QANTAS ANNOUNCES A380 DELIVERY DATE

SYDNEY, 7 August 2008: Qantas announced today that it would take delivery of its first A380 aircraft on 19 September 2008.

The Executive General Manager of Qantas, Mr John Borghetti, said the airline would welcome its first A380 aircraft into the Qantas fleet at a ceremony at Airbus’ Toulouse factory and fly it via Singapore to Sydney, where it will land on Sunday morning, 21 September.

Mr Borghetti reconfirmed that Qantas would operate its first A380 commercial passenger service from Melbourne to Los Angeles on 20 October 2008, and its first Sydney-Los Angeles service on 24 October. “This is the first of 20 A380s to join the Qantas fleet, with a total of three being delivered by the end of 2008,” he said. “We will be progressively introducing A380 services from Sydney to London via Singapore from early 2009.”

Mr Borghetti said the Qantas A380 would offer the airline’s customers the best cabin design in the sky. “Our Creative Director, world-renowned industrial designer Marc Newson, has overseen the design and development of all four classes on board – First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy – and all cabins will provide new levels of comfort, innovation, and style,” Mr Borghetti said.

“The A380 is an exciting addition to the Qantas fleet, and our customers and staff are all eagerly awaiting its arrival.”

I know that <snip>

There was talk a few months back that it might be touring some other states and visiting...just wondering if that was confirmed as going ahead or has been canned, if anyone knows.

(Drop the eye rolling, Rhys, or you're outta here. Andrew was simply pointing out the origin of the media release. -mod)

The aircraft will will undergo some proving sorties prior to EIS. This will involve ground and air training.

It is confidential at this time, but will be made public in due course.

No chance of that happening unless it's the company one used for company business.
I don't like the chances.

Well thank goodness it'll be coming in on a weekend! :)

So there will be about a month between taking delivery and the first international flight. Not too long, not too short.. :)

Premium economy seats would feature USB and RJ45 (ethernet) ports. The USB ports will be used for "viewing of content" on the inflight entertainment system. It would also allow recharging of USB-powered devices.

Won't the A380 have to be in Australia for 40 days before it can start services, due to regulations? Or have I missed something? ;)

Well that might just throw a spanner in the works. Would the numerous trips the A380 has made down under count towards that 40-day regulation you're referring to?

QANTAS' first-class passengers will have private suites and business customers will get flat beds in the world's biggest jetliner, industry sources said yesterday.

Economy passengers can also look forward to more comfort in new seats on the Airbus A380 aircraft, which is due to start flying to Melbourne late next year.

Airbus has announced an A380 demonstration model would visit Australia next month.

Qantas has ordered 20 super jumbos, which, typically, will have 525 seats over three classes.

It is believed first-class passengers will have private cubicles, while business class will feature a new Skybed that is fully horizontal.

The current Skybed is not completely flat.

Qantas executive general manager John Borghetti said yesterday his airline's A380 would have between 450 and 500 seats, allowing more room for passengers.

Mr Borghetti would not comment on the first and business-class plans, but said economy passengers could look forward to a more comfortable seat.

"It's got unique features in it that currently don't exist," he said.

"The economy class seat probably has the biggest change that's happened to such seats for two decades." Oh really! I wonder what this can be, apart from those 'Green' seats? Or, is there something more perhaps?

Qantas expects to start A380 passenger services in October next year, with a Melbourne to Los Angeles flight.

The plane will also be used on the Sydney-LA route and on the Kangaroo route to London.

"The economy class seat probably has the biggest change that's happened to such seats for two decades."

When you compare it against what is already flying with Qantas, it is a vast improvement in comfort and innovation.

It will certainly be difficult to fly on the 744's once you ride the A380.

Isn't the main change they are refering to the fact that the back of the seat does not recline, rather the seat cushion moves forward to give the same effect, but without effecting the person behind. I beleive Cathay has some of these.

No idea - does this regulation only apply to a brand new type ?

Whenever B737s, A320s, A330s etc are delivered they usually enter service a week or so later so perhaps the "40 days" may only apply to new types. If so, I wouldn't like to be the QF people who planned the first revenue flights as it would appear to be a monumnental SNAFU.

But if a "40 days" rule does apply to new types entering service in Australia, then it makes you wonder about regulatory standards around the world as Emirates put its first A380 into revenue service a few days after taking delivery. And SQ only waited 10 days or so before putting its first A380 into service and we're talking about the two most popular "pin up" airlines on this board.

So if Australian regulators have this cautious policy what does that say about the regulators in Dubai and Singapore ???

The seat back does recline, in addition to the seat cushion moving forward. It is a combination of both that give the extra comfort and support.

I believe all the seat innovations are the major changes i.e. foot net, laptop power. reading light underneath the IFE screen etc.

Hahaha... none taken buddy! :D

Absolutely hilarious how everyone here automatically associates my name with VAustralia's 777s.. I must have made one heck of a [crazy] impression. Next mission is getting VA to name an aircraft after me!! :D

But yes, Nigel and Bernie you're both correct.. I'll be bouncing around like a kangaroo with shock absorbers fitted to its feet when VAs first bird arrives! :d Boing! Boing!

Anyhoot, back on to the topic at hand. Is there any word on which runway the aircraft will come in. I remember with the SQ first flight it was purposely allocated 34L, so will it be the same again to give the chopper crews a better shot for photos and videos.. or will it fly over the harbour and come in on 16R?

Also, who's planning on getting out there? This could be a good opportunity for those members (like myself) who haven't met others on here to introduce themselves and have a bit of a chat. Is there any way we can come up with an impromptu get-together.. or should we just go with the usual 'say G'day on the day' introductions? :)

I'll definitely be out there this weekend. Weather reports are the moment are very good. Let's hope it stays that way. :)

Daniel,

Catch the train to the Domestic terminal and then taxi ($10 or so) around the corner to the mound.

On the topic of who is going.... It would be nice to meet other members I assume everyone will be congregating at the mound?

Dan Collins
17th September 2008, 10:29 AM
Planning to be there, but is everyone going to be at the mound? I'm thinking with a 34L arrival the beach might also be a good place? Though I guess the mound will be great for when she slows down (and guaranteed viewing for either 16R or 34L).

Dan

NickN
17th September 2008, 10:59 AM
At that time of the morning any photographs would be heavily backlit due to the position of the sun, wouldn't be worth going to the beach.

Sarah C
17th September 2008, 11:08 AM
I was at the Observation Deck a week ago. It is still open and they have screens actually showing the live departures screens (the ones with the regos were better). It would be a great spot if it arrives on 16R but it would be a gamble. The First Class Lounge and other construction is really affecting any south views.

I can only imagine the sight at the QF domestic terminal when it rolls past to go to the hangar!

Dan Collins
17th September 2008, 01:30 PM

Good point Nick. I've not had trouble viewing from the Beach before, and I'll be trying for some video capture, but the lighting doesn't always work in the early hours and the camera loses focus quite easily, particularly with the fence there.

Really hoping for a 16R arrival then :) hehehehe...

Dan

Tim Bowrey

It would be a great spot if it arrives on 16R but it would be a gamble.

You will have the same problem with backlit from the Observation Deck as the beach as its arriving morning.

So if its taxiing streight to Hanger 96 after arrival, that means it will taxi close and slowly past the mound which will be very special to see.

Shameel Kumar
18th September 2008, 12:01 AM
Weather forecast still shows a nice sunny day, so backlighting from the Beach or Old Tower carpark will be a real issue. Darn :(

I guess for those of us who will be out there on Sunday, the Mound seems the safest bet. :)

Besides at the actual mound, is there a place you can park your car safely and then walk over to the mound (apart from airport parking) ? I know there's that area just before the helicopter pad, but what risk will there be of getting some sort of fine due to airport security?

Nigel C
18th September 2008, 07:26 AM
So if its taxiing straight to Hanger 96 after arrival, that means it will taxi close and slowly past the mound which will be very special to see.

That's incorrect. Twy Bravo and Charlie near the Shep's Mound aren't Code F taxiways, so it won't be vacating to the east.

Taxiing to Bay 9 or 10 is a possibility, and if they've opened Bay 61 within the last 3 weeks then it too could be an option.
The other option is to get the aircraft to Bravo-2 then have it towed down Dom-1 apron to Hangar 96.

I won't know for sure what the plan is until Sunday, and by then I'll be too busy to be posting anything here.

Latest weather I have seems to suggest winds swinging to the south west, so a 16R arrival could be on the cards.

NickN
18th September 2008, 09:56 AM
If it is going to be a 16R arrival then the small grassy area on the river side of Airport Drv would offer some fantastic photos of the A380 on final approach and crossing the canal/road.

Philip Argy
18th September 2008, 10:02 AM
Basically people will need to stay glued to ATIS to find out what RWY is going to be in use. If it's not windy there may be multiple options, which could really set the cat among the pigeons!

The forecast suggests that Saturday will be the strong wind day, and that Sunday won't be as bad.

Rwy 07/25 is A380 compliant, and has been for some time now. There are no current works that would preclude it from using it as far as I'm aware (unless something has started within the last few weeks that wasn't planned before I left).

The SQ A380 has used 25 for departure, but I'm not aware if it's used it for arrivals yet. Minimum runway lengths would depend on weather, aircraft weights etc

Ever thought about climbing up that big billboard on the 16R car parking area?

Now there is an idea:D

If you see me on the 6 o'clock news with snipers surrounding me, you'll know how that eventuated.

This morning, one of the 'Hop On Hop Off' double decker buses was in the bus area just built near the mound... It was reversed into a spot to the rear of the compound. Now I was thinking, wouldn't THAT be a great spot to be on Sunday morning as it had straight sight-lines across 34L/16R, AND it was over the fence!

At this stage the aircraft will do a few harbor fly-by's weather permitting.

Should land about 8.55am-9am.

If it lands 16R it will proceed via A4 (hopefully) A and A1 cross the runway, shut-down on B2 and be towed to Hangar 96.

34L arrival the aircraft will rollthru to B2 if possible and be towed in as above.

If rollthru not possible will proceed A2, A, A1 then cross the runway as above.

Regards.

Can someone tell me where the A380 will be on Thursday 25th September, or where will it be flying to/from?

For those interested, the second aircraft will be named "Hudson Fysh", followed by "Fergus McMaster" and number 4 will be "Paul McGuiness". For anyone who doesn't know who they are, google it.

Afternoon everyone,

Is THIS (http://www.sydneyairport.com.au/SACL/Flight+Info/International+Arrivals/intarrivals.asp?d=21%2F09%2F2008&c=Airbus&g=1000&display.x=24&display.y=6) the long awaited arrival we are all waiting for, or something else? What has me  is by this time, is it not Qantas owned and NOT Airbus?

I do believe that that is actually an Air India codeshare flight. The code AI belongs to them, and the 'airbus' logo next to it is due to a past airbus code used which has no since been corrected, but has caused similar confusion in the past.

Oh yeah, I remember that discussion a little while back now...

But, there was nothing on there that I could find regarding the arrival time...

The quest continues I suppose!

Re the youtube video...

Wasn't the tail already painted before the fuselage?
Does it get repainted in between flight testing?
