View Full Version : Qantas 90th Anniversary Celebrations

Hi All,

I only just realised that it's Qantas' 90th anniversary this year and through some digging online have found some references to celebrations being held at Sydney and Brisbane this month.

Even the QF Ambassador, John Travolta is expected to come down with his 707. Not sure if this is common knowledge or not, but thought I'd share.

http://www.etravelblackboard.com/article/110786/qantas-celebrate-90th-anniversary-with-travolta

Are events like these open to the public or just Qantas staff? I've checked the Qantas site and here among others for info and haven't turned up much - maybe I haven't delved deep enough.

Anyone have info on the 707's arrival etc..?

Cheers!

Dan

I didnt know Justin Timberlake had a 707.

Does anyone know where the flights will go? It will be awesome to have a few 707 movements here again!

Travolta will visit Brisbane Airport for a similar open-day event, before venturing to Perth in aid of a special telethon hosted by Qantas

The scenic flight is to take place on the Monday or the Tuesday after the BNE & SYD open days.
I'll also mention that there is to be an open day in MEL on the 13NOV.

I'll be at the SYD and BNE events wearing this shirt: http://yfrog.com/63pnpj

(I thought my new Air NZ Rico shirt wouldn't impress QF ;))

If you're on Twitter use the hashtag #QFbday about these events.

I too have heard about the MEL event but can't go, even though I live in MEL!

got my ticket also, allowed us to invite one other person as well. (know our Qantas rep quite well) so was invited.

Do we know what aircraft will be on display other than the 707 and possible 744, 380?

After today's event......there won't be one, but 6 A380s on display!

No 744 or 333 on display as Qantas need these aircraft in service to compensate for the A380s being grounded.

The 707 and Connie will also be put to revenue-use to to compensate for the above mentioned 744 and 333 being taken off their regular services as well as having the engines strapped back onto Nalanji Dreaming to get it back in service until the A380s are cleared to re-enter traffic!!

A380 VH-OQC Paul McGuiness
Dash 8-Q400 VH-QOW
JT's 707
HARS's Lockheed Super Constellation VH-EAG
Royal Flying Doctors Service King Air B200

Queues for A380 were approx 2 hours long, B767 and A330 were around 40 minutes, Constellation was around 30 minutes (I think) but they had to leave at around 1530

Can't believe more people weren't at the ports lookout - it was very close as it went past. This caught me out yesterday when I wanted to get a shot of the Connie leaving. The beach was PERFECT with the short burst of sunlight had -EAG taken 16R! Ah well, planes don't fly solely for photographers :D

Silly question, though is there any way of finding out in advance what runway an aircraft is going to depart/arrive on? I assume this gets given when the aircraft contact ATC for Airways Clearence while they're still on the ground?

Maikha if you listen to Clearance and ground you can determine what runways for takeoff and any approach frequency will constantly repeat what runway aircraft are arriving on (eg 124.4, 125.3, 128.3 and 126.1) or even 128.6 for aircraft coming from the east.

Awesome shots Chris.

also what are they for?

Peter Agatsiotis
7th November 2010, 06:05 PM
very observant Radi, only just noticed when checking the great photos.

Seen hundreds of 707's in my time and never took much notice of the engines, just rego's (up to 30-40 a day at Heathrow in the 60's)

Peter Agatsiotis

Me again. just checked my limited stock of 707's and seems to be standard.
No. 1 engine not visible on all shots but a definite on this one:

I forget the term for them but they're for pressurisation and only 3 were required.

Some airlines 707's only had them on engines 2 and 3, eg American Airlines

Some more shots to share which I and a couple of my friends took while I was hosting on the A380... Great day, huge interest in the big bird with some waiting a couple of hours in the queue, and overall a high turnout considering the dismal weather at the start and end of the day... :)

Radi & Jack, I came across this in a search about the engine mounts.

The 707's used engine-driven turbocompressors to supply high-pressure air for pressurization. The engines could not supply sufficient bleed air for this purpose without a serious loss of thrust. On many commercial 707s the outer port (#1) engine mount is distinctly different from the other three, as this is the only engine not fitted with a turbocompressor. With engines 2 through 4 being fitted with TCs, they provide the triple redundancy required of the aircraft's cabin pressurisation and air-conditioning system.

It is currently all locked up at Qantas West maintenance area.+

On another note, I wonder how this got through with the Fed Govt's 'ban' on noisy jets at Sydney now in force? Was the 34R departure at the special request of Mr Albanese so his electorate didn't know it had even visited?
