river shortly after takeoff.

This was not a crash, more a safe landing. In safety science, the incident represents what is known as a "near miss".

Who Flew First?

On Monday ABC screens Who Flew First? a docu-drama that will challenge the notion that the Wright Brothers were the first to fly in December 1903.

This is produced by Artemis International (Who Do You Think You Are?).
Who Flew First is a docu-drama about the controversy over the world’s first motorized flight. Every school child is taught that the brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright flew first in December 1903. But the Australian aviation expert John Brown claims that the German born immigrant to the US, Gustave Whitehead, flew two years before the Wright Brothers, in August 1901 in Bridgeport Connecticut and he has evidence to back his case. Opposing Brown are historians supporting the official view that the Wright Brothers flew first. They claim that the 17 eye-witness accounts from the 1930s attesting to Whitehead’s flights are unreliable. But a discovery is made that in return for the right to display the 1903 Flyer in their museum, the Smithsonian

Institution agreed that it will never claim that anyone flew before the Wright bothers. History may not be as certain as we thought.

9.20pm Monday December 5th on ABC.

On 24 March 2015, Germanwings Flight 9525 enters a high-speed descent and crashes into the French Alps during a flight from Barcelona, Spain, to Düsseldorf, Germany. s16e09 - Deadly Solution

On 28 December 2014, Indonesia AirAsia Flight 8501 stalls and crashes into the Java Sea while flying through a thunderstorm, killing all 155 passengers and 7 crew members on board. The causes of the crash were a malfunction of the rudder travel limiter unit and an inappropriate response by the pilots.

s16e10 - Afghan Nightmare

On 29 April 2013, just seconds after taking off from Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan, National Airlines Flight 102 stalls and crashes into the ground, killing all seven crew members on board. Tomorrow night (Anzac Day Night) the ABC is repeating "The Real Great Escape" 21:33 to 22:03.

It’s one of cinema’s memorable moments: American Steve McQueen powering a motorcycle through paddocks and hurtling over fences after breaking out of a German POW camp.

Among the 76 Allied airmen who escaped via the ingeniously built tunnels under Stalag Luft III, there was not one American. There were, however, six Australians.

Keep an eye out for Skippy s1e32 Ten Little Visitors.

Early in the episode the chopper flies into YSSY (late 60's). In the background are a number of QF B707's, BOAC B707, DC-3 as well as a RAAF Herc taxying behind the chopper.

Do Planes Need Pilots?

When news hit on March 24th, 2015 that a Germanwings Airbus A320 had crashed in the French Alps, no one could have guessed the cause.

The co-pilot, 28-yr-old Andreas Lubitz, had deliberately flown the plane into the side of a mountain to kill himself and the other 149 people on board.

It was a terrifying act that triggered questions about the safety of air travel and the reliability of pilot testing.

Plane Crash

Scientists, pilots and aviation experts participate in a staged plane crash in a remote area of Mexican desert, hoping the exercise will reveal more about what happens to aircraft and their occupants during forced emergency landings.

Pilot James Slocum will put a Boeing 727 passenger jet on a crash course, parachuting out minutes before impact.

After the crash, experts will analyse the site, along with data collected from cameras, instruments and hi-tech crash test dummies, to learn more about what happens when aeroplanes are forced out of the sky.

This is a hoot. Great passion for Airliners. They have a two tier viewing option, Freeview or Elite. They do live crossovers from various Airports. It usually goes for 20 minute or so free and then only "Elite" viewers watch from then on. Plus there is various other content such as interviews, etc. I watched them live on YouTube on the weekend from Gatwick. Next it's Schiphol.

The Greatest Air Race

Produced by All of Us Productions this tells a long-lost story of when, in 1919, four Australians flew from London to Darwin in a Vickers Vimy plane made of fabric, wire and wood.

“I was astonished to find a treasure trove of vision in the National Film and Sound Archives, as well as brilliant photos of the race competitors in libraries around the country,” says Director / Producer Susan Harrington.

“It turns out the competitors themselves were given cameras by Kodak to record the race. Personal photography was still in its infancy in 1919, so Kodak capitalised on media interest in the race, and as a result, some parts of the world were photographed from the air for the very first time.”

“I think for many Australians, the exploits of Ross and Keith Smith are largely unknown,” says Thomas. “Yet it was as significant in its day as the moon landing just 50 years later. What a staggering development, to go from a fabric-covered biplane to the moon landing in less than a human lifespan.”

Before one giant leap, there was one great race. In 1919, four Australians flew from London to Darwin in a Vickers Vimy plane made of fabric, wire and wood. Sitting in open cockpits with only a compass for navigation, their extraordinary 18,000km journey took 28 days. To celebrate this pioneering feat of endurance, and the centenary of the Darwin landing on 10 December, SBS will air the new Australian documentary The Greatest Air Race in early December.

The Greatest Air Race follows former NASA astronaut Andy Thomas as he returns to the old Vimy to rediscover this all-but-forgotten achievement. As a small boy growing up in South Australia, Andy was inspired by the surviving plane and the story of its remarkable pilot, Sir Ross Smith, to study aeronautical engineering. After joining NASA, Andy flew four million miles aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour, and took with him the cloth ‘wings’ of Sir Ross and his brother and co-pilot Sir Keith Smith.

4 Corners next Monday has an COVID Aviation Special

Grounded

Just as Qantas announces major job losses, Four Corners‘ Michael Brissenden reports on Grounded, Australia’s aviation crisis and the future of flying.

“It is the biggest crisis the airline industry’s ever seen.” Airline CEO

All around the globe, airports that were once thriving busy places are lying virtually dormant. The previously crowded terminals are silent, the planes are parked in neat rows and no-one knows if air travel will ever be the same.

“We’ve had flights with more dogs on them than passengers in the last couple of weeks.” Airport Manager

Aviation is arguably the highest profile casualty of the coronavirus pandemic and the impact has been enormous.

“Aviation is the lifeblood of the economy. It’s the arteries of the economy that facilitates the carrying on of business and the transport of people for work and for leisure, and of all of our goods. It’s an extraordinary thing to now have that shut down.” Airport Manager

The aviation crisis has driven Australia’s second major carrier, Virgin, to the point of collapse. On Monday, the key players explain how things went so wrong so quickly.

“You have a big capital-intensive industry with a lot of people, and you have no revenue. Our revenue went down to a very, very low number very, very quickly.” Former airline Chair

The program details the battle to keep the airline going, examining why it was vulnerable in the first place and what was driving the refusal of the federal government to step in and directly support Virgin.

“We were all tired. We’d all been working around the clock, seven days a week, 15 to 18-hour days, trying to avoid going into voluntary administration…I knew at that point that we were on our own.” Airline CEO

Airlines all over the world are struggling to work out how to put passengers back in the skies safely, and affordably.

“Social distancing on an aircraft is not practical anyway…you’d have 22 people on 180 seat aircraft. And that would make the economics non-viable or the airfares would have to be nine times what they are today.” Airline CEO

The crisis for the aviation industry is so profound that it’s forcing airlines to confront the question – what is the future of flying and will they still have a viable business?

“I actually think our biggest competitor is going to be Zoom and Teams and WebEx and Skype…people in business have discovered that you can actually hold a pretty good business meeting digitally over the screen on your computer or your laptop.” Airline CEO

Australia Come Fly with Me

SBS aviation series Australia Come Fly with Me, presented by Justine Clarke will screen for three weeks in October.

Produced by WildBear Entertainment, this spans our history in the skies and surrounding social issues.

Justine Clarke said: “Australia Come Fly With Me has been an eye-opening, exhilarating series to be part of. I loved learning about the daredevils and dreamers who made flying possible – pilots who risked their lives, women who refused to accept the status quo and migrants who were making this country home. I hope this series informs and inspires Australians in equal measure.”

SBS Director of Television and Online Content, Marshall Heald, said: “Australia Come Fly With Me is a landmark television moment, celebrating the centenary of civil aviation. Social justice issues like gender equality, Indigenous representation, LGBTIQ+ rights and migration have all played out across history in the skies. Flying connected us with each other and the world and this series will remind Australians how it has shaped our nation.”

Coincidentally, Clarke is also an actor in RFDS which has been filming for Seven in Broken Hill.

The history of flight is filled with danger and glamour, social injustice and opportunity. Just as it brought people together, air travel also revealed the cracks in our society. Over three weeks, Australia Come Fly With Me will celebrate the turbulent history of Australians in the air. 2020 marks 100 years of civil aviation in this country at a time when the industry is facing its biggest challenge.

Hosted by much loved actor Justine Clarke, the three-part series is a collision of pop culture, the history of flight and the great shifts in Australian life that flying enabled. The opportunities and tensions created by air travel are the context for struggles between sexes, sexualities and cultures that reflect and foreshadow changes that would follow on the ground.

Justine explores the struggles of women, Indigenous Australians, gay men and migrants to find a place in the skies. These stories are told by flight attendants and pilots and are brought to life by a rich archive of aircraft, people and exotic destinations. Australia Come Fly with Me invites us to take a trip into the past from a fresh perspective.

Australia Come Fly with Me is a heart-warming look at one of Australia’s most diverse, ambitious and important industries. It asks the question: What will be COVID-19’s lasting effect on our love affair with flight? In a time of relative isolation, this series shines a light on the desire within us all to connect.

Australia Come Fly With Me will be subtitled in Simplified Chinese and Arabic, and added to the subtitled collection on SBS On Demand, available immediately after its premiere. It will also be available with audio description on the live television broadcast.

Australia Come Fly With Me is a WildBear Entertainment production for SBS. Principal production investment from Screen Australia in association with SBS. Financed with support from Create NSW.

8:30pm Wednesday 14 October on SBS.
