I noticed this morning from around 10:15 to at least 11:30 that planes on departure were flying almost overhead. I have lived in this house at Hurstville for 20+ years and have never planes flying this route before. On looking at Webtrack I noticed that after takeoff from 16R planes were making a sharp right hand turn to the west as soon as they were airborn. It almost looked as they were trying to avoid flying over Kurnell/ Cronulla.
Would anyone have an explanation - a new departure route, problems with 16R, etc?
Mind you I am not complaining, in fact it was great, I just hope it is a regular route in the future.:)

99% of the time, aircraft are diverted off their usual SID due to weather, so are given an assignned heading on takeoff. Usually, off 16R, they are assigned heading 170 and depart to the south, but there was significant weather around Cronulla and Bate Bay at the time, resulting in the departures to the south-west

Thanks Jason, that explains the strange flight paths.
