This is the second time I've pondered this today - Great Circle Mapper shows that the shortest path MLE-SYD is well above PER - Do these flights actually head down and near PER and then go east? (Presumably due to winds?)

http://gc.kls2.com/cgi-bin/gc?PATH=MLE-SYD,+PER&RANGE=&PATH-COLOR=&PATH-UNITS=mi&PATH-MINIMUM=&SPEED-GROUND=&SPEED-UNITS=kts&RANGE-STYLE=best&RANGE-COLOR=&MAP-STYLE=

chrisb - I think that question might have been asked before, and it might have had something to do with requirements for fuel.

Chris,

This one passed directly o/head YPPH at FL430. Nice contrail too! Right on dusk here in PER and was 5 mins behind the EK flight tracking DXB/MEL.
