Earlier this evening I heard the familiar drone of an A340-300 & checked to find it was a LAN flight to Santiago. I presumed it was late due to the ash situation. A few minutes ago I heard the drone of another A340-300 as it climbed out of Sydney. I was surprised to see that it was another LAN aircraft. But this one ( flight 9914) was going to Manila. Does anybody have the story on this unusual movement?

LAN9914 is repositioning to MNL for a heavy maintainence check. This is where LAN Chile send their aircraft. One of their A343's returned from MNL only just the other week!

The other one was heading off to SCl via PPT which will most likely become more frequent until the ash situation improves which could be sometime yet.

Hi Steve,
Living in Newtown, I can always tell when LAN or Aerolineas is taking off due to that A340 "drone"
I just love a tragic being a plane spotter :D

Cheers!

Thanks Jacob. I didn't notice that route change when I looked on the Sydney Airport site. And, yes Nadia, I have to say that, when it comes to picking out my favourite aircarft by sound, I am a bit of a tragic. I miss the sight and sound of the wonderful Air Tahiti Nui A343s climbing out....I miss being on one even more (such a great trip)!! I am very lucky as I live at the Stanmore end of Marrickville and have a great view either from my backyard, or through a row of high windows in my dining room, of departing aircraft as they bank left. The views of all aircraft on short finals are fairly pleasing too.
