While I was tracking in from Prospect to Bankstown this morning, one of the Bankstown Airport vehicles requested clearance to enter Runway 29R to remove some debris. They were very quickly clear of the runway again and reported to the tower that they had picked up an oil dip stick from the runway. They also mentioned that the aircraft registration was on the dip stick, so hopefully they can contact the aircraft and advise them of the situation.

On many light aircraft, the top of the dip stick is very close to the engine cowl, so I doubt whether it is possible for the dip stick to actually come out completely (there are obviously some).

I have not heard of debris on the runway before at Bankstown, however I guess there are plenty of parts that can potentially fall from the aircraft.

When I read the title of this thread I thought it was going to be about Nigel driving his safety car on the runway at YSSY or something...natural assumption really!

Greetings from Gay Paris! ;)

Same here, i read the title and thought it was some moron on the runway but turned out to be something completly different. Well if someone out there has lost a dip stick you know where to find it;)

Gee Andrew, what a drag having to be in Paris . Surely the weather is better than the cold here!!

Surely it was a fuel dip stick, not an oil dip stick?

I just assumed oil dip stick, but maybe a fuel dip stick left on the wing during pre-flight checks.

That's what I would think.....not many oil dipsticks have the reg on them! Most fuel dipsticks have it written on them to ensure the dipstick matches the aircraft!

I too was inbound from Prospect yesterday and heard a similar message about a dip stick on the runway. The tower mentioned "a dip stick of the oil variety".
