View Full Version : Runway Allocation...

Morning all,

Following on from Andrew Norris "YSSY Bay Allocations (http://yssyforum.net/board/showthread.php?t=433)" thread, can I ask a question...

All things being fair with regards to weather conditions (almost still with regards to wind and direction, and there is no rain etc... (as this is a 'perfect' which we do NOT have in Syd... :p)), is there a 'preferred' arrival/departure direction for Sydney, or any other airport for that matter? I would suspect that, for the really early morning arrivals, it would be a 34L/R arrivals, but what happens after the curfew is lifted??

Thoughts/comments appreciated, and have a great day!

That's a loaded question with respect to Sydney. Your best bet is to read this:

http://www.airservicesaustralia.com/reports/sydney/200803.pdf

It gives you a basic look at the Long Term Operating Plan (LTOP), aka. noise sharing.

It also gives you an idea of what runways are used when.

To cut a long story short though: parallels in the morning peak (about 7-11am) and evening peak, and some form of crossing mode at other times, and then curfew at curfew time.

Makes an interesting read though.

Hey Phil,

Thanks for this, and you're right, it DOES make for an interesting read!

And sorry, for the "loaded" question... :o

Just for interest Mode 5 seemed to be in use just after midday today when I dashed to Canberra on QF1477

The preferred mode in Sydney, outside Curfew hours, is SODPROPS (page 3 of the link previously mentioned, second block in the table shows the mode, page 4 shows the priorities for selection)
Wind obviously affects this (less than 5 kt DW in both the 16 & 34 direction) and it's a lower capacity mode so traffic demand may well force alternative choices. Generally between 0700 & 1100 Local & for a period in the afternoon traffic demand dictates parallel runway ops, 34 gives higher capacities than 16 if all other things are equal.
The Long Term Operating Plan for Sydney Airport (LTOP) is the driving document.
