My sister is cabin crew for Tiger, and she has been told that TT have gained slots and are flying to Sydney from July 3.

-ex MEL and ADL later on
-3/4 Daily. Will be increased this summer when more aircraft arrive.
-Everyday low fare of $68

Info and flights appear to be loaded now onto their website

That's fantastic news! I just checked their website also. Any idea when the ADL services are due to start from SYD?

It will be interesting to see JQ's reaction. JQ's Avalon flights to/from ADL and PER were moved to Tullamarine partly due to Tiger's entry on flights to Melbourne from those cities.

At a terminal near you.

But I guess that depends on where I am at the time....;)

Unsurprisingly, operations are from T2. Looks like 4 daily flights except 3 on Saturday.

Craig Murray
2nd April 2009, 09:34 PM
Great point you raise Justin. After all, not ever JQ passenger really wants to end up stranded at Avalon while trying to get to the city of Melbourne!

T2 really is becoming quite a hive of activity these days isn't it?

Is there really space for more operations out of T2 these days?
It looks quite packed every time I'm passing through.

Oliver, can you please read the entire thread before posting a reply to ensure we don't get information repeated. Thankyou -mod

Welcome to Tiger Airways
Sydney Airport has welcomed Tiger Airways’ announcement that it will start flying from Sydney in July 2009.
Tiger Airways Australia will be expanding its network by adding the new Sydney-Melbourne route.
The CEO of Sydney Airport, Russell Balding, said that this is another great win for Sydney. “Sydney is Australia’s biggest tourist attraction and the extra choice Tiger Airways provides will give people from Melbourne an extra reason to visit Sydney. The entry of Tiger Airways into the Sydney market is a real boost for domestic tourism. Sydney Airport is a major contributor to Sydney’s economy and the arrival of Tiger Airways is very good news for all those people employed in Sydney’s tourism, hospitality, and related industries.
“Tiger Airways is also another option for Sydney travellers to consider when they next fly to Melbourne. Sydney Airport congratulates Tiger Airways on its decision to fly from Sydney and looks forward to working closely with Tiger Airways staff as they grow their operations,” Mr Balding said.
Tiger Airways will be flying from the T2 Terminal which has recently been upgraded with a larger food court as well as new carpet, seating and LCD monitors in gate lounges, refurbished bathrooms and extensive concourse re-tiling.

From the Sydney Morning Herald (http://www.smh.com.au/travel/travel-news/lowcost-airline-plans-expansion-to-sydney-20090402-9l6l.html):

Low-cost airline plans expansion to Sydney
Lucy Battersby
April 3, 2009

LOWER air-traffic levels at Sydney airport has given Tiger Airways a chance to operate flights between Melbourne and Sydney, the airline announced last night.

From July 3 the foreign-owned Tiger Airways will fly four times daily along Australia's busiest flight path.

Tiger previously negotiated to use the Sydney Airport terminal, but there was insufficient capacity and the business conditions did not fit with Tiger's low-cost model.

Now, space has opened up as other airlines reduce their flights. "The runways (at Sydney) are less congested now because there is less traffic," Tiger managing director Shelley Roberts said last night.

"We are able to get facilities and there is capacity."

Before it was allowed to use Sydney Airport, Tiger was running flights to nearby Newcastle, but pulled out of that route early last year due to low demand.

"We have seen an overwhelming customer demand for the (Melbourne-Sydney) route and we have managed to find a way to do it that is consistent with our business model," Ms Roberts said.

Tiger opened an office in Adelaide in early March and recently added flights to Perth, Gold Coast and Hobart to its schedules.

A spokesman for Sydney airport said it would release a statement about the arrangement today. Tiger's plans are subject to regulatory approval.

Channel 7s Today Tonight program gave Tiger a real pasting tonight, issues with Tiger changing or cancelling flights. A cheap flight is only cheap if everything goes ok, suffer a Tiger cancellation or re-scheduling and you may as well have paid full price.

So thats how they are doing it. Tiger can't seem to get new A320s quick enough. If they had more of them by now, their third base of Gold Coast could be up and running. They could link up the dots in the network OOL to
Per, Adl, Mel, Hba and even Asp. It would be good for places like Mackay and Rocky to have new flights too

Jarden S
13th April 2009, 01:20 AM
What I believe was the case before when they just started up flying from their first base (MEL) that they were to announce the second base shortly which ADL and OOL were the front runners to be chosen. However they spent 9-12 months before they announced the 2nd base. ADL was chosen as tiger got financial support from the state of SA. At the moment Gold Coast City Council is giving some $12 million a year to support jetstar expansion from OOL so may not have any $$$ left over to attract tiger to base a couple of A320's there. But I hope I am wrong....

TT522 arrived 8 minutes early and i believe the aircraft that operated it was VH-VNG. TT523 then departed on-time. Seems like their off to a good start time wise. On the airport website they had two arrivals(first one TT100) but only one departure. What happened to TT100?

Gerald,

I last saw VNG surrounded by people in hi-vis (probably journos or staff) over at the VIP parking area.

I didn't even read this thread so when the A320 was lining up to land on 34L in the crosswind and was pointing nose on, I didn't know who it was. On the flare, it revealed itself! Totally surprised by this one.

Lukas M

Today's flight was more of a media flight, no pax on board. There was some thing also with the West Tiger's pulling the aircraft, they have just signed a sposorship deal or something with TT..

It seems that first revenue flight is tomorrow afternoon, with a 1450 arrival. Followed by two evening movements later on.

I've had a look at the Tiger Airlines Website and the fares look very good although they only have four flights a day at the moment and the times are at the non-popular times for people to fly.

For my purpose when I fly to Melbourne later this year, I will be using Qantas as their times are more suitable to my needs. But with Tiger the times will probably be suited to the person who does not really care what time they fly

Tiger TT534 VH-VNC from Melbourne was just given a hold overhead TARAL at FL210. Now tracking in over RIVET for a Runway 34 arrival.

QF466 VH-VYJ was also placed into a holding pattern slightly south west of TARAL along with DJ885 VH-VUA and JQ748 VH-VQG.

It seems a seventh A320 will be added to the Tiger fleet and based in Melbourne with services to begin by summer (click here (http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/business/story/0,28124,25755903-23349,00.html)).
