Thanks for the info Gerald. :)

So I'm guessing most folks will be out there by around 7am? Let's hope this time there won't be the parking/traffic problems that occured for SQ's first commercial flight. :)

Excluding any rumoured flyovers of course!

Indeed. I just edited my post and brought the arrival forward to the earliest possible time assuming a straight up run out of WSSS. I don't want to get blamed for people being late!!

You're right, I reckon it might do a flyover or two...

Yes - I was just taking the dog for a walk 'before' it arrived and saw it cross Cockatoo Island at about 2500 feet on a heading of about 140 degrees at 08.15.

By the way, what's the reason for the sixty zero eight flight number?

Terrific shot and I'm wondering where you took it from and the equipment you used ?

My very rough video of OQA ("Qantas sixty zero eight") crossing the Parramatta River on final to RWY 16R:
http://www.argystar.com/argystar/002.MOV

Sorry for the poor quality - will have to practise a bit more to make these better given my [once filming] fixed zoom fixed focus camera!

The quicktime video needs to be viewed as small as possible to make up for the graininess. If you do that you'll be rewarded with what are almost distrails in its own vapour clouds off the back of the wings.

Not me Carl, no fluro vest, I was parked in the canal side reserve just off Qantas Drive with the other 50 cars. I did take a couple of shots off my ladder on the grass mound to the east, and then around near the hanger the A380 was towed to.

Credit to my Dad for most of these. I was shooting video while he was taking photos. A couple of the shots here were taken from my video camera.

What has changed at Qantas since November 2005, hard to believe this was almost 3 years ago.

1. The Qantas and Spirit Of Australia titles.
2. The kangaroo on the tail and the engines
3. No manufacturer logo on the engines (RR).
4. Five Vs Four windows at the back of the upper deck (or is it just different on both sides)
5. Crew uniforms.

OQA is named Nancy-Bird Walton, rather than Nancy Bird-Walton.

How long until Qantas moves the hyphen?

Actually, the hypthen is correct. Apparently she changed her name about 12 months ago. There was a lot of discussion about it at QF but she actually wants to be known as Nancy-Bird Walton, rather than Nancy Bird-Walton because her husband used to call her Nancy-Bird. So the name on the aircraft is what she wants to be known as.

Thanks Sarah. Qantas' media release for her 90th birthday (in 2005) used no hyphens and no sources use the new hyphenation.

As much as I would have liked to be there, I had to work. I missed it by only a few minutes as when I ventured outside the security guys said it had just flown over the warehouse.

Hopefully I will be able to get out to see it in the coming days, weeks.

I saw so many people there, so i hung out in the car for a while and noticed people putting ladders in front of other ladders and then i thought, we could see spotter rage here:rolleyes:, the final thing they drove me away is when someone put up a circus ladder about 8ft high. I was never going to get a decent shot on the mound, i struggle to get a decent shot without the crowd:o. Got a few nice ones from Qantas Dr:D

Did everyone enjoy the morning yesterday? I know some of you think the aircraft looks a little less than glamorous on the outside, but the product is absolutely amazing on the inside and customers will truely benifit. The three coloured zones in the main cabin create three uniquely cosy spaces (as opposed to the feeling of being lost in a sea of passengers.) To be 100% honest the green fabric in the photos dont do it justice. The new print on the CC uniforms contrast to the colours of the interiors off all zones as well.

whats the verdict?? is anyone booked on the !st commercial flight??

AJ - Thanks for the pics - nice.....

And I stand by my comments that the green looks quite OK - although the shade is a little lighter than it looked in earlier photos.

Here are some of mine. The photo quality is pretty poor but I didn't really have a choice. I only bought my first DSLR last Friday, so I barely had time to figure it out, and it only had a 18-70mm lens, so I had to bail-out on The Mound and stand by the fence at the Beach. Of course backlighting was a big drawback, but oh well, it was great to be out there nonetheless!! :D

With the advent of the A380 this sign needs updating:

PS. Krzysztof, congratulations on your 200th photo in the JP.net database. My 200th was the A380 too;) We had the same plan haha.

Tim

Hey Tim,

Thank you and likewise!

As exciting as it might have seemed it wasn't a part of the plan at all. It's rather due to traffic jam at JP's queue, hehe. I wasn't actually planning to go out to see the not-so-uglybus at all as I had an important concert that afternoon so I should've been sleeping rather than running around with 2.5kg hanging on my neck. But I'm glad I did, it was nice be there and see that.

See you out there soon,
K.

What are you talking about? I've already updated the sign!

See the sticker placed under the STOP part of the sign? I put it there quite a few months ago.:p

Philip Argy

Sorry, Nigel - I couldn't read it in the photo but now that you point it out, I can just make it out. :o

Nigel C
23rd September 2008, 11:01 AM
It's only a paper sticker with photocopier ink. I thought it would have peeled off or faded long ago, so I'm actually surprised it has lasted as long as it has!

It was put there after Andrew McLaughlin pointed it out to me.;)

How about you just replace the four a/c designations with "HEAVY"?

Nigel C
23rd September 2008, 12:20 PM
I guess that depends on people's individual interpretation of the word 'heavy' and how it applies to aircraft as they see them.

At the southern end (and possibly the northern end...I can't remember but will have a look tonight) of the western perimeter road there is now a sign saying don't proceed if anything above Code C (B737/A320) aircraft are taxiing.

Philip Argy
23rd September 2008, 12:50 PM
Why wouldn't "heavy" be interpreted as an aircraft that would usually call "heavy" after its call sign to signify a high probability of wake turbulence?

Anthony J
23rd September 2008, 02:16 PM
The A380 does not use 'Heavy' on the radio for wake turbulence.

It is in a new category - 'Super'.

Nigel C
23rd September 2008, 02:50 PM
Why wouldn't "heavy" be interpreted as an aircraft that would usually call "heavy" after its call sign to signify a high probability of wake turbulence?

Well it probably would be for people in the know, but most of the vehicle traffic on the airport doesn't listen to airband radio, and I'd say a vast majority of airport staff wouldn't have a clue that wake turbulence even exists in the first place, hence the need for signs that spell it out to everyone!

Philip Argy
23rd September 2008, 06:50 PM
I'd wouldn't be giving airside permits to anyone who couldn't understand the need to stay away from wake turbulence and vortex danger areas.

Nigel C
23rd September 2008, 08:07 PM
If you have a spare few hours and are willing to buy me copious quantities of beer or, even better some good single malt scotch, then I'll happily sit down with you and talk about all the considerations for driving airside and what the requirements are, including the different areas for airside driving and the importance of the signage and why it is where it is.;)

Cheers

Wow!
Excellent shot Shameel.
Looks so surreal with the motion blur. I reckon you should send to Qantas PR/Marketing Department as im sure theyd love to use it haha:)
But seriously, great shot and keep up the good work.
Look forward to your trip reports at end of year.
Quickly regarding the fedex- was the subsequent flight delayed with the engine problem or was it fixed relatively quickly?

Hahaha... well thank you for the compliments guys. :D

I'm not that good of a photographer, I'm better at enhancing photos as you'll see from my Flickr photos (you'll also notice I have a consistent 'style' of editing).
This was actually the first time I edited an aircraft photo in this way, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. :)

...and Andrew M, you'll just have to wait in anticipation to see what I come up with the VAustralia 77W. :D

As for sending it to Qantas, well I've had people tell me the same about sending my BMW edited photos to BMW Marketing Dept. ... but I haven't mustered up the courage as yet.

Hmmm.. maybe I should sent that QF A380 photo to VAustralia's marketing department. Give them a preview of what I can do for them and their 773ER. :D;)
