QF & EK have announced a 5-year extension of their existing partnership with a couple of major changes from March 2018:

* QF1/2 will be re-routed to operate via SIN, not DXB;
* QF35/36 MEL-SIN will be upgauged to A380; and
* QF37/38 will be increased from 3-weekly to daily A330 service.

Brilliant news! It seems Qantas is finally listening to its customers. Can't say I'll miss the transit in DXB. One would imagine the MEL A380 service will arrive in SIN in time to link up with QF1/2. BNE passengers may also be able to fly QF to LHR via SIN again, which is fantastic.

Wonder what will happen to the EK A380 SIN service ex Mel. Anyhow nice to have them back to SIN, now if only they had a return day service.......

I was thinking similar re. EK. I'm 3/4 expecting to hear a rethink on the EK MEL-SIN-DXB.

Gentlemen,

Look at what "he" is doing. Currently going west from MEL there are 1x380 daily DXB/LHR, 1x330 daily plus 567x330 to SIN, so 17 flights. Replaced by 1x789 PER/LHR, 1x380 SIN, 1x330 SIN 21 flights for MEL an increase.
From SYD 1x380 DXB/LHR, 2x330 SIN, 21 flights. Replaced by 1x380 SIN/LHR, 1x330 SIN. That seems to me to be a loss of 1 daily 330 for SYD. Am I correct??

BNE is supposed to be getting an extra direct EK 77W, 354 seats arr. 18.35 dep. 22.25, DXB. So BNE will have EK departures at 20.45 380 DXB, 22.25 77W DXB and 02.35 77W SIN/DXB

I don't really see your point Dennis, it is an upping of capacity for SIN. Its no different to what we had before the announcement today from March (1xA380 SYD-DXB-LHR and 1xB789 MEL-PER-LHR). SYD-SIN is currently only two daily and the aircraft is obviously bigger, so whilst you lose some capacity to through travellers to LHR I am sure that there will still be ample capacity on SYD-SIN.

If I'm correct I believe this will only use 1x A380 frame of the two freed up from the QF9/10 swap, so I would expect further announcements in the coming months as to where the second spare frame will be used. The removal of the A330 and I assume the cancellation of the flights numbered QF81/2 will free up some A330 frames no doubt as well. Initially this may be used to facilitate the fitment of Wifi to the fleet and the refurbishment of the two remaining old config A332s, however ultimately the aircraft freed up from that will be used to add capacity somewhere on the network or open up new destinations.

I think QF81/82 remain it's QF5/6 that end on March 25

Any chance QF81/82 routes through ADL again in the future to connect to the SIN-LHR service?

I highly doubt it given that ADL pax will be able to get on a domestic flight to PER then connect with the QF9.

If I'm reading Dennis's post correctly, he seems to be suggesting that SYD is missing out to the tune of 1x daily A330 departure (to anywhere). What should be stressed is that this announcement (just like, obviously, the announcements of QF9/10 rerouting and anything else about the deployment of the B789) is not a complete picture. As Zac has said, we know that the A330 fleet is to have WiFi installed which will require one A330 to be offline for a week at a time during that work. We also know there is at least one more A380 to be redeployed (albeit they will undergo a cabin upgrade, etc), which could see an additional A330 released from an Asian route. My point is, it's just as likely there will be a new route ex-SYD using an A330 that's been freed up elsewhere.

I highly doubt it given that ADL pax will be able to get on a domestic flight to PER then connect with the QF9.

And given they can also be routed on EK via DXB to London and dozens of other European ports.
