An afternoon storm hit Sydney Airport today and made things interesting on approach. Qantas 438 from Melbourne (VH-VXF) was on final approach to Runway 34R, when several bolts of lightening strike in the surrounding areas. On short final they declare "Going Around Can't See The PAPI" and make a right turn onto heading 090. The last bolt of lightening as they go around is a beauty.

Hi Grahame,

Thanks for sharing. I had looked at Flightradar24 to find that the Qantas B747-400 was returning to Sydney after long flight from South Africa was flying round and round in couple of times just above north of Goulburn before YSSY re-opened to traffic after the thunderstorms passed over Sydney. It was not only one aircraft but there were couple of aircrafts were effected in southern NSW and few in Pacific Ocean from New Zealand.

From Cliff Cook.

Hi Barry, Hope you are well.

Although there was plenty of lightening this afternoon, the worst part of the storm passed through Sydney Airport fairly quickly. And yes, there was plenty of holding while they sorted things out.

There is still plenty of wind and rain now though.

Cool video, Grahame! Thanks for sharing :) QF438 (VH-VXF) ended up with us down in CBR after their GA at SYD... then VXF also ended its day here, arriving as QF708 from ADL.
