Just checking SBS/acars and looks like we have Cathay (CX135) about to land and Korean (KE125), ANZ (NZ751) also appearing.
Might be some already in and more to come.

Yup,
just picking up ANZ791 CHC-MEL, looks like EK404 is headed to sydney from DXB, as well as Singapore 237 currently both at FL370.
Numerous domestics as well- interesting one i see on radar is JQ473 MEL-NTL has diverted to Hobart.
3 intl acft were held of coast of sydney and are currently descending now- they were AC33 C-FIUF, PBN51 ZK-PBI and an ANZ 320 ZK-OJF (not sure of flt no) assuming this was to facilitate diversions.
Numerous other domestic diversions I havent mentioned as well and on radar seems like Malaysian 149 to MEL might be headed our way too.
Will make for an interesting next little while clearing these guys.
Melbourne ATIS LOW VISIBILITY PROCEDURES IN PROGRESS.
INSTRUMENTED RVR RWY 16 AND 27 NOT AVAILABLE

Phil,
Both aircraft did divert to Sydney. We are suprised in Adelaide that both aircraft didn't come here as both airlines have diverted here in the past.

Adelaide Airport webcam shows an Emirates (777?) and a white 747 (looks to be QF, but can't quite see the tail) at the gate and taxiway respectively. I'm assuming they are both Melbourne diversions also?

B-2500 left around 12:20 Phil, just south of CBR now.
Pretty sure I saw the Emirates 777 (EK406) ex ADL heading for MEL some time ago so don't know how old the webcam is?
Could be a second EK 777 (they get 3 a day from memory)

The 2 QF flights are diverting due to the volcano, there is 10KM plus vis at YMML this morning.

The 2 QF flights are diverting due to the volcano
I read that last night on the Qantas website.
Can someone please explain how the volcano is effecting Qantas flights arriving into Melbourne from the West??
Other carriers are operating, flying in Victorian airspace at 18,000ft.
The MEL-SYD flight path is closer to the volcano, yet that is still open.
Also the United flight between SYD-MEL-SYD is cancelled today.
Perhaps due to fog in Melbourne?
QF94 was diverted to Sydney this morning too it seems.
Cheers

Adam S HI.
The ash to my knowledge is moving west to east around the world as upper winds circulate that way.So the ash has already moved across Sth America over the atlantic across the bottom of South Africa and the Indian ocean and now is affecting Tasmania ,Victoria and NZ.It is coming from the W-SW .So in the next day or 2 it would have circumnavigated the world.

I see, thanks Lloyd. I was thinking the cloud was moving east to west.
I guess that explains why the Sth Africa/Sydney Qantas flights 63/64 have been using a diverted flight path which has been taking them over central Australia (NT).
Cheers for that.

The QF63 has been an ER the last few days due to the ash, and it's causing all sorts of problems, such as cancelled services to EZE and heavily delayed services. The ERs are sparse now with Dallas flights

QF63 has also been calling into PER for fuel.
