Are these people serious? A new Australian LCC using Max 8s (when unclaimed Max aircraft are no longer piling up in Seattle)???
The supplied pic looks like a Max 9 or 10, with the extra exit.

Yes they are and why not.Looks like they have the financial backing.:)
The airline has the backing of US private investment firm 777 Partners, which announced in March the addition of 24 737-8s to the firm’s aviation portfolio, with purchase rights for an additional 60 aircraft.
The Miami-based company said it would place the single-aisle planes with its “growing portfolio of low-cost carrier investments around the world”, so you can only assume some of them will be for Bonza.

Any Maxes ordered in March would have been cheap, so they have that going for them.
Imagine what they would have to pay. to get access to Australia's only 737 Max simulator!
Otherwise it's off to Nadi or Singapore.

I've heard Gold Coast base to start.
Good luck to them but there aren't many markets that aren't currently served (or have been served prior to the recent lockdowns) by one of the other carriers. Especially in the 737-size markets.

Or “Straya Airlines” that’d get around the copyright issues and would suit the low cost market.

Bonza is the name of a new start-up in Australia, and is set to become the country's first independent low-cost airline. The start-up plans to launch flights early next year and will, initially, only fly domestic.
The airline is founded by a former executive of Cebu Pacific and Virgin Austrlia and is backed by private investment firm 777 Partners, which also has investments in Canadian low-cost carrier Flair Airlines and the Value Alliance, a network of low-cost Asian airlines consisting of Cebu Pacific, Jeju Air, Nok Air and Scoot.
Bonza is planning to operate the B737-8, of which 777 Partners has so far ordered 32 with Boeing directly, and which will go to both Flair and Bonza.

Bonza should do okay in the domestic market if it's a cheap airline who can weather whatever storms are heading our way... another lockdown, more closed borders, high inflation, etc...

Bonza to hugely expand its 737 fleet to match Rex
Budget startup carrier Bonza has announced a major expansion of its 737 MAX 8 fleet that will see it increase its aircraft from just two to eight within the first year.
The move significantly means it will match the size of Rex’s proposed 737 fleet, except its aircraft will be Boeing’s newer, more fuel-efficient MAX compared to Rex’s older -800 variant.
Bonza broke cover in October to reveal a plan to fly “point to point” leisure routes not serviced by Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin and Rex.
“This is another way in which we are focused on creating new market growth opportunities for regional Australian destinations, better connecting all of Australia, and in turn, stimulating direct and indirect job opportunities for the aviation and tourism industry,” said Bonza CEO Tim Jordan.
All eight MAX aircraft will be leased from Bonza’s primary US-based investor 777 Partners. Rival Rex currently has six 737s, with two more on order, though it is now predominantly concentrating on capital city, rather than leisure, routes.
It comes as Bonza continues its discussions and negotiations with Australian airports. The airline is expected to make an announcement in the coming weeks, solidifying its planned initial routes and aircraft bases.

Your points are all very appropriate and open to debate . I’ve been around a long time , I’ve seen this type of operation come and go over the years , both in Australia and overseas . I wish them all the best and look forward to reviewing their viability in a years time , unless of course they are just another “ come and gone “ airline by that time .

Also some interesting route choices.. MQL MCY? While MQL has seen VA 738s, that was to MEL .. could a MAX with pax/fuel even take off on MQL's 1800m runway?
David C
16th February 2022, 03:37 PM
I would imagine a MAX would have no problems at all with MQL 1800M runway . QF operate the 737-800 off HTI with its 1750M runway to MEL , which is considerably farther in distance than MQL- MCY .

738 only needs 4000ft at minimums, MQLs 6000ft would limit MTOW to 150000lbs on a 30 degree day at sea level
David C
16th February 2022, 08:51 PM
Doing a bit of mental arithmetic, it’s MTOW would about 32000 lbs under its max allowable MTOW of 182000lbs . Assuming that 32000lbs is fuel , that would leave about 6 tonnes of fuel after conversion to kg as it’s fuel upload , which would give it about 2’5 hrs of flying time or 1200 NM . I’m not a pilot , and not sure if any of this is indeed logical , but I had some fun trying to work it out . Cheers one and all .

Exclusive: Bonza 737 likely en-route to Australia
Bonza looks to be on the brink of launching imminently after its first 737 MAX flew from Seattle to Hawaii – likely meaning it’s en route to Australia.
Australian Aviation can reveal its first aircraft, VH-UJT, departed Seattle at 4:38 pm on 29 July and landed in Honolulu at 7:44 pm.
It comes weeks after we broke the news the budget airline was seeking 200 cabin crew to start “immediately”. The airline was originally targeting a mid-year launch, but in May hinted that was likely to have slipped back to September.
Bonza is gearing up to begin flying on 27 routes to 17 destinations in a move that could revolutionise the local industry. It’s seeking to fly “point-to-point” leisure routes not serviced by Qantas, Virgin and Rex, mostly skipping out major capital cities.

Touchdown! First Bonza 737 lands in Australia
Bonza has confirmed that its first Boeing 737 MAX aircraft has landed on the Sunshine Coast on Monday morning, as the budget startup speeds towards its commercial launch in “late” September.
It comes after Australian Aviation reported on Saturday that the jet, VH-UJT, had departed Boeing Field in Seattle, and was making its way towards Australia, via Honolulu and Nadi, as flight AB001.
It also comes just weeks after the jet took its first flight sporting freshly-painted Bonza livery last month, as it was ferried from Southern Logistics Airport in Victorville back to Boeing Field.
“We are beyond excited to welcome our first aircraft to Sunshine Coast Airport and with so much buzz around the country for Bonza, we hope today is also exciting for the communities we’ll be flying to,” said Bonza CEO Tim Jordan.

Bonza plays down CASA launch delay
Bonza has played down the delay in it achieving its crucial clearance with CASA to launch, arguing it had “expected” the process to be thorough.
The airline was hoping to begin operations last month but is unable to do so until it receives the crucial Air Operators Certificate.
However, in new comments, chief executive Tim Jordan said, “The regulator performs an incredibly important role for the country.
“We are bringing new aircraft into Australia, and we would expect the process to be thorough.”
When Bonza does begin commercial operations, it will fly so-called ‘point-to-point’ leisure services not serviced by the capital city-focused Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin, and Rex.
Bonza said 93 per cent of its network — 25 out of its 27 routes — are not currently flown by any other airline, while 96 per cent are not served by any other low-cost carrier. Flights are expected to cost around $50 for each hour of the flight.
Destinations on Bonza’s initial route map include Melbourne, Avalon, Sunshine Coast, Mildura, Albury, Cairns, Coffs Harbour, Mackay, Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Rockhampton, Tamworth, Townsville, Whitsunday Coast, Bundaberg, Gladstone, and Toowoomba.
Australian Aviation has been charting Bonza’s progress with a series of exclusive stories, including revealing how the company quietly registered a third 737 MAX with CASA last week.
The formal acquisition of a new aircraft, VH-UBI, came after Australian Aviation revealed its second, VH-UIK, was en route to Australia and its first, VH-UJT, is flying up and down the east coast.
Bonza initially planned to launch with a fleet of two to three MAXs before increasing its ambitions to target having eight.

The front ( nose ) gear was well off the runway way before either of the main gear left the tarmac . The starboard main gear was off slightly before the port side main gear , but that’s not unusual .

It seems a shame if CASA was holding up the Air Operator's Certificate with aircraft sitting idle during the busiest time of year. Of course if they were waiting on further information from Bonanza or were really still processing the application fair enough but they can't have been unmindful of the consequences of going off on their holiday break without having issued it.

Purple seal of approval: Bonza achieves its licence to fly
Bonza, Australia’s only independent low-cost carrier, has been granted its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). The airline is now finalising its preparations to go on sale with its first wave of flights out of the airline’s home base on the Sunshine Coast.
Bonza has been working collaboratively with the regulator as it works towards connecting communities by gradually introducing its initial route map of 17 destinations and 27 routes - 93% of which are not currently served by any other airline and 96% of which currently have no low-cost carrier.
“This is an historic moment for Australian aviation as we get ready to launch the first high capacity airline in more than 15 years, and the country’s only independent low cost carrier,” said Tim Jordan, CEO of Bonza.
“The excitement for what we are about to deliver is palpable and the timing couldn’t be better. Demand for domestic travel is high and Aussies deserve for travel to be a basic right for many, not a luxury for the few. This has never been truer with today’s cost of living challenges. With the approval from CASA, 2023 is set to be the year of seeing more of your own backyard for less,” added Jordan.
Bonza will soon go on sale with its Sunshine Coast base followed by its Melbourne base. Jordan urges Aussies to download the Fly Bonza app and sign up to be the first to know when its initial phase of flights will be up for grabs.
The airline’s digital approach means the app will be the only place to book with the exception of registered local travel agents. A digital support centre will assist customers with queries or those who choose to get support with making their booking.
“I’d like to thank our team of legends who have worked very hard to achieve today’s milestone working alongside CASA who do incredibly important work regulating Australian aviation. Now, our focus turns to connecting communities and we hope to see many Aussies onboard soon,” added Jordan.

Just checked the app (had to uninstall and reinstall to get the booking function - no biggy).
Hopefully some better options out of AVV to MCY and return when they have some more a/c.
A Thursday flight to MCY, with a return on either Saturday morning or the following Tuesday morning means no long weekends on the Sunshine coast for us. No Sunday or even Monday return flight is not going to make them a popular option for the Melbourne and Geelong market, unless they have something out of Tullamarine which at this time they don't.
For now the only benefit is the major price drop the mainline carriers have taken. What was a $2800 return airfares for 4 in September is now down to $1600 with VA (out of YMMB of course) , whilst QF is a little over $2k for the same trip. Interesting QF only has one flight up and back on a Friday and Monday whilst VA has 5 and JQ has 2.

Yes Greg, I read the same thing that Bonza aircraft four and five would be delivered directly to MEL. However, if you look at the Bonza timetable of flights and their introduction dates posted by Radi (post #174) there are no flights originating in MEL up to 20/4/23, so no aircraft are required there as yet. The only flight to Victoria is a return flight from MCY to AVV operating three times per week which will be operated by a MCY based aircraft.
So, it must be a change of plan by Bonza to postpone the introduction of MEL originating flights when finalising the commencement dates of each of their routes.

They haven't mentioned which Melbourne (Tulla or Avalon).
I expect Avalon based they have already done a MCY to AVV and return.
I'm not sure if the Avalon Airshow (Fri, Mar 3, 2023 - Sun, Mar 5, 2023) may effect their plans. Haven't heard if they are doing a demo/static display at the airshow.

Bonza's first revenue service was MCY-MKY (BNZ593/594) which commenced as scheduled on 14/2/23 flown by VH-UIK. The next service on the launch schedule was to be MCY-AVV commencing on 21/2/23.
However, Bonza was due to commence its MCY-PPP service (BNZ777/778) on 31/3/23 but it looks as though it started on 16/2/23 flown by VH-UJT. Does anyone know whether there has been a revision to the launch schedule posted by Radi on #174, with some earlier commencing dates? Alternatively, the PPP flight could have been a one off. If amended, can any changes be added to this thread. Alternatively, the PPP flight could have been a one off.

The first flight was a launch flight not a commencement of RPT flights, it had two paying passengers on board and lots of press etc and a non standard timing of essentially a day trip to proserpine. There were no similar flight subsequent to this. The flight on the 16th may well be a training flight but there are flights next week that are bookable so may well be an advance of the schedule!

Bonza launched 9 destinations from Melbourne where it will base two aircraft on Thursday:
Australia’s newest airline Bonza has today sweetened the deal for Aussie travellers by putting its Melbourne base on sale with some routes available to travel for Easter. Twelve routes to 11 destinations have been added to the Fly Bonza app with prices starting from $49 to $89 per person one way.
Today’s news comes as Bonza continues to get wheels up across its route map of 17 destinations and 27 routes including its first flight to Victoria on Tuesday when the inaugural Sunshine Coast to Avalon took flight. Yesterday, the purple party continued as Bonza arrived into Townsville for the first time and tomorrow, the airline touches down with customers for the first time in Rockhampton.
“Today is a huge day for Aussie travellers as we deliver on our promise to make air travel accessible to the many, not the few,” said Carly Povey, Chief Commercial Officer at Bonza.
“Today millions more Aussies have the chance to book a low cost flight to see a loved one or explore their own backyard. As a proud Melbournite, I’m very excited to have the opportunity to fly directly to regional destinations to catch some winter sun in Queensland or explore the wine region of Mildura,” added Povey.
Today’s news means all of Bonza’s initial routes are now on sale with Aussies said to be embracing the airline’s app first approach.
“The routes on sale today use our Melbourne based crew and aircraft including our fourth plane, Malc, named after a dear legend who recently passed away,” said Povey.
Travellers can book now for Easter, July and September school holidays with flights available until the end of October. The first flight from Melbourne Airport is confirmed for 30 March and travellers are encouraged to get in quick to be part of Australian aviation history that day.

Budget airline Bonza launches regional flights between Mildura and the Sunshine Coast
After years of disruption due to the pandemic and the recent summer flood crisis, north-west Victoria looks on track to make more money from tourism with today's launch of budget airline Bonza in Mildura.
The new Australian business has delivered the first departing and arriving flights between Mildura and the Sunshine Coast, and will continue offering two flights per week from Mildura to the east coast for $79 each way.
Trips between Mildura and Melbourne will launch in April for as little as $49 each way.
Passenger Bridget Pennisi has family in the Sunshine Coast and Mildura.
She said the introduction of direct flights between two locations meant she would be
able to spend more quality time with interstate loved ones.
"It means I'll be able to visit my mother more, which I haven't been able to do recently, and particularly COVID made it really difficult here," she said.

Two Bonza-branded planes are jetting around Europe for the Warsaw-based charter airline Enter Air, as supply chain issues at manufacturers Boeing and Airbus collide with resurgent global travel demand.
The Boeing 737-8 MAX jets – registered to fly in Australia until late last year – landed at Warsaw Chopin Airport this week sporting Bonza’s purple livery and its slogan: “Here for Allstralia.”
The aircraft will be flown by Enter Air as it looks to respond to demand over the northern summer.
Enter Air it did not have time to repaint the aircraft in its own livery. Piotr Bożyk
Bonza chief commercial officer Carly Povey said there were no changes to the airline’s expansion plans despite its planes being diverted to Europe.
She told AFR Weekend that its owner and primary lessor, 777 Partners, had sold the planes before Bonza was licensed to operate in Australia. “The buying and selling isn’t unusual in terms of fleet management,” she said.
777 Partners sold seven of its Boeing jets destined for Bonza and its Canadian low-cost airline Flair to North American leasing firm BBAM last year after a slowdown in demand at Flair and delays in Bonza’s licence.
“Now that we have our [operating licence], we have four aircraft in Australia operating our 27 routes,” Ms Povey said.
“Our growth plans remain the same and, having just completed our route map rollout on Tuesday, we’re now very focused on earning the respect of Aussie travellers.”
Bonza chief executive Tim Jordan has said the airline would fly up to eight planes within its first year of operation. Bonza launched in late January out of the Sunshine Coast, and opened its Melbourne base in March.
The airline has a fifth aircraft on order, but more could be hard to come by as demand for planes soars, even as supply chain issues at manufacturers Boeing and Airbus delay deliveries.
Virgin Australia is still waiting for word from Boeing on when it will receive the first of eight 737-8 MAX jets after the manufacturer said there would be delays in its order book due to issues with one of its suppliers.
While the aircraft were meant to be used on its new Cairns-Tokyo route from late June, Virgin is having to launch the trip with its older, smaller 737-700 aircraft.
Qantas has also cited the supply chain crunch as a reason for its decision to wet-lease two Airbus A330s from Finland’s Finnair, with outgoing CEO Alan Joyce saying these planes were “rare” to come by. Wet-leasing is where one airline provides the aircraft and crew for another to operate under its name.
Enter Air chief executive Grzegorz Polaniecki told Polish media that due to a long delay in receiving the planes and a busy travel period, the airline did not have time to repaint the aircraft originally meant for Bonza.
The planes are two of three that Bonza has given away in recent times, after The Australian Financial Review revealed 777 Partners had re-directed another jet to its Canadian carrier Flair in April.
The redirection came after aircraft lessors repossessed four of Flair’s 18 planes, alleging the airline had fallen behind on its payments. 777 Partners owns 25 per cent of Flair.
Bonza is expected to run 24 flights a week with its two Victorian-based jets. The carrier’s other base is on the Sunshine Coast.
The company does not plan to service the lucrative and competitive routes between Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, and instead will try to stimulate demand in underserved regional markets by flying direct to tourism hotspots.
In an interview with the Financial Review in February, 777 Partners founder Steve Pasko cited Flair’s success as one reason the private equity group was interested in investing in a budget carrier in Australia.
“Prior to the pandemic, we were able to show that we could grow the Canadian market quite substantially by offering fares that were 40 per cent to 50 per cent lower than the incumbents,” he said.
“That’s what drove us to Australia. We think we can do the same thing.”
The airline only this week started operating on all 27 routes to 17 destinations that it had flagged as part of its launch plans.
Ms Povey said the event was “historic” and marked “the finish line for our initial rollout and the start line for Bonza earning the right to grow”. She said demand was strong for the group’s unconventional routes.
“As the Australian winter fast approaches, forward bookings including the July school holidays and June public holiday weekend are also looking strong as Victorians appear eager to escape the winter chill for the warmth of Queensland,” she said.
”Bonza does not have any flights to or from Sydney – something it has blamed on high airport charges and the unique slots regulation at the gateway.
Melbourne Airport boss Lorie Argus said she was “thrilled to be the only capital city to feature in Bonza’s launch network”.

Not sure, Rowan.
Back in the late 80's during the pilots strike, there were a large number of wet-leased northern-hemisphere based operators working in Australia. Not sure if they used foreign cabin or there a special rule in operation to cover the strike.

That's what I thought Mark. Someone on the other forum thought there was a restriction so that FATAOC holders could only operate charters and private flights domestically, but I can't see that written anywhere.
On this, someone reminded me the other day that Smartlynx was granted a FATAOC earlier this year for their A330s, and was intending to work with CASA to add their A321, A320 and B737. One wonders if this might be the source for Bonza's wet leases.
