A security officer and an alleged robber have been killed during an airport shootout in Chile's capital, in what was believed to be an attempted heist of more than $US32 million ($48 million) in cash aboard a plane from Miami.

About 10 heavily armed robbers entered Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in three vehicles after tying up a security guard, Deputy Interior Minister Manuel Monsalve said.

"There was an intense exchange of gunfire," Mr Monsalve said.

Security officials "foiled a robbery by a highly organised, highly armed and probably very well-planned [group]," he said.

There were reports the Delta A350 at the gate next door was a casualty but it departed on time.

Delta Air Lines Plane Riddled With Bullet Holes After Shooting at Airport

A firefight near Santiago International Airport in Chile has resulted in a Delta Air Lines plane being riddled with bullets, according to reports.

A video of a report from a Chilean news channel has begun to circulate on social media showing the Delta plane at the airport, also known as the Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport, and the damage it has sustained.
