Today's QF419 Sydney to Melbourne flight was operated by B747 VH-OJI.

Is it known why Qantas have used this jumbo on a domestic flight?
A repositioning move? High passenger demand? Roll-on effect from yesterday's dust storms?

Will be interesting to see if this a/c works the return flight, QF428 back to Sydney.

I am not sure of the reason, but I remember flying on a B747 last year MEL-SYD when there had been a day of delays and cancellations ex MEL and QF flew a B747 down to uplift pax who had been delayed, so could be a similar situation.

Cheers

According to the QF website QF428 is operated today by a B744.

I was at airport and can tell you OJI sure got up early- not far past Novotel Cronulla off 34L looking from the tower/mound.

Will upload some pics in this thread soon

Are any of the domestic gates at T1 at MEL A380 capable?

Nope. Unless they upgraded gate 23, but I don't see why they would

B747's have also been known to do Syd-Melb on Grand Prix weekends as well :)

VH-OJS worked QF557 & QF566 today between Sydney and Perth.
Any known reason for today's equipment change?

Not sure about why they have changed it but my cousins were on the flight and were very happy about getting a Intl config aircraft on the sector, also said it was a very bumpy departure out of SYD

Would have thought maybe Grand Final demand, maybe lots of people flying out of SYD due lack of seats out of MEL?

not 100% sure, but a 332 operated some SYD-MEL flights yesterday replacing a 763 on some flights. Maybe a 763 went u/s, and the Perth 332 was used as a replacement?

Maybe the 332 that was used for the AFL Grand Final flyover was then used on the scheduled MEL-SYD runs that day in lieu of a 767 seeing as they had the aircraft there already?
