Evening all,
JAL today (19JAN17) revealed planned operation for summer 2017 season, effective from 26MAR17.
Tokyo Narita – Sydney eff 26MAR17 Boeing 787-9 replaces 777-300ER.

It looks like a great product on the 787-9. However you'd have to think that JAL are under a bit of pressure with loads due to all the new Japan-Australia flights that have opened up recently. There has been ANA's return on the Tokyo-Sydney leg as well as Qantas reintroducing Brisbane-Tokyo and Melbourne-Tokyo.

JAL will be the 10th Dreamliner operator at Sydney Airport, joining Air India, Jetstar, Air New Zealand, United Airlines, Xiamen Air, Vietnam Airlinew, All Nippon Airways, Scoot, and LATAM (LAN).

It's an interesting reduction in capacity, although dropping F probably won't hurt.
I flew JL771/772 over the break (773), as well as NRT-NYC and return (788 and 773). 771 and 772 loads were quite strong.
The 788 was quieter and seemed a nicer scale, although the window shades can be annoying on daytime W-E flights (the have "plugs" they can deploy in case of failures). Seating and soft product is the same on both aircraft.
