KAL 121 is having a go now.

VS has gone to MEL and BA9 is CIVP apparently and all QF CBR flights an 1 MEL flight have been cancelled. Its starting to get light at the airport and vis. is still bad but not as bad as 5am.

9V-SKH is apparently opperating SQ221 this morning.

Four or five a/c have landed in the last 20 mins but the fog seems to be rolling in more so I expect closure any time soon.

Conditions are terrible out there right now - this one looks like it will hang around until well after 9am at this stage.

All Qantas domestic arrivals have been delayed till after 9:15am and onwards.

Sarah C

Believe it or not it looks like it is clearing a bit. A QF 747 just landed.

In the last 10 minutes, the fog has really cleared considerably. A QF 767 jsut took of 16L and you can actually see blue sky above us.

Tim Bowrey
4th June 2009, 08:32 AM
Looks clear as now.

Sarah, please refrain from quoting the whole previous post in your message. Thank you - mod

Yep - it is amazing how much it has cleared. You can see all the runways and visibility is good. Now it is just a case of organising aircraft to arrive.

Even in fog, the airport doesn't 'close'.

Youll be pleased to know it is SKH Tim and its currently at FL292 coming back to sydney with QFA6D not far ahead. Theyve probs got good 45 mins left before they arrive.

Thai 993, Cathay 111, Virgin 201, Etihad 450 all still on ground at Melb per my radar so their 10 am etas looking very unlikely.

QF128 VH-OEC and N36GV approaching Sydney, JAL 771 JA711J as well approaching.

QF108 vh-oeb departed BNE not long ago for syd, as did QF82 adelaide sydney. Also Picking up a JQ811 sydney Christchurch tracking back down to sydney- not sure if this one could be radar error like QF82 ....

Matt,

QF 82 is not an error. Acually it is a scheduled flight every Thursday, Saturday and Monday. The aircraft arrives in Adelaide from Singapore an then goes onto sydney.

I ride to work and my path takes me under the YMML rwy 34 right turn to final. Suffice to say it was a conga line on Bolte arrivals, much heavier than normal. My understanding is that generally the tower cancells STAR and vectors a shortened base before a right turn onto finals. Definately not today.

Yeah mate,

but very unusual that itd go to BNE with such a short flight from ADL it would have recieved forecasts of fog even before departure.

Going to BNE doesnt help its cause.

JQ811 is a new early morning Jetstar flight that operates from Brisbane to Sydney. It started about 2 weeks ago, JQ810 SYD/BNE 0620/0755, JQ811 BNE/SYD 0825/1000.

VH-VWX was operating this flight M-F last week.

I was on DJ810 this morning to Melb. We left around 20-30 mins late... Was interesting watching the DJ in front of us 'dissapear' whilst thundering down 16R!

When we got into MELB, there was a lot of traffic there, all from SYD?! Interesting all the same...

I saw a great shot of a plane coming into Sydney with a complete whiteout underneath! The fog/mist is starting to roll in through the Hills district at the moment. It was getting reallll thick through Kurrajong and Richmond on my way through at around 5.

Whats it like at Sydney at the moment? The atis says: Visibility: 10KM IN HAZE

Nigel C
4th June 2009, 08:26 PM
It's been saying 10k in haze for a fair bit of the day.

The forecast for the airport tomorrow says only a 10% chance of fog in the morning from 0200-0900 if there are significant breaks in the cloud overnight.

I travelled up to SYD this morning on a QF A333 scheduled to depart at 0930 but wasn't cleared to pushback until 1005. Taxied to rwy 34 and along the way we saw the VS A346 sitting stationary at the end of rwy 09 (east-end) as if it had either just landed on 09 or used it as a taxi route off 34, and in front of that waiting for us to pass was a QF 744.

Then we saw all of the diverted heavies (as mentioned by others above) parked all along the taxiway leading down toward the maintenance area (at least 4 or 5) and around Tiger and Freight terminals (a further 2 or 3).

Very congested at MEL - but made for some interesting viewing!

I thought something was going on when I heard BA009 heading into SYD about 9.30-10ish. if only it wasn't cloudy - it's been a long time since I've seen a BA747 go over here.

Arriving into Mel this evening at 20:45 on DJ8 something (i forget the flight number), there was BA 777 and Virgin Atlantic A340 parked up in Tiger / freight area - crew must have run out of hours to return to Syd
Virgin 19:15 departure was still on time (almost) so obviously by this evening most of the knock on delays had been caught up / flights cancelled to get things back to schedule.

Looking out from my apartment in St Leonards towards the City now, all I can see is the flashing beacon on top of Centrepoint tower..... Does not look well for tomorrow morning I have to say.

Unfortunately I am travelling tomorrow as well, I guess I just have to be prepared for dealys.

Not sure i understand the wind section but from what i can gather your pretty spot on the mark there Lee. I'm guessing low vis procedures are high intensity lighting or whatever its called? And cloud, few at 001, is that 100ft or 1000ft?
Like you said Ricky, should be interesting tomorrow morning. Think i'll just sleep in instead, wait for it all to cook off ;)

2:02AM Vis is definately improving. In the last 20 minutes it's gone from 500M to probably 1500M. There still may be some late arrivals this morning but it may not be as bad as yesterday.

Nigel C
5th June 2009, 05:31 AM
We're now out of Low Vis procedures as of 0515; night shift said it began at 2330 last night. We have been told it may still reform, so we're not out of the woods just yet!

Mick, my reported forecast was from the 1645 airport issue. The met bureau normally gives an updated forecast at around 2130-2145 by which time I was well and truly asleep. It looks like we got that 10% chance;)

Gerard, 100' is correct. The wind section says it's blowing from 340 degrees at 7 knots, which gives 7 knots of tailwind for a 16R departure or arrival (medical priority or emergency during curfew period)

EDIT: We're preparing to go back into Low Vis procedures at 0606

EDIT the EDIT: Low vis off again 0638.

Hi everyone,

I may have heard the ATC Coms incorrectly but it sounds as though SQ235 is heading to the Gold Coast?

Is this possible for a 777?

Cheers,

Dave

Fantastic, thanks for that.

Shame about the loss of the 777.

Anyhoo do we know where QF from LAX, Korean, Japan and Emirates have ended up?

Slightly off topic but looking out the window now it is strange to see an Asiana 747 in place of the regular 777:

BNE International diversions were

VA8 from LAX (VH-VPE) and QF52 from SIN (VH-QPE) both went to CNS
SQ235 from SIN (9V-STA) went to OOL
EK434 from DXB (A6-ERA) went to SYD

a number of morning arrivals were also considerably late but as far as I'm aware the only divertions were the ones above.
