why this CBR-MEL flight is on the YMML website like this.

20/1 QF QF853 CANBERRA SALE VI 14:35 17:30

I assume it's medical, it does seem an interesting diversion. It's not weather in YMML. So I say!

Kind regards,

Geoff

I'm at Canberra airport currently and we have recently had two diversions from Melbourne; QF439 (VH-OGN, which is about to roll for Melbourne) and an unknown DJ flight operated by VH-VUK which left about 10 minutes ago. Qantas flights 818/819 have been cancelled due to 'Melbourne weather'

QF 853 left rather late and was operated by VH-TJO (if I have the right flight, it could have been TJM)

Single runway ops up to 30 min holding time from now till March due runway works if your one of the unlucky ones.

Winds? Apparently OGN did a go around and then decided to divert to Canberra before taking on fuel as well as extra pax. The reason for the cancellation of QF819 was "Severe Melbourne Weather"

I find this really strange!

It has been a great day in YMML.

Why would the aircraft you mention Zac go and refuel in CBR AND pick up extra pax?

Were there 20 extra pax hanging around CBR airport awaiting a/any plane to arrive?

Dont think this is how it works.

I dont believe in general YMML may have such a good day ops wise with some delays from other ports, however I do find it hard to justify your thoughts.

Kind regards,

Geoff

It's all very strange, maybe there was a medical emergency and qantas diverted 439 to pick up pax from the cancelled flight, although I highly doubt that would happen, either way, the facts don't lye:

Zac,

Unsure of which facts you refer to!

The link you provided does not make huge difference if you look at today, yesterday or the day before.

If our (Australian) airports cannot operate under conditions like today in YMML, we have no hope!

Think we should agree to disagree.

Take care.

Kind regards,

Geoff

Had nothing to do with WIND!
Mel has a sea breeze that comes in about 3pm each day, hardly go around stuff for aircrew to worry about, a change of runway thats all but not a diversion to CBR!

No, no, that's what I mean by the fact don't lie, the weather was perfect, I have no idea what this severe weather is! It all seems very strange, and Brian, if you doubt QF439 diverted to Canberra then explain why I have pictures of VH-OGN in Canberra this afternoon.

Sorry I missed this part of the post. The extra pax were passengers with connections from the cancelled QF819 service as well as the cabin crew from the QF819.

To be honest I have no idea what happened with regards to this, there were a few pax going on and a cabin crew so I have assumed the above, it seemed to take on a lot of fuel in Canberra as well.

I am not doubting that the weather in Melbourne was fine, the BOM backs that up, I just find it interesting that Qantas gave the reason they did for the cancellation of one flight and also why Canberra had two diversions when all appeared fine. The single runway ops could be a valid reason but surely they would take extra fuel to compensate in the first place.

For those that don't know by now: Turns out it does have something to do with wind... well wind shear! This from www.heraldsun.com.au. :)

Melbourne Airport operating just one runway as cross winds cause havoc (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/melbourne-airport-operating-just-one-runway-as-cross-winds-cause-havoc/story-e6frf7kx-1225991853303)
