in terms of 'time-saving' I personally love the idea!
I always use a Kiosk or Webcheck, its so simple.
Although from what I have heard from the trials of Self-tag is that a lot of pax have difficulty working out how to attach the tags......
Speaking of Self serve, my local Woolworths has been upgraded and includes 5 Self serve registers, I have on 2 occasions seen all 5 self serves with people at them and a checkout operator at another register twiddling there thumbs, with no customers...
Again I always use them at Woolies as its generally quicker...
Everyone is different, but my guess is that over the next few years we will see a lot of changes in regards to E-Customer Service :)

The Woollies checkout needs a major rethink.
Have used the ones at Woollies Macquarie Centre a few times.
Problem is you have to place the scanned item onto the bagging bench before you can scan the next item.
(The bagging bench weighs the item to see it agrees with what has been scanned.)
So you cannot get a head of steam up, (like Aldi) to get things done quickly, it is slow.
Good only for one or 2 items not a trolley load.

Isnt this what Air NZ are doing for their domestic flights?

Air Canada do the same domestically with self check-in.

Hypothetical: Say I have 35kg of luggage. Could I weigh it with 20kg in the bag, print out the tag then add the last 15kg before sending it down the belt to get away without paying excess baggage fees?
Safety wise, not a problem for an A320 but if ever used for smaller aircraft, it could be a weight and balance issue as well?

Yeah as you say good for a few things,
Hey try one of those MEGA 30 pack toilet rolls! Place item in the bagging area, place item in the bagging area. ummm it does not fit!:D

Correct .. with a few enhancements such as RFID chips for frequent flyers.
I've only used it once and it told me it couldn't process me, go see an agent.
I asked the agent what the problem was and got told that I was in an exit row and somebody had to ask me if I was happy with that.
"Yep .. that's why I booked the exit row!!"

Next thing they will be doing is asking passsengers to act as Trolley Dollies. What is it all coming to.Or it will be load your own luggage into the belly locker as you walk past.

Not too bad an idea.
Like Blue Check at SYD T2, you'd probably see a few staff around making sure it all goes well.
Guessing the computer would ask about flammable objects etc..
Overall, not bad, but even with this idea isn't it still necessary to visit a Bag Drop Counter?
Thus I don't really see the huge efficiency in it, unless its as simple as weigh the bag, declare no dangerous goods, tag the bag, insert bag into some sort of chute, and go.
In which case it gives airlines the ability to close quite a few of their checkin and bagdrop desks and open a sole Assistance desk where they do manual check-ins and bag-drops occasionally..
Gives the airline the ability to accuse a passenger of screwing up their own luggage if it goes missing too.

That's exactly how it works with NZ.

I was unaware of that! Thus I think it is an efficient and good idea. Cheers David.
