I can just see it...next week, go arounds will be the latest craze for the media

A QANTAS international flight bound for Manila has made an emergency landing at Sydney Airport.
An Air Services Australia spokesman said the pilot was forced to turn back to Sydney shortly taking off from Sydney's international airport.

"Air traffic controllers received a call from the pilot declaring an emergency and proceeded to give priority clearance for a landing at Sydney," the spokesman told AAP.

He said details of the nature of the emergency were not yet available.

He said the flight landed safely at about 3pm (AEST) and passengers and crew were "fine''.

He was unable confirm the type of aircraft or whether the passengers had disembarked.

"It was a Qantas flight, but I'm not sure if it was a 747,'' he said.

It comes a week after an explosion blew a hole in a Qantas jet flying from Hong Kong to Melbourne, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing in Manila.

Qantas was yesterday completing checks on oxygen bottles on its fleet of Boeing 747s.

Comment is being sought from Qantas.

Not a 747, not a 737, not an A330 but a.........

Hydraulics, nothing major but not worth taking all the way to Manila (we already have one AoG there, we don't need another!)

I witnessed the event in person as I was there at the time. The aircraft was clearly visible while dumping fuel off Botany Bay which made for quite a sight! It made a safe landing shortly after and was surrounded by fire trucks and escorted to the gate with fire trucks surrounding the aircraft for quite some time before dispersing.

Hi there

Be good to see some comments from CASA:rolleyes:

The people who matter at QF are doing the best job they can under the circumstances, but the regulatory authority needs to start looking at QANTAS closely from the top down.

Although i doubt CASA will do anything until the inevitable happens:(

I and several other spotters were approached by channel 7 and 10 about the incident. Unfortunately they didn't get much cooperation or 'sensational' stuff to use and left shortly after. I asked one reporter from channel 7 why all the Qantas bashing and all I got was a smile and 'thanks for your time'.

when your in the business of transporting many hundreds at one time in a tube you should expect media attention...I don't see it as bashing, just reporting a story that the public has a right to know about.

Qantas gets scrutinised intensely because their reputation is second to none in terms of safety, I guess you could say that the media is keeping the bastards honest.

The pilot called "pan" and advised of hydraulic issues, some sort of alarm noise was audible in the background while he was talking to the ground.

The pilot seemed very calm throughout the whole incident however he was quite adament and advised on numerous occasions they had to land "ASAP".

Heck no!
Not a big deal at all. But the crew certainly did the right thing - I wouldn't want to be going across a lot of ocean with a hydraulic system out in a twin.

I was at the mound this morning and 2 guys (spotters) sold out to the media who were approaching everyone holding a camera and asking for photos and/or video of the incident.

I told them I couldn't help however these 2 fellas rolled and handed over some stuff.

Just to think Nick, you could have put Pentolta on the map...maybe next time.

I think it's funny how this one hydraulic incident is front page news. While it's timing is poor for Qantas, it's amazing how many other hydraulic "issues" on aircraft (from a multitude of airlines) have been totally ignored or simply not reported to the media.

I guess while the irons hot....

I told the reporter that these incidents happen all over the world every day in their hundreds and I havent seen any of those end up on Channel 10 (reporters were from 10). She didn't have an answer for me and walked off.

Nigel, If I were one of those sleazy paparazzi looking to make a few bucks I'd have given them something, but maybe after they knew I'd taken my shots with the Pentolta they may have declined my snaps :D:D (the snaps were pretty crap as I was shooting from the end of 25 through the heat haze toward 34L).

They were keen to grab something though, the lady reporter did all the talking in her low cut black dress and blonde hair and makeup.

Hell, why not just make up some utter rubbish that they'll lap up and then when they show it, tell Media Watch on ABC what you've done and so how gullible the commercial channels are.
(I've done this sort of thing before .... ;) )
