QF1 departed approximately 4 pm this afternoon and is returning to Sydney. It is currently just north of Goulburn at 9800 ft Looking at its flight path I guess it is burning off fuel.

Ch7 said that it was a cabin heater failure that occurred 1hr out of Syd.

Especially important as it is winter now!

Cabin heater.....

Now I'm not type rated on the A380, but I imagine it's like any other jet airliner and has PACK's that air condition and pressurise the cabin. Not cabin heaters.

Cockpit warning that engine bleed air to cabin heat maybe.

Now I'm not type rated on the A380Not yet :-P

VH-OQI (http://flightaware.com/live/flight/VHOQI) apparently suffered a pack's failure on climb which lead to a pressurisation problem.

Returned to YSSY after dumping enough fuel to conduct a safe overweight auto-land at normal speed on 16R just after 7pm local.
Vacated at A5 and taxied up A to Gate 24 under it's own steam supervised by numerous tenders.

Scheduled out of YSSY 0930 this morning. (tbc)

Not yet anyway Amsy, ;-)

One PACK should be able to pressurise the cabin no problem (that's the point of redundancy), but personally, I wouldn't want to go all that way across the water with only one :-).

I dare say EDTO makes the choice for you, as does the diminished pressurisation and climate control capability.

Well there's probably the EDTO thing as well, but I wasn't sure if they would run the A380 under EDTO.

There shouldn't be any diminished pressurisation control. One PACK should be able to pressurise the cabin.

From QF Source:

QANTAS A380 VH-OQI QF1 Sydney Technical Return.

August 3, 2016

QANTAS A380 VH-OQI operating the Sydney – Dubai sector of QF1 Sydney – Dubai – London Heathrow was at 31,000 ft to the north west of Parkes when it initiated a rapid descent to 10,000 ft then returned to Sydney for a safe landing. The rapid descent would seem to indicate a pressurisation issue.
