So..I'm thinking of booking seats 36J, 36K in upper deck economy for the wife and I on an upcoming flight from LA to Sydney on Qantas A380. I'm a pretty big bloke (in all directions!) and would like opinions if this is a good idea or not. I've checked out a few forums and for every person who says they're bad seats there's someone else who says they're ok.

SeatGuru shows 36JK as red seats, limited recline, etc.

Yeah I noticed that but even some of the reviewers on that site say they're actually good seats...confusing.

The space is no different to any other seating on the plane, the exit rows and 32 offering more leg room by comparison. 36k is also in front of the galley, so you can expect a disturbed rest if food smells and some noise disturbs you. The seats on the top for economy are considered better options for a number of reasons, you have a personal storage area in the window seat, the cabin is smaller and shares crew with PE so service is better. I think the loo to passenger ratio is also lower, meaning less chance of a queue.

My partner and I have sat in 36J and 36K a few times. These are great seats, regardless of what seatguru.com says. The recline is the same as any other economy seat and the noise from the galley was very minimal. The positives of sitting in the small upstairs economy cabin far outweighs the negatives. The meal service is fast and efficient and there was never a queue for the toilets. As others have said, having two seats together is much better than a row of 3 and you'll also have the side storage bin for extra bag space.

36F is a terrible seat if you're travelling on your own... 36D and 36E have no other way of getting out except past you and I can tell you that wasn't a great deal of fun all the way DXB-MEL!
