I believe the plane was VH-TMF, looking at the logs on my ADS-B receiver.

You can also see it on FlightRadar24, if you view 2015-07-19 between 06:30 and 07:00 UTC, I think it was. It turns around for approach and then just before reaching the runway, it becomes a question mark before disappearing altogether.

Have to agree, looking at the ABC photo it does appear to be a Thorps tail, sad, the aircraft was just over thirty years old. Always had something of a soft spot for T18s, having had the pleasure of meeting Clive Canning in my youth after he flew VH-CMC around the world.

The aircraft in question was VH-HRG , a Glasair , and not the above mentioned , info from the ATSB website ..
