It's really quite sad...these are truly the workhorses of the Qantas fleet

Just a quick question. When these aircraft leave , are they stripped of all internal fittings eg seats, galleys etc. Do any ever operate as revenue earning flights to a point in the US such as LAX or SFO even HNL ?

David, a couple of 744s that have been retired (OEC and OED) both operated to LAX as revenue services before a tag-leg out to VCV. As the 767s can't operate transpacific to LAX or SFO nonstop in normal operations, they obviously can't operate a revenue service, let alone the restriction of the on-board product. I suspect the 767s are carrying ferry tanks in place of seats on these services -- the SYD-VCV has lately been operated non-stop. When the 747 Classics were retired, which have a slightly greater range than the 767s, they had a tech stop in HNL. From memory, the 762s also had this HNL stop even though they too can outlast the 763 range-wise.

They would fly from SYD-HNL then to victorville. No ferry tanks as they have the range to fly those distances. The only type i know to have ever had ferry tanks were the 737-200 & DC9.Some
F27 also had ferry tanks when they were flown to the states via the pacific route. The longest leg for them is from HNL -LAX

As they are empty they fly non stop to VCV from SYD.

Ray,

I saw the flight plan on the one flown by AJ to KVCV last year - definately no stops ... direct all the way.

Being 338 ER 767 they would make it.A very long flight for the crew.

VH-OGA and VH-OGD had flight times over 14 hours.

Was the outbound flight an extra one to the normal schedule, or otherwise how did QF account for the inbound flight?

It had a seperate ferry flight number. They operated SYD/LAX (QF11), and then later in the day flew the very short sector to VCV. On both occasions from memory, the QF12 that night wasn't in the system.

if I am not mistaken, Victor will follow Charlie

You mean -OGV is apparently headed over? That's really surprising -- it's the youngest 767 in the fleet, built in 2000 from memory. As QF are going to need to hang onto at least some frames for a few years until the 787s arrive, you'd have to think the GE aircraft from the first order would go.

If you read the third post of the thread it says OGB leaves in a couple of weeks. So I think OGb is next in line.

You are correct. OGV was 2000. You would probably expect the all the ex British Airways ones to go before anything newer than OGI if they go on a age basis. The British Airways ones are 1990-91 builds with the exception of ZXG which is built in 1992.

Evening all,

Sorry to drag this topic back up. However It has been reported on Airliners.net that 1 of the VH-ZX aircraft will be reitred and head to the desert in December. Not sure which rego or what date. See the link below....

All 7 of the RR engine ZX fleet will be retired over the next 12 months.

This will leave QF with a fleet of 16 refurbished GE B763s.

Hey guys,

A couple questions. Firstly when did QF take ownership of these aircraft? There original leases were rather long went they?

Secondly, when an aircraft is sent to the desert does the airline sell the aircraft to a company or does the airline retain ownership of it? If they sell it what does an aircraft go for? Seeing as though this thread is about 767's let's just discuss prices for them.

Cheers

They came in the year 2000 for a seven year lease. The lease was extended for another seven years in 2007.:D

So, they are still leased, not owned by QF?

They're still leased? Not what I thought at all!

So if they are still leased, and QF no longer requires them and they are returning them (or some of them) earlier, does that mean its BAs decision to send them to the desert?

Sorry lots of questions

Cheers

All 7 are owned, originally leased.

BA didn't require them back after the initial lease so QF purchased the aircraft.

Probably a silly question, but is there a chance QF would send a 767 to longreach? They and the 738 have been the back bone and work horses of the domestic fleet.
Or is longreach more interested in milestone aircraft ie 707 & 747

I hope so. Went there last year & what a hidden gem it is or could be for Qantas . I get the impression that they never/rarely promote their museum . At Sydney their is a token effort at a "museum".Maybe the modern corporate types do not want to promote the real Qantas thru its history, the icon it once was to Australia.
