Hi ladies and gents,
A pleasant reminder about the Wings Over Illawarra Air Show being held on Sunday 27th February at Albion Park in NSW.
It's the first year that the show is being formally recognised by CASA, and can now be referred to as a full blown "Air Show".
There's plenty happening on the day, so swing over to their website for all the details.

Might see a few of you down there!

I've been to the last couple of WOI airshows, and it gets better every year.
If form is anything to go by, it will probably blow up a storm in the afternoon as well.
See you all there.

Andrew just kidding with ya, I can't comment on woi as my first one was last year and the weather got worse in the arvo as i recall. But as for Avalon I've been to every airshow since it started in 1992 and can say that the only shows to suffer due to rain was 1995 and was the trade days by the weekend there were a few showers, and 2009 when it rained on Saturday.
So the shows inbetween there was good weather some of them it was boiling hot. And just to add my 2 cents on average it rains more in Sydney than it does in Geelong, as I have noticed when I moved from there to Sydney over a year ago much more rain here...

The good old South of the Border whine "but it rains more in Sydney". Yeah yeah, but check out the average amount of sunshine between Sydney & Melbourne. At least in Sydney you don't have to put the heating on in Febuary like I did this morning! Tomorrow I'll need the air-con on!;)

A question for anyone, do you think that because the USAF is up at willy they will send one of there planes down to Albion ?

Not now that Oprah has gone home. :)
Actually at the last Avalon Airshow, the B1 bomber took off with a beautiful eardrum shattering noise and disappeared for about half an hour or so, before returning to make some more lovely noise.
I wonder where it went in that time?

We've got enough of our own thanks.
Expected temperature is mainly fine, some cloud and 28C.
Perhaps you could send some weather down to Avalon so this year is not a repeat of the last airshows wet weather.

Latest forecast is, cloudy with a possible shower, winds N to NW changing to SW in the afternoon. Maximum 28C.
As last years storms, which missed the airfield and followed the escarpment showed, anything is possible.
The moisture in the air made for better photo's of the FA-18.:)
See you there.

I, personally, think there was more behind the reason of the short display by the F/A-18 Hornet than what the crowd were told yesterday. Why would the RAAF send a Hornet down from Williamtown with a pilot (who goes over to the USA & trains the USAF pilots to become fighter pilots), & this pilot couldn't do a demo of the aircraft (those where the words from the Airshow announcer)!!! For those who didnt attend yesterday, the hornet came in from the North, did 2 flypasts & on the 3rd flypast pulled it vertical & disappeared into the clouds & that was the end of the display. All over in about 2mins.
Bit disappointing & waste of time if you ask me, but I guess nothing can be done about it :(

Here's a some shot's of the day, a great show (even though the F/A-18 Hornet was a bit 'light')... Also, great to meet up with Graham and Danny as well!!
Highlights for me was the Connie, Catalina to name two, but I still had a great day!

Nice to meet up in person yesterday Bernie, your aerial shot has me standing at the end of the fence in the top left corner of the image (yellow High-Vis Jacket, where the taxiway turns to join the runway).
I enjoyed looking over the good variety of aircraft present, including GA, however most of the flying display was a couple of 500ft passes by each aircraft in turn. The fire bombing by the RFS added a bit of variety, but I though the best display was the two RAN Squirrels. I always enjoy the Connie, flame from the engines on takeoff, it did one approach with a go around, then vanished for a while to let all the GA traffic depart (nice landing when it finally returned). As for the Hornet, it definitely was Wings Over Illawarra, no real display and no landing and close up ground opportunity.
Overall, definitely worth the $20 entry fee, the aircraft ground displays were excellent, they just need to put a bit more thought into the flying program. I was monitoring the Display Master on 120.85 and even he didn't seem to know what each aircraft was going to do.

I did see the F-18 come back out of the clouds and go down behind the mountains to the south.
Although if you notice the Hornet had a big central tank on, that might impede the full display form happening (i.e. change the flight characteristics)

I recall from the Sept 2010 Willy show that it was the last display by the Hornet display pilot. Maybe a new pilot not yet established, but that would mean no classic solo display at Avalon which would be surprising.
It is disapointing to not get the full blown solo display, I recall driving to Nowra wanting to see it and just got the high level flypast. :(

I was up in Newcastle on Friday and a Hornet was practising for a display whilst I was there & this was a full blown demo that I saw! I was hoping it was for WOI but it must have been for Avalon.

Didn't the local residents last year kick up a stink about the F-18's performance over noise levels, I remember reading it in the paper that the local council got involved claiming that HARS should of decleared it a proper airshow and were going to fine them ?.....
