A LIGHT plane carrying seven people has made an emergency landing in Darwin Harbour.

The plane ditched in shallow waters in the tidal flats off East Point Reserve, on the outskirts of the city, shortly after taking off today.

A police spokeswoman said the plane came to rest about 200 metres off the reserve, at low tide, shortly after 8.30am (CST).

"All the people on board walked from the plane and all of them are fine," she said.

The passengers made their way across the tidal flats to a picnic area where they were met by police, firefighters and ambulance crews, police said.
