Approved by the Government today:

The first stage of construction is scheduled to start in the middle of this year with completion by 2017, prior to the Commonwealth Games. It includes two new wide-bodied aircraft stands, a three-level terminal development with four aerobridges and improved ground transport facilities.

How times have changed there. I remember pulling my suitcase off a trolley connected to a tractor. Then they moved with the times and you did it under a carport!

Indeed, fifth largest airport now for International passengers as well, getting close to hitting 1M a year, so desperately needed work.

Its a shame they can't do the whole terminal and put in 10-12 aerobridges. Then OOL would have a world class facility completed in time for the Games in 2018!

Could be wrong but my understanding was that airlines other than the LCC like JQ TZ and D7 didn't want to fly to OOL due to lack of facilities like aerobridges etc, EK was once rumoured as a potential customer. This may all change with the planed upgrade and attract new services.
