I have always wondered who does the allocation of A/C parking bays at the international wing of SYD. Is it SACL? Is there any way of finding out what flight departs from what gate on line, other than being physically at the airport?

Do airlines have preferences over certain gates? Obviously OW is Pier B while * is Pier C and the A380 is gate specific.

It is allocated by SACL. When I have more time I'll try to explain more!

I'm not aware of an online gate plan for daily activities.

Your One World and Star Alliance observation is generally the way it works, but there are always exceptions to the rule depending on gate demand at the time.

Understandably, the airlines prefer to have their aircraft situated close to their lounges if they have one, but again this isn't always possible.

Yeh u right Nigel. I did work experience there during November 2007 & i got to watch how they (SACL) allocate aircraft gates. The gates are normally allocate 24-48hrs before the flight arrives which i found it quite interesting.
