Driving from Las Vegas to Los Angeles in a few days.

Is it worth the side trip to the plane cemetry?
Directions?
Can we get in?
Hospitable or hostile?

Any advice, please

Hi Michael, we flew in last week so I can't tell you much about entry etc. however the array of aircraft there was amazing.

Other than the four Qantas aircraft there were BA 747s, CX 747s, a lot of retired UA 737s, DL 727s, FedEx DC-10s and Midwest 717s. Delta is also bringing NW aircraft in for repaints. Wish we had more time there!

Hi Michael,
Did the drive Vegas to Palmdale about 2 weeks ago now.
The airport is only about a 5min drive off the highway to LA. Did not stay lond as the light was fading very fast.(was getting dark at 16:30pm)
I only managed to drive around the eastern part of the airport, on a small single lane road up too the security gate of the military controlled gate. (I saw the authorised vehicles only sign, & turned around)

Saw a few aircraft but all through the fence. You mainly just see the top half's of the aircraft.
After that I drove down the main road that goes through the airport. You can get up nice and close to some of the aircraft park on the ramp, if you drive into the carparks of the contractors. But again all through fences. I just shot pics from the car, as there were workers around, getting into their cars and heading home. But I managed to get some shots of the QF aircraft parked there, before the light was too dark, so it was worth the detour.

I've been doing a bit of research about the boneyards as well, and based on threads on other forums, your best bet with Victorville is to approach a local flying club and arrange to hire an aircraft and pilot and see if it's possible to do a couple of TNGs or full-stops with a slow taxi back past all the aircraft. I haven't actually looked any further into this (yet) so I don't know whether light aircraft would be given permission to land at VCV, but it's definitely worth a shot.

hostile in certain parts, take Adelanto Rd and drive a few miles until you come across a mound on the left side, that's the easiest spot at ground level.
