I've been a little out of the loop of late, but, did anyone see that coming? I'd not heard any rumor and innuendo about it at all?

I've gotta say when I first saw the new branding, I loved it. But the more I see it and think about it, it seems that they've overdone the new 'roo. They've removed its paws and for many around the world it may not be instantly recognisable as a kangaroo.

Yes I agree that with every tweak of the livery, the kangaroo looks less and less like a kangaroo.
However, I like the grey stripe.

The new standalone logo looks quite good but on the aircraft? To be honest I''m not too sure what to make of it. I do like the silver tones on the rear fuselage and on the kangaroo. Not happy with the amputated roo. I'm glad the kangaroos are only on the inside winglets and not outside. The titles are a bit meh it took me a while to get used to the '07 titles but I did grow to like them, maybe these will too. I'm in two minds about the engine logo. On one hand the two tone red looks really good but it's bit garish maybe if the stuck with the reshaped triangle logo similar to the engines on the' 84 and '07 design and at similar proportions it would look better. I love how the incorporated the retro roo roundel into the livery. It reminds me of Air France and how they retained their flying seahorse logo in some form throughout their livery redesigns. Having said that I feel the aircraft name in retro font clashes with the rest of the titles. Maybe if they moved the roundel from the nose and had a black and white retro roo roundel on the engines instead of the red roo it would look better.
Anyone know how many aircraft are still getting around in the '84 design?

Qantas "New Era" Livery & Dreamliner Next Generation Cabins
Qantas launched their "New Era" livery on Airbus A333 VH-QPJ this morning, with the aircraft arriving from Kona as QFA6004, and then being towed into Hangar 96 for the launch by Tug Blue Delta.
The Next Generation cabins for the Boeing B787 Dreamliners were also on show, with Business and Economy seat pods setup for inspection.
Livery Differences: New font used for the Titles, Aircraft Name & Retro Qantas Kangaroo logo on nose, full kangaroo on the engines instead of the red triangle, Kangaroo on the inside of the winglets, different
Airbus A330-300 titles and logo, silver stripe in front of the red on the lower fuselage, wing like silver flash on the new stylised Kangaroo.
Here are some images from today's launch.

Rowan McKeever
4th November 2016, 08:31 PM
They announced entire fleet by 2020 so I can't really see why the QLink fleet wouldn't be done. Would be very strange to continue the 2007/8 livery just for QLink...

does anyone know when the next aircraft are scheduled for paint and what type? I figure that on average there needs to be up to a couple a month repainted to meet a 2020 target.

A330-300 VH-QPI is meant to be off to SIN soon, next to be repainted. After that I'd probably say (pure guesswork) keep an eye on any of the 738s which are still in the 1980s livery heading to SIN (especially if there's a QF77 with no corresponding QF78) or, less likely, TSV.

Here's a comparison of the old (2008) and new (2016) scheme on the A333 from photos I took in BNE about a month ago. Does anyone know when we will see the next aircraft type to get the Silver Roo scheme? As far as I can see, we have three QF A333s so far.

It may well be the B789, but that's still a fair way off. It's been more than three months since the new scheme was unveiled, I'd have thought that we would have had more than three aircraft the same type done at this point.

True Ray - I was in the US when the announcement was made and missed the "2018" after "March" in the AA article. I reckon you're right with 738, before October.

As this is a relatively minor change I doubt there will be a wholesale repaint, Just like the last change. So no doubt a/c will get repainted when they are due for a repaint, so I am not surprised they are not more in the new scheme.
There are still about a dozen 737's, plus similar number of Dash-8's and a couple of 717's in the pre 2007 livery. So no doubt we will see them repainted.

Except that QF announced the entire fleet would be repainted by 2020, so unlike last time they obviously don't intend to string it out over 10 years or more.
FWIW I think the next will either be a B738 or a B717 - there happens to be a pre-2008 livery B717 in the hangar in CBR so quite possibly it will go to TSV or WGA for repainting while it's already on the east coast.
Ash W
5th February 2017, 10:20 PM
Yeah it does say 2020 but it also says will be done during scheduled repaints. Something doesn't add up either way anyway.
I personally wouldn't be surprised to see a hybrid livery of some fuselage changes(titles underneath , wing tip and a/c name) but 2007 roo on tail and logo Most wouldn't notice the difference.

Word is at work that the first Qantaslink aircraft won't be painted till at least the second half of 2018. Sad really because some of those q400 and 300's are looking very tired. Doubt very much we will see any 200's get the new livery. But again things tend to change quickly over here at the moment so anything goes.

I know I am replying to an old post, been offline for a 6 weeks or so. Simple fact none of the Qantas livery changes since the 1984 change have been that big, so for the most part no to little need to rush them through. Unlike say when Virgin went from Virgin Blue to Virgin Australia, or a major change like American Airlines.
For the most part it is the plane nuts who would notice differences in the Qantas liveries, and even then, this plane nut doesn't take that much notice.

The Qantas belly title starts behind the nose wheel and runs back to the engines - on the A330 it is located between the main gear (B738 has exposed main gear tyres, so logo could not go there)

Why would Qantas be painting VZR when VYF, VYI, VYJ, VYK & VYL are still to be painted & are in the oldest livery still flying? Doesn’t make sense.
Rowan McKeever
18th October 2017, 07:44 PM
We’ve been pondering that same question... but, there’s no 78 scheduled and XZD is on 71, so it definitely looks as though VZR is up for a random repaint!?
Greg Hyde
19th October 2017, 11:02 AM
Wouldn't it depend on when the next maintenance is due ?
Rowan McKeever
19th October 2017, 12:15 PM
I would've thought it would depend more on when the next repaint was due. Considering none of the remaining VYx series have been repainted since delivery in January 2006 (VYL; earlier, obviously, for the others) and VZR not since delivery in August 2011, I (like most of us) would have expected the VYx then VZA-VZE and ZQx to be done before the likes of VZR.
Perhaps this says something of the quality of the paintwork and finish on the respective deliveries.
Greg Hyde
19th October 2017, 02:50 PM
Has any gone to SIN for a repaint without maintenance ?
Also, they are one a/c down with VZZ grounded in Sydney.
Rowan McKeever
19th October 2017, 03:12 PM
As far as I know, all the ones that have been repainted in Singapore have only been repainted in Singapore (i.e. no other maintenance work).
It's also my understanding that VZZ is having its WiFi installation done while awaiting repairs, which means at least for the first week or so the network isn't really 'one down' as such.
Greg Hyde
19th October 2017, 05:03 PM
Sorry Rowan, My mistake.
I'm surprised that they are taking a/c out just for a repaint rather than timing it with other tasks (maintenance).
Fred C
19th October 2017, 05:42 PM
It is very hard to maintain an aircraft while it is being painted.
Engineers don't like breathing spray paint and painters don't want engineers in the way.
It is hard to do any work whilst it is covered in brown paper and masking tape.
So planes get painted without any maintenance.
Rowan McKeever
19th October 2017, 06:06 PM
Technically, repainting is maintenance in that it prevents rusting and other types of damage to the airframe, as well as optimising the aerodynamics and fuel efficiency of the aircraft. As Fred says, though, quite hard to do a repaint concurrently with other maintenance (though, often, an aircraft will be programmed to have a maintenance check with a repaint following straight after, or vice versa).
Greg Hyde
19th October 2017, 07:39 PM
[QUOTE=(though, often, an aircraft will be programmed to have a maintenance check with a repaint following straight after, or vice versa).[/QUOTE]
That would be logical to do the repaint directly after a maintenance check but I suppose the issue is to co-ord the maint.. and paintshop

18th January 2018, 10:10 AM
Qantas will honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians with a special livery on its newest Dreamliner to enter the fleet.
This will be the fifth design in Qantas’ flying art series, which started more than 20 years ago, and will be unveiled when the Boeing 787-9 is completed next month. It will be the second flying art aircraft currently in service with the national carrier and the only one dedicated to international flights.
The unique livery reflects the long, rich history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and is in keeping with the airline’s commitment to championing reconciliation and promoting the best of Australia to the world.
The latest design has been conceptualised by leading Indigenous owned design studio Balarinji, which has developed all of the flying art aircraft.
The new Dreamliner carrying the special livery (registration VH-ZND) is the fourth to enter the fleet, and will be welcomed into Australia with a special arrival event in Alice Springs in early March 2018 before entering service on routes like Melbourne-Los Angeles and Perth-London.

Emirates to repaint Qantas A380s
Eight Qantas Airbus A380s will be repainted in the airline’s new livery by Emirates Engineering.
Beginning in March 2018 the aircraft will be stripped and repainted at the Emirates Aircraft Appearance Centre in Dubai, which Emirates says is the largest aircraft painting facility in the world owned by an airline. In 2017 that facility repainted no fewer than 38 aircraft, as well as installing special decals on Emirates A380 and 777 aircraft.
“As the largest operator of Airbus A380s with over 100 aircraft in our fleet, Emirates Engineering has built strong expertise over the years in the maintenance and repainting of this aircraft type,” Mohammed Jaffar Nasser, Emirates senior vice president of engineering maintenance, said in a statement on Monday.
“Our goal is to promote Dubai as a centre of excellence for Airbus A380 maintenance. We have the knowledge, infrastructure, competence and the confidence to achieve this goal.”
Qantas and Emirates Airline already have an extensive commercial alliance in place, while Emirates says the new aircraft painting agreement “heralds the start of collaboration in the areas of maintenance and engineering”.
The new deal will also see Emirates replace the landing gear on one Qantas A380 in February.
Emirates says it is the “most experienced” A380 maintenance, repair and overhaul provider in the world, having completed 110 C-Checks on the aircraft to date. Currently Qantas sends its A380s to Lufthansa Technik in the Philippines for heavy maintenance checks.
Interestingly the A380s will be repainted in Dubai just as Qantas withdraws from operating there with its own aircraft.
Currently Qantas flies twice daily to Dubai en route to London with flights originating in Melbourne and Sydney. But in late March Qantas’s Melbourne-London flights will switch to operating via Perth with the Boeing 787-9, while Sydney-London flights will return to operating via Singapore.
Qantas announced its new livery in October 2016.
“Updating branding on aircraft will be sequenced with scheduled re-paints, to be completed in time for the airline’s centenary in 2020,” Qantas said at the time.
To date A330-300s have been repainted in Victorville, California, while some 737-800s have been repainted in Seletar, Singapore, Fokker 100s have been repainted in Seletar and with Douglas Aerospace in Wagga Wagga, and some Dash 8 Q300s and Q400s have been repainted by Flying Colours in Townsville.
With Qantas operating 12 A380s, it is not clear where the remaining four aircraft will be repainted.

First Qantas Airbus A380 repainted in new livery
The first of eight Qantas Airbus A380s being repainted in the airline’s new livery by Emirates Engineering has arrived back in Australia.
Operating as QF6012, the Qantas A380 VH-OQF landed in Sydney a little after 0700 on Wednesday morning, following its 14-hour journey from Dubai.
The aircraft had been in Dubai since Saturday, March 24, being repainted at the Emirates Aircraft Appearance Centre.
It was announced in February Emirates Engineering had won a contract to repaint eight of Qantas’s 12 Airbus A380s in the new livery.
The new livery, launched in October 2016, features a “streamlined”, pawless kangaroo on the tail of the aircraft and a new font. A silver band also extends from the tail to the rear of the fuselage, among other changes.

According to the QANTAS timetable A380s are operating QF81 from Sydney to Singapore from 16 - 21/4/18. The reciprocal QF82 is operated by an A380 from Singapore to Sydney from 16 - 20/4/18 arriving the next day. There is no QF82 departing Singapore on 21/4/18.
Could it be that the A380 operating QF81 on Saturday 21/4/18 continues to Dubai for repainting? It would save some ferry costs.

Yes, that's correct James - OQL will operate QF81 on Saturday and will then position SIN-DXB as QF6013 I think it is.

James Smith
8th June 2018, 06:54 PM
Thanks for the information, Rowan. According to the QANTAS timetable QF81 to Singapore will be operated by an A380 on Saturday 16 June with no returning QF82 to Sydney on that evening.
The A380 will continue onto Dubai similar to how OQL got there. The repaints are taking approximately 18 days from when the A380 leaves Sydney to when it returns which has it due to return around 1 July.
QANTAS will need all their A380s in service during July as QF127/128 will be operated by an A380 from 30 June - 2 August and QF81/82 from 5 - 13 July.
