View Full Version : QF 581/582 Using 747 Aircraft

Does Qantas make a profit using VH-OJD on the short flight from Sydney to Perth and back? I know this aircraft does change sometimes but it is usually VH-OJD 2 class cabin aircraft.

Do Qantas actually own these aircraft after 20 years of service?

Dave Dale
8th July 2011, 03:03 PM
I believe Qantas own nearly all the 747 fleet outright with the exception of the sale - lease back aircraft. The -ER variants may still be under finance, but they are owned outright aswell.

QF581/582 today was VH-OEJ. Good use of a 4 cabin ER if you ask me....

Pretty sure OJD is down here at Avalon at the moment...

Yep it went down yesterday. Only came out of a D check on June 3

Brad Myer

VH-OJD is the only B744 that does not have a PE cabin installed, hence the use of OJD mainly on domestic routes.

Is it known how long Qantas plan to use the 747 on this route?
I am considering to book a flight on qf581/582 - but knowing my luck there will be a change of equipment the day I book to fly.
It would be a wasted trip as I have no other reason to visit Perth!:p

Would anyone know how long OJD is at Avalon for? Flying this Monday back from Perth and hopefully still a 747. Thanks

Anthony F

I think OJD left Avalon yesterday morning for Sydney as QF6196. It flew QF581/582 yesterday

QFA582 seen @ 2011-07-27 12:47 CET on route from PER to SYD
QFA581 seen @ 2011-07-27 07:29 CET on route from SYD to PER

VH-OJO is on the run today. First time to Perth since she appeared in the "new" Wallabies scheme

I know Qantas offers Premium Economy and First exculsively on International Flights.
But who are sitting on PE and F seats if any one of them are operating on QF581 and QF582? Or just leave them empty?

Kelvin R
14th August 2011, 08:33 AM
First is available to business passengers while premium economy is available to economy passengers. Typically these seats are reserved for gold or higher frequent flyers to pre-allocate or first in best seated at the airport.

VH-QPE A330 was used on today's QF582 (and assuming QF581).
Temporary shortage of 747s or did the scheduled aircraft go tech this morning?

Jason H
22nd August 2011, 08:34 PM
As was yesterday, and last Thursday was VH-QPA. I'm guessing it is because VH-OJD is operating QF5/6 at the moment most likely as a replacement to VH-OJI which has been out of action the last week.

I have an award booking in J coming up Sept 9th QF581. Got stuck with 18A & B but these were the only upper deck seats left. I actually extended my flight home to Perth from Melbourne to be able to fly 744 business QF581 SYD-PER. Taking JQ36 MEL-SYD departs and arrives international terminals which should be fun in itself!

Does anyone know when the 744's will be back on QF581 as I have noticed the equipment all week has been A330's. I have all my fingers and toes crossed they will be back in action prior to the 9th September or Im going to be feel pretty stupid going to SYD to get back to PER. :)

Yesterday, QF581 was operated by 4-class 744 (VH-OJG), today 581 is scheduled to be a 333.

VH-OJD is usually the frame that operates QF581, and over the last few days she has been operating QF5/QF6.

Taking JQ36 MEL-SYD departs and arrives international terminals which should be fun in itself!

If flying between Melbourne and Sydney I too would consider an international flight for its domestic leg, however have you given yourself enough time between flights in SYD working on the theory that Jetstar international flights are very often delayed?
Others feedback on the subject would be appreciated too.

cheers

however have you given yourself enough time between flights in SYD

Adam no problems there I have a couple of days in Sydney between flights. Have seen stats on JQ36 in particular and agree it's often delayed which is fine with me as I get more time to test out my new DSLR. Just dont tell my wife JQ504 leaves just 10 minutes after and that we would not have had to check in so early being a true domestic flight.

On another note. If the scheduled 744 on OF581 is replaced with a smaller aircraft i.e less J seats. I assume that as I have an award booking in business we may have a chance of being pushed back into economy depending on how many superior status pax there? im only a lowly bronze.

Resulting in no 747 equipment on the SYD-PER route?

Thankyou for the confirmation.
That would then leave QF8 as Qantas' only domestic 744 flight in Australia.

Forgive me if I've missed something, but with recent announcements from QF,does anyone know when the 744s are going to re-commence on the SYD- PER route, and will it be back on the 581/582 service,or something else?
I know A333 QPB operated today,so i am assuming it has not just continued on,but I may be wrong.
I'd be grateful for any info

Hi Jim. From the way I read their announcement (could be wrong of course!) the domestic network changes are effective 4 June. I, for one, certainly hope they do it twice daily... not because I ever fly SYD-PER but because it's ridiculous to have a dedicated domestic 747 that only does 2 sectors a day.

Jim M
8th May 2012, 10:25 AM
Cheers Rowan, couldn't agree with you more.If they start twice daily, they may need more than one 747 :D
Will be interesting to see whether they have a second dedicated aircraft (like OJD) or just rotate different aircraft through these sectors

I've made dummy bookings on the QF website for return flights between Sydney and Perth, from the middle of May through to the middle of November 2012 and there has been no reference of 747 aircraft being used on this route.

Perhaps its just a case of the website having not yet been updated with the equipment changes?

At this risk of being annoying, can I ask if there are any rumoured dates that the 747 will resume on the domestic flights?

I raise the question again only because I need to travel on 'X' amount of flights before the end of June in order to upgrade to the next status level of my QF FF membership and I would like to book those flights as soon as possible.

Hi Jim - I was under the impression the second B744 service wasn't happening.. or at least not until November. Stand to be corrected though.

I heard that QF were only going to put a 2nd 744 on the route when the next (originally) scheduled A380 arrived. Now that Qantas have delayed any further A380 deliveries, I would be surprised if QF have any spare 744 on rotation available that would otherwise be spending 12+ hours parked at Sydney doing nothing between flights.

Hi Jim - I was under the impression the second B744 service wasn't happening.. or at least not until November. Stand to be corrected though.

Has anyone heard anymore about a second SYD-PER-SYD rotation for the 744 as earlier discussed?

I've heard no more about it so I'm assuming it has been shelved.

Hi folks,

I believe that from Monday 19 November, the QF581/582 rotation switches to B767 operation.

Jim M
21st October 2012, 10:14 AM
Not really sure what is going on with the 581/582 service.
It appears on the QF flight schedules as a 763 from Nov 19 as already said, but a friend of mine has booked on it for 24 Dec and it is showing an A333 and i found a few more days around Christmas where it is an A332.

However,i then tried an experiment and searched quite a few various days through Jan/Feb and it appeared to switch back to a 744,so i'm not sure whats happening here.

Maybe OJD is going on Christmas holidays :D

Seriously though, if anyone does know what is happening, please post.

Cheers

Not that I know, but I recall the 747's were pulled off previously because of fuel costs and demand (or lack of) and then put back on (this time round) in response to Virgin's A330's and business class offering. I recall Alan Joyce spruiking the international lie flat seats on the 747's in response to Virgin's A330's doing transcon. Perhaps fuel and demand may be the reason once again? Pure speculation however.

Looks like Sun 18th Nov is the last 581/582 run by OJD for the moment. (As suggested already) It is swapped to the 767 fleet from Mon onwards.

OJD will be relegated to the 21/22 run and various others.:D

It's a bit strange... it shows in Innovata for early JAN, again late JAN to late MAR, and then from APR to OCT. But QF website shows 332 operating for most of the APR-OCT 2013 block (didn't look pre-April).
