2 Russian registered Robinson R66 helo's (RA-06360 and RA-06345) are in town at present, arriving from Lord Howe Island after this afternoon's storm cells passed through. They originated in Moscow and had flown all the way to New Zealand.

Their journey can be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/#!/ThereAndBackAgainFlight

The Russian's just departed to the north. Apparently they'll be going as far south as Flinders Island in the coming days. Both helo's are fitted with auxillary tanks and hold nearly 600 litres of Jet A1.

And here's other webpages outlining their journey. http://thereandbackagain.ru/en/profile or if you read Russian (don't we all?) www.vertolet.ru

A formation of four FA-18 Hornets just tracked coastal southbound along the Northern beaches, did an orbit off Narrabeen, then continued south. A single aircraft then tracked coastal northbound at around 500ft.

A great sight, and thundering sound effects.

They were for Gough Whitlam's memorial service. I understand they were going to fly a 'Missing Man' formation over the city.

Mark C

I think that would have been the missing man formation for Gough Whitlam's memorial service.

Sydney Storm Front

Looks like VH-YQS QF1508 HBA-SYD has diverted back to Canberra after reaching coastal off Cronulla.

VH-TGG, QF533, QF863 and QF925 all holding to the north. Joined by QL585 around 1615.

VH-EBJ operating JQ4 from Honolulu has tracked down to Nowra and entered an orbit.

VH-EBO QF642, VH-YIM VA853 and VH-VXK QF442 are all orbiting north of Canberra.

Looks like QF925 might have given up, seems to be heading south to either CBR or MEL?

Correction: have things cleared up? JQ4 descending and heading up towards SYD, as are some of the others? QF925 may be doing the same thing?

The front has almost passed through Sydney Airport, after 20-30 minutes of holds and diversions.

From the ATIS
PROB30 TEMPO 0502/0513 VRB20G40KT 3000 THUNDERSTORMS WITH MODERATE RAIN SCT015 SCT035CB
VIS: REDUCED TO 5000M IN RA
WX: CB TO THE WEST AND SOUTH WEST

The aircraft holding to the north are now being directed out to sea over the Myall Lakes, still at FL430 (VH-TGG) and FL370 (VH-XZF). They are heading towards UP34 which is holding at 80nm east of YSSY.

From flightaware:

* QF925 (VH-VZT) diverted to CBR
* QF442, QF533, QF642, QF863 JQ4, VA853 made it to SYD

QF1508 also diverted to Canberra

Rowan McKeever
5th November 2014, 08:05 PM
Indeed, and -YQS will be paying for it until around 11.30pm! Long day for you guys, Zac

Zac M
5th November 2014, 08:23 PM
Yeah, it actually had a lightning strike so YQU took up 1508 and YQS went to 1550, in saying that because of the Sydney delays they ended up leaving at the same time!

Thanks Craig. It surprised me as I was driving along Canal Road just after 16.30 this afternoon. I though it was an IL76 buthis confirms it.

Cheers

The Gabon aircraft arrived late, parked at Dom-6. It's an ex-BA machine.

An IL-76 is parked near General Holmes Drive at Bay 74.

Looks like VH-QOT (QLK220D) had some technical issues, didn't depart (WGA/SYD) until 11:30am (five hours late). While VH-QOX (QLK222D) was 25 minutes late, departing at 10am. Not a lot of room for two Q400s at Wagga.

Interesting and rare visitor at Wagga today, A36-002 737-7DF BBJ arrived this morning and departed this afternoon. No photos since I didn't realise it was here until it departed. Albury also had a missed approach by A39-004 A330-203MRTT.

VH-FVR, the VA ATR damaged at Albury some time ago, has ferried Albury to Singapore (Seletar) yesterday and today, via Alice Springs and Port Hedland.

Good pick up! Didn't notice this in my logs. Though the damage is suspected to have happened on a Canberra flight but wasn't picked up until the suspected bird strike at Albury later the same day (still under ATSB investigation).

VH-SQY and VH-RUE (though no flight plan was made) finally made it to Wagga after storms on Monday caused both aircraft to delay and later cancel their flight plans. Also picked up a glider (http://www.flightradar24.com/data/airplanes/ph-1467#4e8489e) with ADSB heading north and back south this afternoon.

Nigel C
27th November 2014, 08:54 PM
I had a quick look to see if the glider had been placed on the Australian registry, but its serial number wasn't there. Its Schleicher model and serial number suggests it's a 2011 motorised glider, so it may have just been imported and is yet to receive a local registration.

Interestingly, Australia is home to the Schleicher glider with serial number 01 (Model KA-1). It's a 1952 edition, VH-GEI.

Looks like VH-SQY will be living at Wagga, currently parked in the general aviation area down near the Aero Club (which has been relocated down to a road off Elizabeth Ave).

Also picked up two more gliders, one with ADSB and the other is just MODE S. The other glider was also back in the air today, seems that two at least are based in Corowa.

Looks like there's a pre-world junior gliding championship being held at Narromine early next month, so this would explain the internationals regos. http://glidingaustralia.org/GFA/joeyglide-pre-worlds.html

Sorry to bump this old topic back-up but found the website of the gliders that I've been picking up!
