I captured this brief but awesome shot of an aircraft flying high above Sydney during the Ashes test. It looks like it is at quite a height.

I thought you guys might enjoy it also, and maybe try and guess its airline/aircraft type.

Apologies if I have posted this in the wrong forum.

Take care.

Almost 100% say a SQ 77W heading to NZ. Even the cameramen must think the cricket is boring to be looking up in the sky!

Daniel,

I would put my money on a B777, not Qantas because there does not appear to be any red underneath the tail. Not Air New Zealand because it has an all white underbelly, so I would go for Signapore Airlines, as there appears to be a stripe along the window line. Maybe Singapore-Auckland/Christchurch direct (or return).

Looks like an SQ 777 - the yellow at the bottom of the tail is the only thing I can see that will give it away and they do fly over the area to get to NZ directly.

Good on the cameraman :D

Thought I'd throw one in...MAS130 AKL-KUL.

Malaysia has a grey underbelly, this one looks more like white to me.

Daniel, do you have a date and time for the video clip ?

I agree with tim. Pretty sure it is SQ 285 to AKL as it is definately a 773.

...date and time for the video clip ?
Looking at the scorecard, i'd estimate around 3.00pm Thurs 6/1

If the clip is from around 3pm on Thursday the 6th January 2011 then the overfly would be ....

9V-SWO SQ0286 06/01/2011 14:35 Singapore Airlines B777-312(ER) Auckland-Singapore

SQ0285 is the morning flight, a bit early for the cricket.

9V-SWO SQ0285 06/01/2011 08:11 Singapore Airlines B777-312(ER) Singapore-Auckland

A little earlier in the afternoon we had ...

9V-SQI SQ0298 06/01/2011 13:32 Singapore Airlines B777-212(ER) Christchurch-Singapore

But it's not a 773

Yeah. Before tea on 6 Jan. So SIA286 9V-SWO AKL-SIN B77W for mine...

Awesome that you would work that out! And ironic since I'm booked to fly on SQ286 in a few weeks time.

I have flown that route before also and enjoyed the view of Sydney from that height.

I'm keen to know which ATC zones that flight would go through between AKL and SIN. Should I ask that here or somewhere else?

Cheers.

Well, that depends on what tracks they are flying on the day. MAS130 for instance has tracked over BNE today, not Syd. Presume SIA286 would be same.

Anyway, roughly you could have AKL ATC, NZ FIR, AKL Oceanic FIR, BNE Oceanic, & after that I'm lost :). Please note this is only a guess & is well open for correction!

When the flight is flying above Sydney, they are usually in contact with Melbourne Centre 133.5, before that is with Brisbane Centre 128.6 and before that Brisbane Oceanic HF I think.
