And so with the predicted possibility of rain, I'm just wondering how safe it is to have the camera out? I'm using a Canon EOS 450D with Canon 100-400mm lens. Can they take a bit of light rain?

Sure can, but minimise it as much as possible! Just give it a good wipe down when you're done. Obviously try not to get the glass wet, but the rest should be alright with a light shower.

You can just use a small kitchen towel and drape that over the camera and lens if there are brief showers.

Or take a plastic bag, cut out holes where needed and secure in place with a few rubber bands.

Thats actually a good idea lol, never would have thought of that one!

Thanks, will keep it in mind if I ever need to cover my camera!

I normally put myself and the camera in the car when it rains !

Cut a hole in the close end of an appropriately sized ziplock bag. Poke the lens hood through the bag and tape with waterproof tape (suggest electrical tape). Fit lens hood and pull bag over lens and body and seal shut. This technique worked perfectly below Niagara Falls (apart from the water droplets on the filter).

Try using Cling wrap. It works quite well!
