Hi all, this is more a question for the Sydney people but does anyone know if the weekly flight mentioned from the US came in this week. I didn't pick it up yesterday as usual and figured it might be because of the public holiday here.
did anyone else pick it up at all or see it?
thanks in advance.

Nothing on Mode-S yet so it may not come in this week.
I am nr St Marys so I always pick this flight up.

Am going to be a sticky beak here, but what flight is this. Sounds military and obviously Military. But what is it and where does it come from ?
Thanks

14th April 2009, 09:23 PM
Thanks Peter. Didn't think it had.
Mark, its a USAF flight that comes in most weeks, flies Hawaii-Richmond-Alice Springs-Richmond-Brisbane-Hawaii most weeks over three days.
Im pretty sure its bringing in weekly supplies of Ketchup (probably not ketchup but still i can presume) for the americans over at Pine Gap or whatever it is over in Alice Springs near there that the americans run.
Brisbane is the fuel stop before it heads back to Hawaii on the Wednesday.
Thats my understanding anyway.

What type of aircraft is it that usually flies this operation?
Gerard M
15th April 2009, 12:58 PM
well it really depends. The last 8 odd weeks when ive driven past its been a c17 but i also saw regular runs with the kc10 but im guessing it depends on what they are bringing and just whatever aircraft gets assigned.

Has anyone happened to be listening to sydney ATC at the moment and listening to melbourne center and RCH6E1? Just wondering what they were talking about as half of it i couldnt understand because the was a lot of static or something? Something about their decent or something and a visual high speed approach or something, as i have never heard anything like a high speed and overhead approach? It confusing i know but im only getting half of it
Just curious.
Its now holding in a left circuit over Richmond?
And now its just gone to a normal visual 28 approach. strange.

Do they arrive on the same day of each week. ????
Do they come in around the same time on that day ????
Gerard M
28th April 2009, 05:34 PM
Well they are pretty accurate most of the time. They used to be religious coming in at 12pm on the monday but most of this year its been anywhere between 9-1230...1220 yesterday. then it overnights then leaves the same time(give or take) for alice each tuesday and then back and form memory its a 2pm dep on wednesdays. unless of course they go tech, which a kc-10 did a while back was here for a good2-3 weeks...had to bring in the C-5:D with parts etc. But yes usually the same time each week.
might go out tomorrow avo and see it leave.
most of this is from when i listen to atc or PP more recently but i used to go out there and watch it...before i had to go to uni!! haha
and was it anyone here on monday giving me the weird looks!!! lol

Thanks Sarah, we were talking about two different C17s i think. The one that was at Sydney i believe came from NZ...dont quote me on it.
That would make sense about the DHL building though!! ;)
Did anyone get a departure time for the 5Echo1 from Richmond? Actually, has anyone driven past or anything because it is still showing up on PP in the Sydney area i think?

Probaby wont be heading out tomorrow Andrew was out there today. Another C-17 from Chareston i think.
Provinding the Singapore C-130, Rider 18 is still there you should get some shots of it. It left at 12 just before ASY590 came in and subsequently when i was on my way back via Richmond i saw it over near Penrith im guessing Londondarry doing some great airwork. If you hear it go up tomorrow for some work i suggest you take a 20-25min drive down through towards Penrith and stop somewhere on Castlereagh Street near where you turn off to Yarramundi at Springwood road. Saw some great low level ops with its rear end open over there, nearly came off the road myself. i recommend you stop if your going to gawk at it;).

Thanks for the regos Andrew. Actuallly ended up heading back out there this afternoon. Saw Rider18 depart at around 2ish then come back as Rider 28. ASY590 departed south west again. Trojan29 did quite a few touches and go's this afternoon too and then 5E1 arrived back at 5:55pm. Out of interest sake, this is the second time 05-5142 was in on this route. Was one of the better days to be at Richmond.
Great shots Andrew as usual. Not sure if you were there or not. What time did you end up leaving?
Hey tim, depending where you go you can shoot through and above the trees that they planted on the fenceline and if your in the car park opposite you can generally get a pretty good view with no buildings in the way only have to shoot over the top of the fence or if your lucky, through it. But also, up on the balcony near the cafe you can get clear shots over the fence to the runway. By the looks of it Andrew was on the western fence line at the end of the runway. Is that right Andrew?

Two questions, does anyone know why RCH5E1 is only leaving today as it just came up on my PP. Secondly, the mode S that it is using is for 96-0008 - Spirit of the Total Force (http://www.planepictures.net/netshow.php?id=385182) and not the rego that i saw out there on Monday?

Gerard, USAF C17 that came into Richmond on Monday at 0915 was 05-514296 (hexcode AF144C) with callsign RCH5E1. It departed Richmond at 1425 on Wed 24 June again with callsign RCH5E1. Today's C17, also used callsign RCH5E1, was 96.0008 (hexcode AE07F2).

Great photos as usual Andrew. Looks as though you were there just as i was leaving or there abouts. Great to still see the RSAF C130 still there throwing itself around! I was meant to go round the western side but just stayed in the carpark as only just went out to see if it was still there. Won't be able to get out there for the next two weeks but hopefully i should be out there the week after and i'll see if your free then. And i see you added the watermark to prevent any copyright issues in the future;)

Thanks for the rego Noel. No sign of any US c130s in Richmond or any other transport aircraft on friday when i drove out before i left Andrew. Guess they might be there later on during the exercise. Won't be able to check for the next two weeks but if i have my computer on i'll leave PP up to see if it logs anything. (Suprisingly i have internet reception up here on the coast)

13th July 2009, 02:51 PM
Gerard what freqencies can you find them on for arrival and departures? When you see them go over Sydney Airport I never know what freqency to listen to.
Gerard M
13th July 2009, 03:16 PM
Hey Tim, for arrival its some melbourne center frequency which ever one covers arrivals into Syd airspace from the east coast, then approach on 135.9, then tower on 135.5. Departures its reversed tower, approach then melbourne center usually. Will try find what mel center ones that i listen to for their departure, changes depending what leg of their journey they are doing (eg dept to Hickam or dept to Alice etc).
Where abouts over Sydney do you see them coming in? Over the airport? Do you ever get and photos of them?

Coming into Richmond from the east you will hear them on Brisbane center 128.6 mhz... then a Sydney approach or departures freq then Sydney approach (Richmond control zone) 135.9 mhz or 363.8 mhz then tower at Richmond 135.5 mhz or 257.3 mhz...
Departing to the west...Ground and tower at Richmond... Sydney approach (Richmond) 135.9 mhz or 363.8 mhz then Melbourne center 133.5 mhz...

Hi Gerard,
Looks like I was a day early, I was out there yesterday hoping to catch the "Sharkmouth" C-130 take off, and I also missed the C-17 coming in, I was at the other end of the Runway when it did.
There wasn't much movement out there, and these two were probably my best for the day.

Considering some of the recent events I would be extra careful taking pics around bases at the moment. They've pinged some photographers from the Telegraph (although they were inside the base perimeter). Wouldn't be too much of a stretch to go looking for people outside the perimeter.

Have to agree there too. Bit of common sense should be used but i still maintain so long as your not breaking the laws with that article that was posted before then i think you should be ok. Mind you im not going to argue with them! And every time i'm there i see minimum 3 patrols drive past both military police/fire/private security company vehicles. So clearly even before security wasn't an issue for richmond but prepare for an increase im sure!

G'day Everyone.
A bit late I know. I took my son out to Richmond last Friday and by luck saw the USAF C5 depart. From the noise I guess it was an old model not the "super Galaxy". Are these once again going to be regulars to Richmond or just a one off? Pics are not the best but I have attached anyway.

There was also a C-130 tracking north east over Victoria as Redback 37 not the usual King Air looks to heading up to Nowra maybe.
Gerard M
3rd September 2009, 11:16 AM
I just searched the ADS code for Redback 37 which was showing as a C-130 and it came back as A32-437, one of the King Airs. I wonder why it was showing up as a C130?
NickN
3rd September 2009, 11:39 AM
Not sure but I had a feeling it wasn't a C-130.
Noel White
3rd September 2009, 02:25 PM
Nick, that could be caused by the sharer uploading the data to PP may have entered the wrong details in their database for the 3 Army Kingairs.
I think that all the regular sharers would agree that:-
7CF86D = A32-426
7CF86E = A32-437
7CF86F = A32-439
The C130Js have also been sorted but as for the C130Hs, it's a case of anybody's guess.

Am a bit of a 5E1 junky. In a former life (1980's) I got to accompany the crew on one. There used to be two missions a week with the C-141 out of Norton AFB (closed in 1994), which was the then home to the 63 AW (now inactive).
MAC 876 went Norton, Hickam, Pago Pago, Richmond, Woomera, Learmonth, Richmond, Christchurch, Pago Pago, Hickam to Norton. And, MAC 877 which went Norton, Hickam, Pago Pago, Christchurch, Richmond, Alice Springs, Richmond, Pago Pago, Hickam, Norton.
The aircraft would both be on the ground at Richmond at the same time mid missions.:)
Gerard M
14th September 2009, 12:20 PM
I only just remember the 141's. They were a great aircraft, shame they retired them really. I'm all for bringing back the C-5 or the KC-10 to this route permanently. The C-17 has had a good run on it, only fair that they share it around . Mind you its probably to do with whats most economical or their loads etc rather than whos been on it for the longest!

Excellent photo(s).
I can't remember now which specific C-141 it was but it was in the grey and white scheme and had only just been redelivered from being stretched into the lengthened C-141B Model (literally, it was about ten days into service).
The USAF was removing navigators off the aircraft and replacing them with an INS at the time. Our aircraft was INS equipped but we actually had a Nav in the crew who to his chagrin, was demonstrating the INS to us two guest riders! :D
The Norton crews called the flights the "Kiroo trip" - a blend of the words Kiwi / Kangaroo. :)

Yes, ATC took him from MARLN to the SYD VOR, then tracked him on hdg 270 until he was just about abeam Bankstown. They then turned him right onto hdg 360 which they held him to before being cleared to intercept the RWY 28 LLZ.
Seems as if the run is becoming one largely allocated to AMC gained Reserve Wings. Probably a couple of Delta/United/American/Continental etc drivers on a few days off! :D

PP is planeplotter
Mark W
16th November 2009, 12:29 PM
Ah, I think I have narrowed that one down too!
If you find a C-17 that activates on the Friday generally between 1600 and 2300 GMT (so between 0800 and 1500 Californian time or 0300 to 1000 Sydney time) and it has a callsign that is the last digits of its tail ie RCH6163, that usually is the aircraft.
Perhaps AMC could just PM us the schedule! :D
Gerard M
16th November 2009, 12:31 PM
Yep, that sums up what i was looking at, after the info you gave me the other week. And a PM from them would certainly save a lot of time and effort...good luck trying to convince them though ;)

Aloha Gerard,
The 735th AMS at Hickam have a recorded Flight Information Service, which lists services for two days - current day and the next day. Call sometime Sunday and they should have promulgated the movement (by destination, not flight number).
AMC Flight Information (24 hours):

Press 2 for Departures and that will by-pass all of the passenger information details.

Wow, if only international calls were a bit cheaper my flight sim would be looking great with realistic Hickham movements !!! If anyone does call would love a list of the flights other than the weekly Richmond flight.

Todays service was re-routed and operated Hickam AFB Hawaii to Andersen AFB Guam, thence Richmond. He'll be somewhere within the BNE FIR about now I would suspect.
Back to the normal schedule tomorrow, and operates back Wednesday via Pago as usual.

Was an interesting mission this time. As I mentioned above, he came via Guam and when he left Richmond on Wednesday, flew direct to Hickam rather than going via Pago Pago, which is quite unusual - the winds must have been very favourable. I think that may have been an inflight decision...
Usually the callsign terminates at Hickam but not this time - RCH5E1 was then used for the flight from Hickam to Travis after a night stop.
Liveatcf.net actually broadcasts Travis AFB, and was able to listen from contacting approach until handed off to Ground. :D
About an hour later, the aircraft left to go home to March AFB. The crew and ATC used the callsign RCH5142 however, the ACARS download for this sector still displayed the callsign RCH5E1.
