G'day folks
I'll be heading down that way this weekend, and would like to know if anyone could suggest museums and the like that would be of interest. I also intend to spend next Monday spotting and photographing at YMML, if there's a list of good spots one could photograph from.
At the moment, the following are on the agenda:
-Point Cook Museum
-Spotting at YMML (And Essendon? Is there much to see there?)
-On the waiting list for Sunday's DC-3 flight to King Island... fingers crossed!
-A brief visit to the TAA Museum
-Australian National Aviation Museum, Moorabbin (While I'm there, stock up on some supplies at the pilot shop!)
-Airways Museum, Essendon
Apart from that, look forward to it. Thanks for any assistance provided! :)

Maikha, At Essendon there is a lot to see if you havent been before, maybe not too many bizjets as they in the hangers on the weekend but plenty of Kingairs,Sharp Airlines Metros, and 3 DC-3,s and then all the light stuff. As for the Airways Museum at Essendon i think its not open on weekends only Tuesdays,i hope this helps.

Hey Maikha, you pretty much have it down pat... Both the TAA Museum and the Aviation museum in Moorabbin are well worth it. Make sure you give the guys at the TAA a nice donation as the don't charge for entry.

Hi I have a Question,
On the 28th (this Tuesday) will there be any Singapore 747-400's coming in?
if so what time?
also does YMML get any international traffic that Sydney doesn't get?
are there any rare planes coming in on the 28th?
I am flying to Melbourne this Saturday and going back to syd on Tuesday.
I'm absolutely desperate to get a shot of an sq 7474
thanks

There should be an SQ B744 on the 28th. Looking at their schedule there is one. It will arrive at on SQ237 which arrives around 1000, then will depart as SQ228 at 1530-1600.
There are only 4 airlines (from memeory, there could be more, they are thr 3 noteable to me) which MEL get different to Sydney. They Air Asia X, Royal brunei, Strategic and Qatar.
Qatar is a night flight arrives at 2100-2200ish, departs at midnight
Royal Brunei are Wednesday and Saturday mornings. using B772's. Plus a couple of evening services as well. Which are similar timings to Qatar
Air Asia X are daily using A333's. They operate in daylight hours. Arriving at 0820 and departing around 0935
Strategic operate twice weekly to/from Phuket. They arrive Monday morning at 0750, Will depart at 1005 Tuesday morning. This is their A332 VH-SSA
Hope that helps...

My flights at 10:30am, is the observation deck still closed, I might just be able to get a quick shot.
How long would it take to walk from domestic t to international?
thanks

The observation deck is indeed still closed.
The two terminals are connected, and you can walk between the two on the departures level, or by a short deviation outside on the arrivals level. No more than 3 minutes walk depending on which end of the terminal you start from.

I concur with the above. Would suggest $10 or more.
They spent a lot of time and effort setting it up.
The TAA Museum is excellent...allocate 2 hours as there is a fair bit to see. It is located within the Qantas Simulator Centre and their opening hours are a bit restricted. Check their website
They also have a very good Ansett display, possible even better quality than the Ansett Museum at Hamilton.

I checked the weather for tuesday and their is a northerly wind,
they will be using rwy 34.
I there any place in the demestic terminal where you can see rwy 34 arrivals?
thanks
Joseph Saragozza.
24th June 2011, 03:31 PM
the only place from within the terminal is at the far end of the Virgin Australia gates (1-10) and im pretty sure you can see the arrivals of 34 on the REX side as well, gates 11-14. from there you will also be able to view the tiger and cargo apron. hope that helps

Thanks heeps, I guess you have to go through security to get to the VB side. Do you have to exit JQ terminal to get to VB terminal.
Does Thai airways operate t7's to YMML, I know YSSY's Thai services are all A340's now.
You lucky YMML'ers get all the classic traffic. :) :(
Thanks

Thai operate a mixture of B772's and B773's. Mostly the flights have been operated by B773's. You might get the odd B772 thrown in.
They arrive at 1200 and depart at 1600.

Hi all
Currently enjoying a beer in the company of backpackers in Prahan now. Spent today visiting the Airways Museum at Essendon (ALOT of interesting stuff in there, well worth the visit) and then went up to Puckapunyal to see some tanks. Been enjoyable thus far... though that 'Aircraft Crossing' at Essendon was something I've never encountered before!
Nonetheless, if all goes well, tomorrow will be a visit to the Aviation Museum at Moorabbin, Point Cook, and the TAA Museum (On Monday, which they've kindly arranged to be present for). However at this rate, not sure if I'll have time to do any spotting, but surely planes will always fly in/out of YMML in the future, so will be back :)

yeah brad, the int terminal is in between the DJ and QF/JQ terminals, so you would just have to walk 5mins from one end to the other.
its pretty easy to navigate you way around, but below is an interactive map of the terminal

G'day all
Last week concluded my 6 day getaway to Melbourne. My goal was to embark on a journey to learn about the history of Australian Aviation and to get a greater understanding and appreciation for it, and I certainly walked away with that! In summary, managed to visit the following:
-The Airways Museum, Essendon Airport
-Melbourne Centre and ATC (Arranged through a contact)
-RAAF Museum, Point Cook
-The Australian National Aviation Museum, Moorabbin
-TAA Museum, Airport West
-The Old Aeroplane Company, Tyabb
Additionally, also visited the Puckapunyal Tank Museum as well. Was booked to go on a DC-3 Flight to King Island on the Sunday, but this flight got canceled due to technical issues with the aircraft.
Am getting through my photo collection, and would like to share a few samples of it, the rest can be found on my Flickr account. Enjoy! :)

Hi all
The second installment of my sample of photos from my trip to Melbourne recently.
The Old Aeroplane Company, Tyabb
Still in complete utter disbelief such a place exists! All but one of the aircraft featured in this set of photos are airworthy, and can be seen in aerial display during the annual Tyabb Airshow in February.
Thanks to Rick and everyone here for letting a friend and I access the place and to take photos.

I'm surprised of the amount of history that's been preserved in Victoria, of all modes of transport from Aviation, to railways to even maritime! If I were to basically count, there's more aviation museums, tourist railways, vintage aircraft charter flights and heritage vessels in Victoria than my home state.
Looks like a few trips are needed to cover them all like I desire to eventually! :)
