I was making a reservation for my flight in July and i came across this change of equipment for SQ 231 and 232 from 2nd June 09. This service will revert back to the 744 on 25th October 09. So i guess it's probably good for us in Winter to catch this 77W as the later flight would be in the dark.

Actually SQ231/232 used to be a 773 service, it changed to all 744 a few years back.. But yep should be good having the new seating on another night flight SIN-SYD.

Actually, SQ219 and SQ220 will be the only 774 services to SYD during this period. SQ220 is the outbound A380 flight.

Also on 02JUN09 ADL's 777 will become an A330. This will leave a shortfall of seats, so let's hope we get additional services.

I Can tell where they are coming from, especially on premium services ( Business class, etc) My last flight with SQ being in xmas period and new years. On SQ222 Business class only had 12 passengers on board and on return SQ233 Business class only 8 out of 42 seats in Business class available.
So its bitting hard I guess.

SQ231/232 now showing up in some systems as a refitted 773 (code 73A). SQ219/220 may be downgauged to -SR series (72A), with SQ233/234 continuing for the time being as 77W. 219/222 remains as the dugong.

What product do SQ offer on their re-fitted 773? and which regos are refitted?
If both SQ219/220, 231/232 been replaced by 777s, that means the 747 will no longer operates to SYD. An extremely SAD sights for being a proud 747 lover, and a long tradition of SQ 747 in SYD will be broken. :(

Amadeus shows this up:
SQ 231 aircraft type will be EQV from 18 June to 25 June. After 25th it shows me conflicting aircraft type for the starting and ending dates.
So it may or maynot be 773. I guess they are still in the process of updating the systems.

Evening all,
Some sad news here...
As per Sabre timetable display, as well as the airline's inventory system, Singapore Airlines' Singapore - Sydney final Boeing 747-400 service is planned for 05OCT09.
Final 747 flight on the Singapore to Sydney is SQ219 on 04OCT09, returning from Sydney the following day on SQ220
SQ219/220 is to be replaced by Boeing 777-300, with existing configuration.

Morning all,
Here is a chance for Sydney Spotters to get some SQ B772's
As per GDS inventory display on 10JUN09, Singapore Airlines' Singapore - Sydney SQ231/232 service, sees Boeing 777-200 replacing 747-400 starting 29JUN09.
The 777-200 is operating until 14JUL09, then switches to 777-300ER as originally planned
Not sure at this stage which B772 (SV*, SQ* or SR*) block it will be operating this flight.

I booked the flight SQ 232 on 26th June. So can anyone tell me which aircraft it will operate?
I really don't want those noisy B744s to operate again. It is sooo annoying that you will not have a proper/modern AVOD system and you still have to sit in an aircraft which is noisy and you can't sleep.
Grant Smith

A quick search of the SQ website reveals SQ232 is op'd by a 744 on the date you're flying.
As for your comment RE: "proper/modern AVOD system", you're kidding me right? Out of the 20+ flights on SQ 744's I've only ever experienced an issue with the AVOD once.
And as for not being able to sleep, take a sleeping pill or equivalent before your flight if you're worried about sleeping during the middle of the day

On the side my HKG-MNL on CX last Wednesday (777-300) the IFE in my seat would produce any sound. The purser re-booted it (the Linux duck was running for about 10 minutes)
Still no sound, so the Purser apologised and gave me US$25.00 voucher to use on duty free on any CX flight
Can’t complain

1. Out of 3 SQ B744 services I've taken, 1 of them has AVOD not working and they have to refund me US$50.
2. I just wonder how come SQ still put those planes with old AVOD system (I mean the modern ones = those on B77W, even those on A380 are not good enough as those on B77W) to serve such a high profile route.
3. Even it is in the middle of the day, I would still want a flight to relax, not to suffer from the huge noise from the engines. Furthermore, I've taken SQ B744s which made me feel severely headache upon landing.

Arthur,
With reference to your above post:
Seems you've gotten bad luck, but AVOD not working is not simply restricted to the 744, there are reports that even the 77W experiences problems (heaven forbid it's a machine and far from perfect). As for not being good enough, well to each their own (as they say).
If you're not satisfied with the AVOD, why not bring your own?
As SQ receive more "modern" aircraft the 744 will be phased off the SINSYD vv route and the aircraft utilised will be complete with "modern" AVOD...
If you suffer from sensitive hearing, why not consider buying noise cancelling headphones?
Failing all this, change your flight to the quieter more modern A380.

Are the system on A388 & B77W are EXACTLY the same?
I think those on A388 does not have the quick search button, hence a little bit inconvenient. Those on B77W has that function that you can quickly reach the media item by entering the code.
I wish I could take the A388 service instead, but it departs too late and will make my connecting flight to be the next morning. The SQ Fabulous stopover makes me no problem to sleep overnight for that, but if there's a passenger sitting around me confirmed with Swine Flu, then I may need to be stranded in Singapore for 7 days. There's too risky to it though.
Hence unfortunately, I'd rather been suffering in the Boeing 747 then risking to be isolated 7 days.
Meanwhile they are having new planes in, why don't they refurnish some existing aircrafts like those B772ERs, B772s, B773s and B747s to new seats (same as those on B77W) that passengers can have equal quality of service as soon as possible?
I think if there's a passenger booked an F class on B77W flights and is treated with old version B744 or even wose a B772 with no flat bed, I doubt the passenger will be happy with this.

So if you want to avoid contracting Swine flu, i think you are better off in Singapore.

B747's will be gone in about 6 months
B773's most will be upgrading shortly, but SQ has gone quiet on this recently
B772's SQ is selling/disposing of quite a few of these not sure how many will be left but they have A330s coming onboard and the B787 whenever she flies!

As I told earlier here, I took SQ 232 on late June and found out the whole B744 flight was FULL.
Now SQ has downgraded the service to a lower capacity B772 right now and a B77W with even lower capacity will commence service on 21st July. I simply worried about the loading as capacity SIN - SYD seems reduced on such a popular service hence more commutors may not be able to get on the plane.
Does anyone have an idea about the loading on SQ 231/232 these few weeks? To improve service quality, I think Singapore Airlines should scrap the current SQ 221/222 A380 service and downsize by B77W; then to add 1 B77W to SYD leaving SIN at 9 - 10pm and SYD at 9 - 10pm hence make it from 28 to 35 Weekly or even more.

SQ have always stated loud and clear that they wanted to retire the 744's. The economic downturn accelerated these plans. While maybe worthwhile, there really isn't a point for SQ to operate a 5th daily service to Singapore, as SQ operate their flights timed for connections in their hub in Singapore. I mean, SQ220 is timed for Asian destinations, SQ232 is timed for Indian / Asian destinations, SQ222 is timed for European / Japanese destinations, hence the A380 because of probable load, with SQ234 timed for the later European / Asian / African destinations.
If SQ were to operate a 5th flight into Sydney, where would the feed go once it got back to Singapore at about 3 - 4am? I don't think SQ want their passengers waiting for more than 3 hours in Singapore if they can help it.
I doubt SQ will operate a 5th flight especially when the 4th flight was a challenge to make decent. If anything, I think SQ231 / SQ232 could be upgraded to a A380 before another flight is added. Someone help me out... Is SQ234 doing better since SQ232 has been changed to a 777?
Alex.

That's alright Tim
The information I got is from airlineroute updates, which indicates it has changed to B772 till 20th July. But I believe if they have spare B77W it is probable and is a treat to customers to deploy a newer aircraft, particularly with new long-haul product in such a popular route as the last-minute aircraft change.
Furthermore, I don't think SQ 234 will serve late Asian flights, since it will land SIN after 11pm, where most Asian connections such as HKG, BKK, KUL has departed their last service. If SQ can launch the new overnight ex-SYD service, it will arrive around 5pm in SIN hence people can change their first SIN flights of the day to Europe/Asia, departing around 7am - 9am.
My suggested new service will be:
Outbound SIN - SYD 2230/0800+1 B77W
Inbound SYD - SIN 2250/0500+1 B77W
Passengers for HKG/BKK/KUL etc can connect their next service departing bewteen 7am - 8.30am in SIN, which includes a reasonable connection time of 2 - 3.5 hours.
Considering adding such a service, I think we gotta look at other Australian cities like BNE/MEL as they already incorporated such a ex-Aus overnight service back to Asia while SYD does not. Hence I believe such a service would have its market. In addition, CX 138 and AY 5848 is currently monopolise the direct ex-SYD overnight service to SE Asia, I believe SQ and other carriers should consider ulterising such a timeslot to compete with Cathay and Finnair.
Regarding SQ's B773, I heard they will be refitted with the new long-haul product and commence service on SIN - SYD Route on 22/7. (source: wiki) Does it indicates 9V-SYD (claimed refitted on wiki) will come to SYD on daily SQ 231/232 service?

as plane needs to be of the ground by 11.00pm. departure would have to be 10.30pm at the latest
in summer this will give an arrival time into SIN at about 3.30am, not very socialable
also if going to KUL, HKG or BKK, can get a direct flight that will get me there much earlier than a detour via SIN

Arthur,
Where do you get your timings from?
YSSYWSSS is roughly 8hrs give or take, a departure ex-YSSY prior to curfew (so for arguments sake say 2230) would get you to WSSS around 0700
SQ's current offerings are sufficient enough to offer connections to wherever you need to connect to.
SQ220 gets you into WSSS around 1400 - perfect if you're staying in WSSS.
SQ232 gets you into WSSS around 1800 - not too bad if you want to stay in WSSS or transit for a bit, enjoy a few beverages in the lounge prior to boarding..
SQ222 gets you in around 2200- not too bad for a euro/american connections.
Personally, I think 233/234 is overkill fulltime, but as a seasonal option is not too bad...

Grant, I think you have missed the 2 hour time difference with Singapore. A 10:30 pm Sydney departure will get into Singapore at 4:30 am now and 3:30 am in EDT. This is why MH and TG night flights depart Sydney and fly to KL or Bangkok via curfew free Brisbane to loose time so they arrive in SE Asia at friendly times.

Great!
I'm gonna take SQ 231 on 24/7! So I can try out the brand new refitted B773s! :)
Anyway, although it is good to deploy the newly refitted B773 to Sydney, it is ridicious that Singapore Airlines is simply reducing its capacity on both SQ 219/220 and SQ 231/232 by 24%.
These 2 flights will reduce from 2 B744s (contains 750 seats in total) to B773s (contains 568 seats), reducing 182 seats.
Such a move is really unacceptable, and Singapore Airlines should immediately use its subsidary Silk Air to launch a daily A320 service bewteen Singapore and Sydney to supply those lost seats, as demand on those services are high.

Evening all,
Save starting another topic, I thought I would put this here, as it is to do with Singapore Airlines.
Singapore Airlines from 28MAR10 is adjusting Airbus A380 operation on Singapore – Sydney service.
There are no changes on the Singapore to Sydney sector, which A380 operates on SQ221 flight.
However, inbound from Sydney, sees SQ220 operated by A380 instead of SQ222.
So basically,
SQ221 (A388) arrives same time, instead of departing as SQ222, the A388 will now depart at 0805 as SQ220. (Same as when A388's first started to YSSY)
So the aircraft that operates SQ219 will depart as SQ222.
But if both SQ231 and SQ219 are being operated by B77A's from MAR28th, the aircraft that operates SQ219 should depart as SQ232 and SQ231 should go out as SQ232. This option sounds better, i think.

Slight correction - the B777-300ER will now be on the SQ231/SQ222 and SQ233/SQ234 rotations, with the B777-300A on the SQ219/SQ232 rotation from 01 May (B777-200ER from 28 Mar to 30 Apr).

Has this decision been made to increase the productivity of the SQ A388 fleet? It doesn't look as though it is to enable a better fit and onward operation of the new Zurich A388 flights which also commence on the same day, or indeed HK or Tokyo from their schedules. The SQ A388 will still have a nearly 10 hour layover in Melbourne each day. Maybe it is due to excessive parking fees which they will still incur from the 777 layovers.

Melbourne is getting a schedule switch as well, with the new rotation being the somewhat suboptimal SQ227/SQ238 (1010 departure from MEL). SQ228 will then morph into the B777-300 (the refurbished ones later in the year).
It's been suspected that with only one additional A380 delivered in January, and none until late in 2010, there is not enough frames to operate the current rotations. Hence, with the adjusted schedules, they can dedicate two frames to just doing the Australian runs since all are same-day returns rather than the current rotations, which mean the aircraft get back to SIN too late to operate the next day's flight back.

I wish this schedule change can happen earlier or even immediately that I didn't need to suffer from sitting in a poor and dangerous B744 on SQ220 to Singapore.
However I just want to know SQ 220 departs Sydney at 8.15am (Summer Time) and 8.05am (Winter Time) and from what I saw the A380 arrives the next gate as my B744 when my flight is in boarding stage, i.e. 7.45am.
So I just want to know whether the A380 will able to turnaround in Sydney in 30 minutes from SQ221 to SQ220. Furthermore, the SQ 222 and SQ 234 are connecting London services, demand should be high; where SQ 220 nearly does not connect flights but it is just barely full (with few spare seats even early in peak season), whether A380 is suitable in this route or replacing with B772ER and launch 5th & 6th Daily will be a more feasible idea.
Wenglock M
26th January 2010, 12:47 AM
So I just want to know whether the A380 will able to turnaround in Sydney in 30 minutes from SQ221 to SQ220.
Arthur, as this schedule change (for the A380) only occurs wef Mar 28, the turnaround for the A380 in Sydney will be 120 minutes (0705-0905 from Mar 29 - Apr 03, and 0605-0805 thereafter).
However, whether SQ221 gets in early or ontime is another matter (my experiences have been varied on this flight, whereas they're usually quite timely on the other flights).
As has been mentioned on posts above, while this is not an optimal rotation for the A380 (even by SIA's own admission two years back when the A380 first started off on this rotation), they probably don't have a choice as they don't have the required number of aircraft to sustain the current schedule.

I wish this schedule change can happen earlier or even immediately that I didn't need to suffer from sitting in a poor and dangerous B744 on SQ220 to Singapore. Are you serious Arthur? SQ are famous for having a young, well maintained fleet and their 744's are (sans Global Economic Crisis) always in big demand when they are finished with them as they are so young (relatively) and well maintained. Just ask Air Pacific and Cathay for example
Surely you jest? Dangerous? Good Grief!

Looks like tonight SQ219 will be operated by a 772 9V-SVD showing on Libhomeradar or 9V-SVH which is showing on PP. Anyone able to confirm?
