Last Sunday night I saw a couple of interesting vapour trails over western Sydney around 550pm.

The first one was heading in a north westerly direction, when it suddenly veered off to the west. I then noticed that there was a second vapour trail heading directly towards it from the exact opposite direction.

They were both very high up, but I had no way of knowing how close in altitude they were to each other. I wouldn't imagine either one was departing from or arriving in Sydney.

Was the northwest bound one being diverted away from the oncoming one, or was it simply altering direction as part of its route?

Patrick it was most likely QF93 overflying us enroute MEL-LAX as it often comes over SYD or Woolongong which was VH-OQE.
