from some mates down there at the moment, wasn't an MFT or GFS plane...apparently a warrior and a 2 seat trainer that clipped. I'll post any more details I get.

Two planes clip each other over Melbourne suburb
One crashes into garage of house, pilot killed

A PLANE has exploded on the garage of a home after it clipped another aircraft in mid-air.

The pilot died in the Melbourne crash, which sent witnesses screaming and prompted the lockdown of a nearby school.

A police spokeswoman said it was believed two light aircraft clipped each other as they flew over the beachside suburb of Cheltenham.


One plane - identified by Moorabbin Airport manager Phil McConnell as a Piper Warrior with two people on board - landed safely nearby.

The other - said to be Cessna 150 - is believed to have crashed into the garage of a house on Lorna Street, killing the one person on board.

A Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokeswoman said there was an explosion when the plane hit the garage.

Victoria Police said the pilot of the plane was killed in the crash.

A police spokeswoman said the plane might have crashed into a shed or garage, but officers at the scene said it did not hit the house.

Around 30 firefighters were at the scene.

Eyewitness Alexandra Mikhman told the Bayside Leader she was stunned to see the plane plunge to earth.

''I was with my baby our for a walk I heard this noise and I thought some kids were flying a toy plane. Then I saw it drop into the garage and it burst into flames," she said.

''I was in shock. It was so scary. I had my baby. I started screaming."

The Herald Sun said the pilots of both planes were members of the Royal Victorian Areoclub.

The police spokeswoman said all students at a primary school at the end of the road were safe and well.

Cheltenham East Primary School was locked down and police were in attendance.

It was not immediately known if anyone was in the house when the plane crashed.

My thoughts are with this Pilots family. It is always extremly sad to hear of a pilot who is obviously just at the begining of a flying career passing on. I was only just reading an article this morning about the mid air collision at Morrabbin a few years back.

A very sad event which I am sure is close in ways to most of us.

That is a fairly general statement there Andrew.
My father knew a guy in Canberra in his late 50's or early 60's who owned a Cessna 150A or 150B that was in near original condition, and he certainly wasn't just at the start of his flying career!

Although you could be right, perhaps we should wait til further details come to hand before making these sort of assumptions.

Just saw on Channel Nine News a story on the crash.

It showed a photo of the plane as it was falling to the ground.

The left wing looked pretty damaged. The story says that they both took off at the same time on the parrellel runways and cliped each other while climbing.

Perhaps he was, however there was no indication as to the age of the pilot, or indeed if he was flying for pleasure or for a possible career.

Absolutely unbelievable how they got that thing on the ground. Im trying to find an online pic of the damage to the warrior to post up here...the left section of the elevator basically looks like it has been through a metal muncher. Looks to be great work by the crew of the Warrior to get it down safely.

I know this might be in bad taste, & my condolences to the family of the pilot involved:(, but is it just me (or am I seeing things, or one image is mirrored), but has anyone noticed that the side damaged for BOTH aircraft seem to be on the same side? i.e. both have damage on the left side of each aircraft. Just something interesting that came up at work today.

I only saw an animated impression on the news last night, but I thought it showed the right wing of the crashed a/c impacting the tailplane of the survivng a/c (which is the only a/c the subject of the photographs below).

The only reports I've read sugested that the crash a/c was doing either a touch and go or a go around and impacted the survival aircraft on its final leg on approach.

Eyewitness accounts and the amateur video taken show the crash aircraft in a non-survivable almost vertical dive, suggesting a total loss of control - perhaps caused by an impact-triggered stall.
