I was out at Coonabarabran/Warrumbungles last week and you see plenty of contrails up there. Heaps of plane cross the sky, but why? Where are they coming from and where are they going? In comparison, when I got to Lightening Ridge, I hardly saw any planes. In any case, it makes for a decent sight.

Both Lightening Ridge and Coonabarabran are just of a track between the waypoints CORKY and ONIVI, so you should see contrails in both locations. Might just be a weather and timing thing as to how many contrails you see.

There are many possible routes. Some include:
..Singapore-Sydney when using the more northern route via SCO, CORKY
..Sydney to Hong Kong, China etc which often route via Narrabri.
..Traffic via Walgett to Darwin etc
..Brisbane Melb traffic via the Q94 tracks somehwere just east of Coonabarabran.

Nice pictures there Howie.
Are the any maps online which show these waypoints/tracking paths across Australia?
I find this subject quite interesting being both a bit of a 'mapping buff', and an 'aviation enthusiast'.

Not online as far as I know.
They are available to buy from air services and other pilot resource online shops
http://www.airservices.gov.au/store/avcharts.asp
They are republished every 6 months so there should be quite a few out of date versions around the traps.
Navigraph (for flight sim, not real life, but still very good) may suit your needs. Their charts are much cheaper at something like 10 charts for 10euro

I find it interesting because I love country road trips and bushwalks and to then see planes out there makes it complete. Makes for a good holiday, really
