Air New Zealand increases Sydney to Queenstown direct to five times a week for ski season

Air New Zealand’s popular direct service from Sydney to Queenstown will increase to five times per week over the peak period this winter.
The five times per week service will operate during July and August on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, four times a week through September and twice a week through October.

This will complement twice weekly Melbourne and Brisbane to Queenstown direct flights.
In total, nine Air New Zealand flights a week with more than 1300 available seats will be making their way to the region.

“Interest from Australians in coming to Queenstown continues to strengthen and we’re very pleased by early bookings onto the additional services,” says Air New Zealand General Manager Tasman/Pacific Airline, Glen Sowry.

“By providing visitors with a greater selection of flights across the week we are also releasing some of the pressure Queenstown Airport has been under particularly on Saturdays.”
Direct Sydney-Queenstown services outside of the ski season are currently operating on Tuesdays and Saturdays departing at 10.00 am and arriving at 2.55 pm.

The weekly Melbourne-Queenstown direct service currently departs on Saturdays at 6.40 am arriving in Queenstown at 11.55 am.

About time Queenstown got better services, but it is still long overdue that a carrier like Jetstar or Pacific Blue commence flights into Queenstown. They could so easily undercut the competition - it is a rip-off route.

An increase in trans-Tasman flights should bring more Australians to NZ

14 weekly direct trans-Tasman flights between Queenstown New Zealand and Australia’s East Coast have been scheduled this winter.
Air New Zealand is to operate nine of the direct flights following a recent announcement of five direct Sydney to Queenstown flights – up from three last year.

An additional Melbourne to Queenstown flight on Wednesday is scheduled alongside the existing Saturday flight. This schedule complements an existing two flights from Brisbane.
Qantas will operate the remaining five direct flights across the Tasman with three flights from Sydney, one from Melbourne and one from Brisbane.

Destination Queenstown CEO David Kennedy said the extra capacity was vital to strengthening Queenstown’s winter appeal.

“The more direct flights – the easier it is for Aussies to come across for a winter holiday. You can fly out in the morning, and be skiing or relaxing the same afternoon. It’s easier than a commute to the Australian skifields, and Queenstown is an unbeatable lake and alpine destination with plenty of activities on and off the mountain as well as fantastic apres-ski.”

Mr Kennedy is delighted with Air New Zealand’s commitment to increase that total daily direct flights from 11 last year to 14 this year.

“It shows the company’s commitment to our region and recognises Queenstown as a fantastic winter holiday destination.

“Queenstown’s setting is unique in Australasia, six ski fields within easy reach and all the facilities of a sophisticated and cosmopolitan four season resort. On mountain facilities are of world standard with significant improvements in place for this year including a huge investment into snowmaking.”

Mr Kennedy said the recent first snowfall of the season has added to the atmosphere around town. “It’s a reminder that winter is just around the corner.”
