Jetstar to bring Japan jets home to feast on Tigerair demise
Jetstar will bring more of its jets back home from Japan to boost its domestic fleet as it faces a delay of up to two years in the delivery of its new Airbus A321neo aircraft.
The budget Qantas subsidiary was set to receive the first of the new single-aisle, long-range variant A321neo jets in August 2020 with 18 to have joined its fleet by the end of 2022, enabling it to expand further into popular Asian travel destinations. But the order was put on hold last May when the COVID-19 pandemic brought the aviation industry to its knees.

Jetstar reveals new A321LR livery, celebrates 18 years in the air
Budget carrier Jetstar has released first-look images of its new A321neo livery ahead of its planned deliveries, and in celebration of the airline’s 18th birthday.
Jetstar said the first of its 38 A321LR jets will arrive at its base in Melbourne “in the coming months”, about two years behind schedule in light of the pandemic.
The new livery retains the iconic Jetstar-orange underbelly and wingtips, however, now sees the colour extend onto the aircraft’s tail.
The new A321 jets will also boast wider seats than Jetstar’s existing narrowbody fleet, more overhead storage space, flip-down smartphone and tablet cradles, USB charging ports, and 50 per cent quieter engines.
Jetstar said the paint used on its new A321LRs is longer-lasting and reduces paint weight by up to 30 per cent compared to its predecessors, which will result in fuel savings of up to 108 tonnes per year across the fleet, reducing CO2 emissions by nearly 350 tonnes per year.
It comes as the airline celebrates 18 years in the air.
Jetstar was established as a low-cost subsidiary of Qantas in 2003, as a response to the entry of low-cost carrier Virgin Blue to the market. Jetstar took to the skies for the first time on 25 May 2004, with its inaugural flight from Newcastle to Melbourne Tullamarine.
“Today we’re excited to not only be celebrating our 18th birthday but also unveiling a new look for our incoming fleet of NEOs, representing a new era of flying for Jetstar,” said Jetstar Group CEO Gareth Evans.
“These modern aircraft are world-class in terms of performance, comfort and sustainability, ensuring our customers will enjoy a new range of benefits on board.
“With the NEOs arriving in our 18th birthday year, their arrival symbolises how we’ve grown to become the largest and most successful low-cost carrier in the Asia-Pacific region.”
A further eight aircraft are expected to be delivered between August 2022 and May 2023.
Meanwhile, the airline also anticipates welcoming 20 A321XLR (extra-long range) jets between 2024 and 2029, allowing the airline’s narrowbody fleet to fly to destinations even further away.
Evans said the extended range of these NEOs will also open up new international opportunities for the budget carrier, which could see Jetstar expand its international network.
The order was first announced in early 2018, with deliveries then expected to begin in 2020.
The aircraft will be configured in a single-class cabin of 232 ergonomic seats. The jets utilise fuel-efficient CFM LEAP engines, which reduce fuel burn by at least 15 per cent compared to the existing A320/21 fleet and reduce noise by up to 50 per cent.
Jetstar said its new A321neo fleet will first be deployed on domestic routes such as Melbourne to Cairns and the Gold Coast, before the airline looks to expand to short-haul international flights.

Jetstar Airways (JQ, Melbourne Tullamarine) expects its new A321-200NX(LR)s and A321-200NY(XLR)s to be providing more than 50% of its narrowbody capacity by the 2027 financial year. The Qantas Group, owners of the low-cost carrier, made the disclosure during an investor's briefing in Sydney on May 29.
Jetstar has seven A321neo(LR)s already delivered from a larger order of 23. Once all those aircraft arrive, deliveries of fifteen A321neo(XLR)s will begin. A Jetstar spokesperson told ch-aviation that the eighth A321neo(LR), VH-OFW (msn 11380), will land in Australia on or around June 18. The spokesperson said the airline expects 18 of the A321neo(LR)s by the end of calendar 2024. Concurrently, the airline will begin phasing out many of its A320-200s, with those retained used on domestic routes
The Qantas Group said they will primarily use the A321neo(LR)s on short haul international routes, including to Denpasar. Jetstar has a dominant 51% market share on routes between Australia and Denpasar. The airline also sees growth opportunities beyond Indonesia and is starting a Sydney Kingsford Smith - Rarotonga service in late June using the aircraft type. The A321neo(XLR)s will fly on medium-haul international sectors and have the range to fly to markets such as Singapore Changi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta from any Australian capital city. The existing 11-strong fleet of B787-8s will be retained and focus on Jetstar's medium to long haul sectors, including flights to Japan and South Korea. The Qantas Group says the new
Airbus narrowbodies will open up a range of new destinations.
Participants in this week's briefing were told that Jetstar was "leveraging its low-cost position" and brand to strengthen and grow outbound leisure routes from Australia, including to Japan where Jetstar anticipates a 36% market share on the country pair this financial year. In addition, the airline wants to launch into new markets, highlighting North Asia as a focus region, and boost its partnerships to increase reach. Jetstar currently has 49 interline and 14 codeshare partners.

I've gotta say, I flew on the new JQ A321neo recently. From a customer comfort perspective, what an absolute disappointment. The A321 is the widest single isle plane out there, yet the seats were absolutely tiny. I don't know if Jetstar is trying to save on weight, but the overall comfort could have been so much better. To think they use these aircraft on overnight flights from Bali, without even a proper headrest, is crazy. I'll be avoiding it at all costs.

don't forget that each airline will choose it's own seat config and layout ,
I flew on Austrian Airlines A321 a few years ago on a flight from Vienna to London , one of the best flights on a int Europe route of 2-3 hours I ever had,
It depends on the airline , though I think if airlines want to use these on longer flights ie , Sydney > Bali , or to Japan from AUS as Jetstar is wanting to do , then they will need to focus on passenger comfort

I don't see any A321 or 737-10 going into Ballina unless there's a substantial runway widening and lengthening.
Existing 738 and A320 operations require a dispensation due to the less than standard 30m width, while the 1900m length is a challenge for ops with the current crop of jets, let alone heavier ones.

thanks Yusef , I checked and see that runway was only resurfaced this year after 10 years , not widened , I suppose on a perfect day with zero wind a A321 not fully loaded might be able to land / takeoff , but those days are rare ,

From a piloting perspective , a zero wind day is far from perfect . A head wind whilst landing and taking off will reduce the runway used . Zero wind days are rare , thankfully .

The paint job has been messed up. May be fixed before delivery

Are you referring to the orange paint along the wing fairing on OYU, Stirling. If so, the engine mount is covered by a plastic that is only a slightly deeper colour to the orange paint, with it giving the impression that the paint goes higher up the fairing. If the covering wasn't in place I think that the orange along the fairing would be identical to other Jetstar A321LRs.

The shade of grey of the actual paint. It is not metallic at all.

From Airliners Net the following was contributed to answer a question as to whether VH-A5A was to be a A321 or A320.
"According to their half year FY24 results they are due to receive 5 A320neos in FY25 and have 10 total on order."
I cannot find any reference to this A320 order for Jetstar in the QANTAS half year FY24 results or Jetstar's. Additionally, as Greg has posted, Planespotters.net is listing A5A as an A320 for Jetstar, while Airfleets.net is showing it as an A321neoLR.
Confirmation would be appreciated to enable accurate recording for the members of this forum. ;) Plus other reasons.

No Typo, JQ is expecting A320neos (Fleet renewal).
The source (other then above) is highly reliable.
It will either be added to the VH-Reg or spotted at TLS to confirm

On page 30 it states that 5 A320neos are scheduled for delivery this FY25. And in AA this article also confirms the order for 10.
Btw how many A320ceos were reconfigured to 186 seats? On the JQ website and planespotters it states they are all 180 seat aircraft?
