Airport passenger numbers to double

PASSENGER numbers at Launceston Airport have been predicted to double within 20 years - encouraging a raft of development proposals in a new airport master plan.
A new low-cost motel on airport land is one idea being considered as a way of generating more revenue for the facility.

The report said that total traffic levels in 2007-2008 reached in excess of one million passengers and 9000 domestic passenger aircraft movements - an increase of almost 65 per cent in the past five years.

Forecasts show that in this financial year, passenger numbers are most likely to reach 1.28 million, rising to 1.5 million by 2015 and 2.3 million by 2027.

Total aircraft movements are forecast to grow from 17,100 last year to between 19,300 and 24,600 by 2027.

The master plan, which is available for public input until October 23, also involves new gate lounges, upgrades to arrivals baggage delivery and carousels, expanded check-in, more checked bag screening facilities, expanded public lounge and retail facilities on the ground level, retail facilities on the apron level and upgrades to the first floor bar area to potentially provide office space.

External changes mooted include the relocation of the Tasmanian Aero Club to hangar 17 or a new area south of the Royal Flying Doctors Service and other hanger improvements.

The new master plan builds on the $22 million spent in recent years on upgrades including increased car parking spaces from 380 to 1500 spaces, conversion to a common user terminal layout that includes mandatory checked bag screening facilities, new departures, arrivals and gate lounges and electronic bag collection areas.

Under the Commonwealth Airports Act, the airport must update its master plan every five years and any work must be approved by the Federal Government before it can go ahead.

Launceston Airport general manager Pamela Graham said: "Its purpose is to provide certainty for the airport's neighbours, the tourism industry, business community and all levels of government."
