MEL-LST and ADL-HBA get the chop from August. Tiger is now the third airline to pull out of the ADL-HBA route with neither DJ or JQ making it profitable.

Tiger cuts Tassie flights THE MERCURY | July 16, 2010 02.58pm
TIGER Airways has axed flights on key Tasmanian routes out of Hobart and Launceston from August.
Tiger today confirmed that the Hobart-Adelaide and Launceston-Melbourne routes would be be suspended from August 2.
Tiger customers who have booked flights after August 2 were informed today that the flights had been cancelled and the services suspended until further notice.
The emails stated that fares would be refunded.
Steve Burns, Commercial Director, Tiger Airways Australia says “It’s a commercial reality that Tiger Airways will operate on routes that are most profitable. With these changes we’re simply responding to demand and adapting our network to reduce our costs and satisfy customer demand.”
Meanwhile, Jetstar announced it was looking at expanding its services between Launceston and Melbourne and offered a $50 travel voucher for Launceston passengers who had had their Tiger flights cancelled after August 2.
I wonder if DJ will resume HBA-ADL with E-jets now that TT is gone. Nyrstar and Hydro Tasmania are two large companies with major bases in both Hobart and Adelaide (Port Pirie for Nyrstar), so it should be possible to drive some good yield from the route if timed correctly. I would have thought that JQ would increase HBA-MEL before LST-MEL given that HBA-MEL has consistently higher load factors despite the higher fares charged. Possibly something to do with the proposed increased landing fees at HBA which are now scheduled to be agreed upon by September, having originally been scheduled to have been agreed upon by June. If JQ added an additional LST flight then LST would end up with more JQ seats than HBA, given that they get a daily LST-BNE while HBA-BNE gets nothing. Same as all through the '90's where LST-SYD always had more seats than HBA-SYD despite HBA being the stronger port. Maybe TT could try HBA-OOL or HBA-BNE instead of the HBA-ADL?
