Interesting flight path yesterday for VH-VKG, JST61 (SYD -SGN) over NSW. According to FlightAware departed SYD 16:04 and returned at 17:45.
According to several folks on facebook, the engines on this aircraft sounded 'horrendous' on departure and again when it overflew Western Sydney and the Highlands on its way back to YSSY. Some heard reports of engine trouble on ATC radio.
FlightAware suggests VKG is scheduled to operate to DPS this evening, in about 20 minutes actually.

Unless you were flying it, there could be a dozen things wrong with it and you mightn't know :) In this case, though, it sounds very much like something went wrong with the aircraft while it was preparing for departure, or mx crew were unable to resolve an issue within the operating crew's hours.

The return flight last Wednesday was taken by VFJ which arrived in CNS from DRW 90 mins before XNW, but still didn’t leave CNS for another hour after XNW arrived. Together with operating a test flight at CNS 5 days later, I’d say it’s pretty likely XNW went tech.

News item from Australian Aviation about the current unserviceability for Jetstar's 787s.
Jetstar has blamed a freak series of events including a lightning and bird strike for grounding multiple 787s.
On Tuesday, it emerged the problems also led the budget airline to cancel flights to Phuket and Japan alongside its earlier cancellations to Bali.
Jetstar chief pilot Jeremy Schmidt revealed, “Unfortunately, our Boeing 787 fleet has been impacted by a number of issues, including a lightning strike, a bird strike, damage from an item on the runway and delays sourcing a specific spare part for one of our aircraft due to global supply chain challenges. The part has to be road freighted across the US."
https://australianaviation.com.au/2022/09/lightning-and-bird-strike-ground-bali-jetstar-787s/
According to FlightAware the Jetstar 787s not currently operating with their last flights are:
VKA - flew MEL - SIN 23/8/22. This or VKB maybe the aircraft that suffered the bird strike.
VKB - flew BKK - MEL 31/8/22. This or VKA maybe the aircraft that struck debris on the runway.
VKJ - flew MEL - PUS 24/8/22. Presumably for planned maintenance.
VKL - flew OOL - SYD 17/6/22. After lightening strike.
I thought that Jetstar would have redeployed some of their A320s, A321s or their new A321neo to DPS to take and bring home passengers, even if having to make a refuelling stop in DRW. They must be short of aircraft or crew to not be able to redeploy a few of their narrow bodied fleet, even for an overnight return flight. Maybe they have and still face aircraft shortages. I know that the A321neo is due to fly to DPS today but this looks to be a flight previously planned.

Interestingly, avherald hasn't reported either of those top two issues so its difficult to find any further information.

I can add a little from what I've read;
* Debris strike reportedly occurred at SGN
* Bird strike reportedly lead to a cracked windscreen which needed to be changed.
* 2nd NEO still under manufacture and hasn't flown as yet (no help there)

An update of my post of 7/9/22 on the unserviceability of Jetstar's B788s after two weeks:
VKA - is still in SIN and has not flown since 23/8/22;
VKB - is still in MEL and has not flown since 31/8/22;
VKJ - returned from PUS to CNS after two weeks on 8/9/22 and is back in service;
VKK - replaced VKJ in PUS on 12/9/22, possibly for repainting into the updated JQ livery with the orange tail as VKJ was there for two weeks which is about the right timeframe. Also, QANTAS was going to have their last three A380s repainted into the current livery in PUS before COVID hit. Has anyone photographed VKJ since it returned to service?
VKL - is still in SYD and has not flown since 17/6/22.
So, there are still four Jetstar B788s out of service with passenger angst still raging in the media.

VKB is due to return to service today operating JQ43 MEL to DPS departing at 9:10. This B788 has not flown since it arrived in MEL on 31/8/22.
VKL has filed to ferry from SYD to MEL this morning as JQ7991 at 10:00. This is the last of the Jetstar unserviceable B788s with VKB returning to service. Will it be written off in MEL following its lightening strike damage?

As I mentioned upthread Jetstar confirmed all aircraft back this week so no write off.
VKH operated a ferry from CNS to BNE yesterday then operated Wednesdays delayed JQ57 as JQ1057 to DPS , it’s about 5km from me at present in DPS so presumably same cabin and tech crew operating a return service today after a break.
Interestingly todays JQ57 has an 8 hour delay, no doubt waiting for VKH to get back, which makes todays JQ44 now an overnight flight. The normal overnight breaks should absorb the delays.

The last unserviceable B788 VKL has just departed MEL for DPS on its return to service. Co-incidentally, of all the recent Jetstar unserviceabilities this aircraft spent the longest out of service being repaired following its lightening strike on 7/5/22, nearly 5 months.
So yes Greg, the eleven Jetstar B788s are now all operational.

Interestingly it was VKL that was meant to operate that service, and normally JQ57s aircraft goes onto operate to Mel as JQ44 while the Melbourne aircraft operates JQ58 back to Brisbane, today JQ44 and JQ58 are showing as cancelled. That’s 600 passengers stuck in paradise. Doesn’t bode well for my return trip later in the week, there has been zero availability for weeks ex DPS to Australia for flight until Oct 16.

XNJ went to KUL on 31/01/24, believe for maintenance & paint and returned to the fleet in 06/2024.

After transiting to SIN earlier this month, XNW has left the JQ fleet and is due to (re)join 3K
Are all the XN_ birds going back to the 9V-reg?
Greg Hyde

XNW would be returning as it was deleted from the VH-Reg on 24/10/24 as exported to Singapore

That was its former 9V rego, most of the JQ aircraft that have gone back to 3K have used the old rego

An educated guess, yes. We won't know 100% until it appears on the 9V-reg.

Seems that way, XNN is heading to SIN today after performing a test flight out of MEL and then heading to DRW

Retaining its previous rego.
In the XN* block, only XNJ remains.

I have noticed both A321CEO (sharklets) VWQ and VWN have not flown since their last arrival into Melbourne for about a month now. Both getting some scheduled maintenance ?

Only VWQ, VWN is operating.
Unsure why though, probably some maintenance.

Thanks, yes just VWQ. I was looking at my dates a little to quickly. One site lists VWQ status as 'parked'. Intresting.

For some reason ps.net does that for aircraft that haven't flown over xx days.

Any word when JQ will start to rationalize their fleet ?
You would expect them to start offloading some of the older A320/1ceo frames ?

Jetstar would be using 6 of the A321neos as replacements according to the last results announcement, which aligns with their current numbers, presumably this will start in the next few months as we come off peak season.

Some of the older Classics have steadily been retired over the past couple of years, a lot of the VQ_ and XN_ registrations have been offloaded already.

From my records 1 x XJ*, 3 x JQ* and 7 x VQ* Jetstar registered A320's have transferred to QantasLink and 4 x XN* A320's have returned to Jetstar Asia with 1 still with Jetstar - XNJ. Also, the 6 x YX* registered A320's from Jetstar Japan are also still with Jetstar and were transferred for a period of 2 to 3 years between late 2021 and early 2022.
The 7 may return to Jetstar Asia or Jetstar Japan before any of the existing Jetstar A320's are retired.
On the flip side Jetstar has taken delivery of 19 x A321neos and 2 x A320neos since July, 2022, with the 10 x A320neos ordered to replace existing A320 classics.

Read elsewhere that VH-OYV brings JQ to 90 frames.
I expect that some of the Ceo's may go before they hit 100 frames

With this arrival (OYV) the total Jetstar Australia fleet will be at 90 aircraft.
Yes grh, I saw that post as well. However, my Jetstar aircraft count is only 89, including OYV. I'd be interested what total others may have so I can amend my records, if needed.

Hi James,
As a quick check, I downloaded the full VH reg & sorted by OPNAME, 93 frames.
Removed the ones that hadn't arrived, A5D, A5E, OIR & OYX, 4 frames
Giving a total of 89, your'e on the money.
