Hi all,
Have heard some rumours that the domestic and international car parks have been closed for spotting?
Are any locals able to confirm please?

Cheers.

There are large signs stating no photography. Rydges is apparently looking at opening up their balcony again.

Shame if that’s the case.

I admit I haven't visited P6 for quite a while. Security were very active after the incidents early last years, and the railings raised soon after.

It would be a real pity if the actions of idiots ruined things for everyone - yet again....

I have seen many a instagram story from the young spotters out there doing some very bad things. Why the AFP never came up and arrested these people I am not sure.

The younger generation has been causing all the problems lately, even in Melbourne. Time to grow up and have respect for the property they spot on or in. Or Ozzie airports will shut all access to spotters down.

I think you will find that the “young people” in question are only in question as a result of someone spreading garbage on social media. What they were allegedly doing would hardly be in Sydney Airports radar.

I think you will find the simple answer is that after a few successful suicide attempts and (likely) some unsuccessful one, Sydney Airport is mitigating the risk and closing carpark access for pedestrians and spotters

Almost :-)

would hardly be in Sydney Airports radar.Incorrect.

Sydney Airport is mitigating the risk and closing carpark access for pedestrians and spottersCorrect.

To prevent speculation;
- Recent unsafe behaviour has accelerated Sydney Airport's plan to address a wholistic approach to safety in P6.
- Suicide prevention measures is one component in their safety plans.

If and when I have more information to share re P6, I may update this post.

I saw a No Photography/No Loitering sign on the rooftop of the staff carpark at the International Terminal, but I didn't see any signage at the Domestic Car Park. It's been several months since I've been at either terminal, however.

There are some post about it on the forum somewhere explaining why.

Does all of this mean that SydSquad can't do their YouTube live broadcasts from those car parks now?

I believe they've gone back to using Rydges.

Hey Robbie,

Yes, unfortunately P6 is out of action for all plane-spotters, which includes SydSquad.

In partnership with the Rydges Hotel, on occasion SydSquad streams from their rooftop which offers similar views.

Mitigating risks and liability is often the crucial motivating factor in these types of situations. Sometimes a safety railing or waist-high fence just isn't enough.

Most of the big international hotel chains that we all stay at when travelling no longer incorporate outdoor open-air balconies into their hotel suites when they build their new properties.

But that wasn't always the case until recently.

It seems 'jumpers' (suicide) is what they're trying to avoid, for legal reasons or reputation risks.
