Friday, May 7, 2010
A plane bound for San Francisco has turned back for Sydney after reportedly experiencing problems during take off.

The United Airlines flight took off just before 2:45pm ASET on Friday but returned 90 minutes later for maintenance checks.

The airline says all 220 passengers onboard have been provided with hotel accommodation and will be put on flights on Saturday.

A United spokeswoman would not confirm media reports that the Boeing 747-400 clipped its tail during takeoff.

"I can confirm that UA870 departed from Sydney at 2:45pm for San Francisco today and has returned to Sydney Airport for maintenance checks," she said.

"It landed without incident at 4:20pm. We've got no further information at this time."

Sydney Airport confirmed the plane had been forced to turn back but could not comment on the reason.
