Sending a pet by air

I need to arrange to have a moggie sent to Tasmania and not sure what the arrangements are nowadays with the airlines. I know I can arrange through a professional pet transport company but what about dealing directly with the airlines? I want to get it flown from Melbourne to Devonport but Burnie (Rex) or Launceston will be OK too.

Any suggestions/personal experiences/recommendations of transport company?

Do you mean AAE will carry the cat themselves in their aircraft (overnight freight flight) or are you saying they will arrange the transport but book space on QANTAS or VB during the day? Just want to be clear.

They'll do a great deal if it will fit into a 3KG airbag!

They'll arrange for it to go in the belly of a normal RPT flight, I'm pretty sure they don't carry animals on their freighter aircraft.

Do what they do in the US ... put it in your carry on baggage and store it under the seat in front of you. :)

If you want your pet to travel at the same time, both QF and VB can arrange this. QF will count the cat as part of your baggage allowance, so if your travelling economy and travelling by yourself (1 piece per person) QF will possibly charge excess baggage, if travelling with others, you may be able to allocate the cat to another in your party. VB charges $55.00 and you have to take thye cat to their freight area at least an hour before your flight.
QF will let you check the cat in at the terminal also as long as you checkin 1 hour before the flight.

Try this mob - I've used them for a dog multiple times and always very good - will deliver to houses or can pick up from the airport - can supply airline approved cages etc.

Personally the extra $$ are worth the ease of the process.

I recently saw a dog (in a special cage) get put into the back of a Saab 340 (REX) down here in tasmania. Didn't seem too happy though.
